Despite some stumbles, Deponia is a winner.

Ah, finally a review of Deponia on The Escapist.

Deponia is, hands down, my favorite game this year, if only because I haven't played many games this year, but still, I really liked it.

Also the sequel hits Germany september 14th if I remenber correctly, I think this is going to be a trilogy. If so, then I will definitely buy all of them.

I'm interested in what specifically the reviewer found to be 'tough brainteasers'. The game was pretty easy, I got through it in three evenings without a walkthrough.

I'm glad someone reviewed this. I've been looking at it in steam for a bit now, and couldn't decide whether it was worth the money or not. I guess I will go ahead and get it. Havn't played a good point and click since...Legends of Kyrandia? Or one of the King's Quests...but Kyrandia was definitely the best.

I could use some information about the voice acting.
When I saw this on Steam I was so close to just buying it, from the premise and pictures alone, but when I saw the trailer and heard the main character, it instantly turned me off.
Is the main actor at least bearable to listen to throughout the game?

How're the rest of the people in it?
Well, it's a comedy game. So you should expect at least SOME of the characters to have annoying voices. I thought the main character was quite good, not quite on the level of Monkey Island's Dominic Armato, but I warmed to him as the game went on.

Is your avatar from Kings Quest?
If so, it's no wonder you found it easy. The old-school adventure games were insanely difficult to figure out, at least for kids.
In most adventure games, the puzzles seem non-sensical most of the time anyway, combining what seems like random items to progress. I like a challenge, but it was kind of a hassle when things made no sense.
Yes, it's from King's Quest though I'm not a huge fan of the series. It's more that a walk icon just seemed symbolic of my favorite gaming genre. And yes, this game is WAY easier than any King's Quest game. All the puzzles were logical, the game throws subtle hints at you, and it helps being able to bring up all the interactive items on the screen.

I'm probably going to get a warning or probation for this, considering I'm technically discussing porn, but I have to get this off my chest:

Is it just me, or does the artwork on this game look almost identical to the artwork on the web comic "Oglaf"? I have yet to look up the credits on Deponia, but I wonder if it's the same chick.

I played it , the dialoge is too obvious to be funny . In the tutorial they repeated the word " tutorial " around 10 times . In a genre of games that writing is everything , this one isnt as clever as Monkey island or even Hector : Badge of whatever.

Don't suppose anyone has a link to the song Andy mentions at the start of the review? Browsing through the soundtrack on YT now, German words!

Very glad to see some love for classic puzzle-advdenture games... But why not video reviews?
ALso happened with the Book of Unwritten Tales rev...

Is there a strange Escapist-conpiracy between not eating Mayonnaise condimented sandwiches and getting video for your review...? I see Mike gets it every time...

Definately looks like a game I want to check out! The graphic style looks great, and the design looks easy on the eye and fun to play... so bring it on! :p

Seeing the lyrics wouldn't really do it for you, in fact it'd probably just look weird and nonsensical. Like the game itself, the theme song (and the similar between-chapter songs) are all about presentation, and the singer absolutely kills it.

Here, found this for you. The others are kinda spoilers so I'd avoid them until you actually play it.

I'm more on the fence about this game after reading the review than I was before. I think I'll wait and see if the trilogy or whatever reaches completion first. There's nothing more frustrating than half-finished stories.

Oh, the ending is perfectly satisfactory. Deponia works fine as a standalone game. The developers just left themselves some very obvious opportunities for future games.

While these threads may be explained in a sequel - and yes, the conclusion leaves that door wide open - the lack of a resolution after so much obvious build-up is a little disappointing.
Translation: don't buy it.

I played this the other day, and i have some mixed feelings about it. The art was great and the puzzles were fun, but the plot was underwhelming. The main plot never seemed like the main plot, if you know what I mean. Every time we were given a objective, it feels like this will lead us to our final goal, and each time it is a let down. You are told to "do this" and when you do you are told "great, now do that." And when I got to the end of the game I got a sense of "what just happened?"
I was also disappointed in the female 'love interest.' When you fist see her she seems sort of interesting, and when she wakes up from a coma she also does something interesting. Then she is unconscious for almost the rest of the game and when she finally does wake up she looks like she is in a trance the entire time. Never before have I seen a character who was more interesting whilst they were unconscious.
All in all, I would favorably compare it to monkey island. They both have enjoyable humor and puzzles, but Deponia is somewhat lacking in plot and engaging love interest. If there is a sequel, I will buy it, if only because I was disappointed in Deponia's ending and would like some proper closure.

Reading the description in the review, this sounds like something that may have been inspired by the manga series Battle Angel Alita, one of my most favorite series. There are a lot of elements that feel similar, a junkyard world, a paradise floating high in the sky, a pivotal character who is a cyborg (i.e. Alita, herself). Of course, I could just be reading too much into the coincidence.

I think I'll wait until they've got the bugs patched out, at least. And it's subtitled, not dubbed? I dunno; it seems like in 2012 there's not much excuse for not releasing a proper dub of a video game. Most companies have been doing it ever since video games have supported spoken dialog.
