It is pretty great, but it has an online fanbase which means it attracts trolls and people that come to hate it like moths to a flame. I will admit the fanbase can be a little cringey, but overall it is a solid game that the RPG genre needed. It reminds us that an RPG shouldn't just be a perpetual XP bar filling simulator, that the story should be up front and the characters great. It calls back to the classic PC games of old, with funny and unique characters, a great story, and actual choice. I just hope people take a look at why it works, and apply it to current lackluster RPG series. Imagine Fallout with quirky and fun characters again. You know, when it was actually funny?

There's zero objective way to judge games. There are so many elements of games, and the technical aspects change drastically over time. We're also in a period of time when we have no confidence about how to judge games. Is narrative important? How important is graphical quality? How important is a game's emotional impact on the player? The intellectual impact?

What does a game DO? How should we evaluate how a game impacts other developers relative to players?

Art in general has a "problem" of being difficult to evaluate, but video games in particular have for far too long been seen as a "toy", as a "time waster", as something not serious, not worth evaluating at all beyond how "fun" they are.

It was indeed bombed. I was listening to some Undertale tracks via YouTube earlier and found that someone was chewing out another user for rallying outsiders to do just that, naming him the perpetrator. Said perpetrator defended himself by saying that what one is supposed to do with voting and polls.
The actual description of the actual contest said:
So, how well do you know your fellow GameFAQs users? Will people vote for their favorite, or what they think is actually the better game? Do those classic games still hold up today, or will more modern games take the stage? Will outside forces rally around an upstart, or will they not care enough to bother?
(emphasis mine)

It's not like GameFAQs didn't expect that.

Oh that was for all time? I thought that it was just for this year...though the older games should have tipped me off. Anyway, I didn't really vote for either. I love everything about Undertale except for the game part of the game. I like the characters, the writing, and the soundtrack is freaking awesome but I hate actually playing the game. Ocarina of Time is a game that I'd rather play but I don't see how it beat out other LoZ games. I had more fun with Link To the Past and Between Worlds but I don't really like the 3D games in that series too much anyway.

I can't wait for next years Best Game Ever thing.

*Looks around*

So has saying what the best game of all time is always been something that people couldn't just sit down and have a fun time with?
Considering the fact that even discussing the "best game of all time" is pretty much a meaningless popularity contest where every fanbase is pitted against one another, what exactly do you expect? If there was any reasonable discussion everyone would have just agreed that rating any one game the "best of all time" is a pointless endeavor, before disbanding and finding something more worthwhile to do. Fan rage, harassment, petty insults and rigging are pretty much an integral part of this meaningless discussion.

OT: I have to agree with others. The game is barely even 3 months old yet and it's already being held up as the crowning achievement of the medium; perhaps waiting to see if anyone is even talking about it years from now might be a good idea. Not that its age really ruins the contest, since it's such a pointless contest to begin with. Imagine trying to find the best song of all time, or the best flavor of ice-cream of all time.

And this is why you don't put recently released games on a Best of All Time poll. Undertale is fine, but the thing is any place in "greatest of all time" is going to have to be discussed years after release to determine whether or not a game was truly great and inspirational (like Zelda: OoT, FFVII, Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, etc) or just a flavor-of-the-month, flash-in-the-pan title. Perspective and context is important, like how OoT essentially codified mechanics we take for granted like the lock-on and being able to manipulate the camera while FFVII is a game whose success that people (including Square themselves) have desperately been trying to replicate for nearly twenty years, mostly by imitating it (often badly).
Exactly.

IMO it only won because it's the newest entry to compete, and its appeal is fresh in everyone's minds. Not to discredit it as a quality game - it certainly is - but best of all time? The most revolutionary thing about it is that you don't HAVE to fight your enemies in fights. Story and concept-wise it's quite unique, but hardly blazes a new bold trail of its own. Even the whole morality of the story has been done before in games like This War of Mine, where the violent path is the path of least resistance, and makes you question your ethics as a player.

Awesome game, but a bit overhyped for it's unfamiliar, but not entirely unique traits. It'll pass, just like Five Nights at Freddy's a year ago.

*shrug* Certainly more interesting than Zelda winning again.
Especially the wrong Zelda.
Yes. A Link to the Past would be the correct one... followed by Majora's Mask :)

Also, to be best of all time you would need to be past five or ten years. Then if people still love it (even through rose-tinted diapers) you could make an argument for it.

Also, you should have won a lot of Game of the Year awards first before going for best all-time.
Looking at it from where we are now, I'd have to say that OoT isn't even in the top 5 best LoZ games anymore. Heck, maybe even top 7 dependin on how you want to count those double games like Oracle of Seasons, or the remakes of older games.

Twilight Princess was a much better version of OoT anyway, with clearer characters that actually had character and far more impressive visuals (not specifically graphics, but aesthetic too). Windwaker had exceptional characters and and amazing overworld that puts every other LoZ game to shame. Majoras Mask had the absolute best world building of any LoZ game, period, with the best story of any LoZ game.

Anyway though, its a for funsies poll that way too many people took way too seriously.

Yall can crap on Undertale fans all you want about how they're rude, bad, blah blah whatever. Doesn't matter because every other fandom is just as bad. Go to the FFVII boards and say that you think the game wasn't nearly as good as *insert any other FF game here*. You will get flamed terribly hard. They'll wish death in excruciating ways upon you, you'll probably get lots of gross usages of the word rape. Same with the OoT fans.

Are we really goin to judge the entirety of a fandom on the vocal douchebags that are a part of it? Seriously ask yourselves if you want to go down this route because I will gladly go down that route and denounce any number of things that people care about because douchebags are gonna douche in that fandom.

It's a good game.
Maybe even great.

Greatest ever?
Well, perhaps for some people but definitely not for me.
Just doesn't have the scope for something I'd call great personally.

These greatest game things always strike me as somewhat weird anyway.
Comparing games outside of genres crumbles into a discussion (okay, argument) over what types of game people like rather than comparing the qualities of the game.

Discussing whether undertale was the greatest rpg of all time has merit as at least you're comparing it to things in a shared genre.
Which it isn't.
Because that's the baldurs gate series.
If you put on your nostalgia goggles and look at it juuuust right, you'll see what I'm on about.

Or go to any of the other Final Fantasy boards (FF III - FF VI) and watch as the exact same thing happens (especially on the FF VI ones, since fans of that game seem to think that SEs' decision not to re-release/remake the BEST GAME EVER equates to killing their family members/significant others/pets/friends/etc.)!

Gamefaqs is awful and the fact that people take stock in what is essentially a popularity contest as an actual objective metric for great video games is absurd. Even if I hadn't played Undertale I would've still added fuel to the fire by voting for it anyway because anyone that actually takes this poll seriously and is genuinely upset that a game they don't like is winning deserves all the dumb nerd rage they can muster.

As for the actual results of the poll, it really makes no difference to me since the fact that FF7 and Ocarina have been winning it for years shows how blindly the user base is stuck in nostalgia, even though a lot of those game have not aged well.

*grabs head* AUGH!

As a massive fan of the game, shit like that makes me angry, because it completely undermines the entire point!

There is no wrong way to play the game, as the game adapts to how you play. It's a game ABOUT choice. Specifically the choice of "If you believe in non-violence, how long can you hold yourself to that, when everything if trying to kill you?". It's about the journey, not the destination. So whining that "waaaah, youtuber not playing game right" is just about the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

And...Not liking it the right way? What?! There's something in the game for almost anyone! How can anyone claim someone is liking it "the wrong way"?!

Ugh...Fandoms are awful...Why can't people just enjoy a game and not judge others for thinking differently?

It's so recent so that's why it won. I garuntee if IMDB makes a "Best Film Ever" in a month and adds Star Wars 7 on there it'll win. Only because it's fresh in peoples minds.

Also, fuck Tumblr for ruining shit like this. I wanted to try this but after Tumblr ruined Steven universe for me I can't touch anything they get their slimy claws into.

To give an example of not liking it the right way - when I wrote that I had in mind this one reviewer who said he didn't like the characters (And mostly found them annoying) but loved the game for it's commentary on RPGs. Cue waves of hate from those who can't understand someone might like different things from them.

Yeah, fandoms are largely shit.

Considering that Yatzee himself praised the game http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/columns/extra-punctuation/14860-Undertale-for-Best-Written-Game-2015#&gid=gallery_4930&pid=1 I don't find this suprising.

It's a great game, but I wouldn't even call it the best game of the year, let alone all time. IMO, The Witcher 3, Ori and the Blind Forest, and Bloodborne were all better (Witcher 3 being my GOTY). Hell, there were probably other better games that I didn't get to.

Besides, what do you think is going to happen when you include a recently released game with a particularly outspoken fanbase in a greatest of all time poll?

The whole buildup was all kinds of hilarious, from "tumblr game" to "we can't let this joke entry win" and now a lot of people have conceded it being rigged.

Now the follow up poll of the day was something like "will you get Undertale now" and some people screamed "ad campaign" I mean really, who gives a shit.

It's funny how much I hate "Best Game Ever" debates, yet Ocarina is constantly put at, or near the top, and it's my favorite game of all time.

Anyway, Undertale probably won't be keeping its relevance the way the usual "Best Game of all Time" candidates do. Sure so it makes people feel stuff. That's great, but usually the most well regarded games of all time need to have innovative mechanics, great gameplay, and yes, usually a good story and characters. A skeleton making puns isn't going to light the gaming world on fire like the stuff you find in Ocarina of Time, Super Mario Bros. 3, etc.

Of course, most Best Game Ever contests are void as long as they keep putting Pokemon Red and Blue over any of the other ones, even though it's downright terrible compared to any of the main series games that followed it. But now I'm just ranting.

So yeah, I don't care if Undertale won, good for it. But I highly doubt it's going to be regarded as some true classic in more than 10 years.

Considering one of the options (hitting 25%, last I checked) is "I will now refuse to buy/play the game out of pure spite", that's a pretty shitty ad campaign. XD

Wow, so how serious was this poll? Was it the end all poll to end all polls? Did they call in the military to ensure that every vote was counted and legitamate? Is there an ongoing FBI investigation about ballot stuffing? Did congress pass a law that this poll was to decide once and for all, legally, to be engraved into 10 ft high slabs of lead to be preserved for all time what the best game of all time was?

Wait what? It was just a run of the mill internet poll where you don't even have to so much as log in to vote on?

I would say I'm sorry for being so sarcastic but I've seen this going around lately and I think it would be more interesting to discuss WatchMojo.com clickbait lists because they are probably more credible. Wait no scratch that my grandmother who to my knowledge has only played Wii sports boxing once in her life as a joke the day we got a Wii would probably be a more credible source.
