Well. It is Gamefaqs. I don't really want to take anything they say into consideration with their poorly executed tournament brackets.

All time? the people who voted have played every game known to man? Props. In all seriousness though, these are always hype of the time, just like any BLANK of the BLANK.

Also we see the whole voting wrong.
The results shows how many think Undertale is the best game ever.
NOT Undertale is the best game ever.
It just happened many others which NEVER played Undertale just think cause of the charismatic characters think is the best game.
But being a voter of Undertale, I hope the biggest percent of voters, voted it cause they play it.

I watched the Jim Stirling squirty play for a bit and it doesn't really look like the type of game I would play, it's probably fine but I don't really want to try it, the combat? looked a bit weird and it's retro graphical style doesn't really interest me.
If it's been voted the best game ever, that seems a bold statement because over my vast gaming career (from C64 onwards) I have played some truly amazing games which I would consider could fit that category better.

I'm so tired of hearing about this game. -long drawn out sigh- Please pleeeeeaaaase just go away! Go back to reading Homestuck or something. Just stop talking about how Undertale is the pinnacle of Western Civilization.
Why? Is Homestuck bad?
I had plans to read it.
And yes, I know it is about Alien Trolls or something, but it must be a reason why even Namco had them in a game.
It's another series that Tumblr has gotten their hands on and declared theirs and no one elses. Just like what they did with Undertale and Steven Universe.

I think it's important to note that Undertale didn't win Best Game Ever.

It won Best. Game. Evar.

I feel a lot of people are missing that bit on context. :D

Well if the poll did one thing, it finally got me playing and I'm absolutely loving it. Maybe I'm just blind but I very rarely hear people mention its soundtrack, its right up there with To The Moon and NiER as one of the most enchanting scores ever. I wouldn't consider it game of the forever haha but its definitely something worth being loved by many people.

Also
Who knew getting friendzoned by a skeleton could sting so much T_T

As long I won't talk about them in Forums, I am alright then.
I guess you forgot to mention FNAF. When a person wanted to create a crossover with FNAF and Undertale, get a lot of sh*t sadly...
So awesome idea btw.

As a side note, it's kind of interesting how in this thread people discussing the competition are actually calling it something different and thus distorting the meaning. The competition is not about the "greatest game of all time". That implies a level of seriousness that the original title "Best. Game. Ever." does not.

It is, once again, something for fun. Moreover, the very description of the contest dispells any notion that this is in supposed to be "like all real, guyz! For realzies"

The actual description of the actual contest said:
don't forget: This is not a contest to see which game is your favorite, or even which one is the best rated. It's all a big popularity contest, and visitors who have never visited GameFAQs before will be sure to stop in and vote.
http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/bge20

So, should have Undertale won? Is it, like, the bestest game? Umm, yeah, that poll is entirely the wrong thing to look at for answers.
Even if it was real, would it matter? It's an opinion poll on the internet. When have those EVER mattered? When have they EVER been accurate representations of anything?
The answer to all of these is "No". What's annoying in this case, however, is that GameFAQs themselves never claimed it did matter, the contests have been historically meant to be ultimately insignificant. And this has not even been a secret.

Yet, now this one apparently matters. Now, this one has retroactively been made to count as something significant. Now this one is somehow an accurate representation of...something.

Now this one is apparently divorsed from any context and instead it exist as some sort of fever dream conjured up from the minds of people who "don't know shit about ass"[footnote]to borrow a phrase that another poster eloquently used[/footnote]. And those fever dreams get heavily painted with whatever view[footnote]that is in fact completely irrelevant to even the imagined contest, much less the actual one[/footnote] that person decides to inject into it.

It's a mockery of the entire tradition. It's random people taking something that doesn't or shouldn't concern them, bastardizing the concept to its antithesis, then go on to paint it even blacker.
A very good idea that would made the whole contest more meaningful is the winner would be drawn by a well-known artist or something similar.
Now...the whole thing is just a thing to have fun for a small moment. I enjoy it, but now we musr move on.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. The contest is to have fun for a while. And we are supposed to do that. Then, indeed, move on.

And yet, here we are, with people who complain about it being, of all the things, too serious.

Anytime politics play into a popularity contest, the result is basically irrelevant.

Kinda like when popularity plays into a politics contest.

What is it with people's need to always have to rank things? Especially when it comes to something as broad as games where we can hardly even nail down what the definition of a game is, how are we all supposed to decide which one is best? Surely games appeal to different people on different levels, you don't play an RTS for the same reason you play a walking simulator or a shooter, so can you even put them in the same list? And I suppose people play the same game for different reasons too. It's kind of like when someone asks me what my favorite song or band is. All I can answer is 'well... depends on my mood I guess'.

Something more prevalent in video games is the age. Do you distract points because a title is old or hasn't aged well? Or does it get bonus point for being a classic or setting trends? Do we praise Modern Warfare or condemn it for starting the trend of modern military shooters?
If someone were to push me and insist on naming a best game of all time I'd probably come up with something I haven't played in ages, while all I play now is stuff I rag on all the time. So why even bother with the list? I'd rather see a list of 'these ones in no particular order are really cool'.

Really? Then I assume it dose get better from dragging out stuff like the annoying overprotective goat mom.

Regardless people seem to get hung up on the "greatest game of all time" label. You can't have the objective "greatest" game. It's just a popularity contest with the the winner being the "greatest" in minds of majority of the people who voted.

Yeah, it's almost as if the contest cannot be taken seriously as a concept by its very nature. Almost as if it wasn't even meant to. Almost as if the flaw there should be really obvious. Yet, there it is, almost as if it wasn't expect anybody taking it seriously.

And you sound almost as if you did.

I was talking about ranking things in general, not this one in particular. Or are you saying that all ranking contests are not meant to be taken seriously?
