A vault where everyone has a microphone attached to them (like the collar that Monkey has which will blow up if he tries to take it off) which projects everything they say over the vaults PA.

There could be no secrets... no private conversations

1 - The Forbidden Experiment on every newborn child.
2 - A vault full of paranoid schizophrenics with security cameras monitoring their every move
3 - Two separate vaults, one full of women and one gay man, the other full of men and one gay woman. See what happens.

A vault where only babies are put in however no one ever speaks to the babies, but soft calming music is played throughout childhood (still with no language), people go in to raise the children still saying nothing to them and see if the children.

The reason for this? To see if the children come up with a language of their own and what it would sound like

Another vault where everyone had a group of supplies needed to survive which is topped up every month, if you fight or kill someone to gain supplies you are killed, if you share you are killed, the only way is to steal supplies from each other.

Reasoning: I will train the perfect stealth operatives!

The vault dwellers are told that if they dont believe in and follow the rough approximation of a two thousand year old story then they will go to a special place underneath the vault that is too horrible to imagine. But if they do everything they are told, they will be assured of happiness, love and peace.

OH WAIT A SECOND!

I lol'd.

There are a surprising amount of interesting/good suggestions in here, but yours take the cake, but its a cake you don't like and its main ingredients is something you are allergic to, you have an endless supply of this cake, its the only supply of food and no one else can get access to it, you will be sealed in the vault with 50 other people for 30 years.

Vault idea 1. The vault will only be inhabited by people that are legally retarded and/or have severe mental health issues, the vault will have fresh ingredients but no instructions on how to prepare them, all the means necessary for a proper education as well as instruments and a computer for each inhabitant.

The experiment main purpose is to see if people that cant function in our society will create their own or if they can't function in any scenario.

It's probably not canon, but it could probably be fixed by leaving blueprints for something like a vertibird and clear instructions that it will need to be build in 100 years or they will be killed.

This seems like a fairly interesting experiment to run:

Vault 34
Maximum Sustainable Capacity:
500

Initial Population:
100

Gender/Orientation Distribution:
(M=Male, F=Female/s=straight, g=gay, b=bisexual)
M/s: 20%
M/g: 20%
M/b: 10%
F/s: 20%
F/g: 20%
F/b: 10%

Facilities
Food (synthesized)
Purified Water
Entertainment (subtle emphasis on sci-fi/fantasy (Heinlein, Tolkien) and rationalist (Feynman) literature)
Fitness Equipment
Medical Care
Internet Access

Goal:
To explore the extent to which social interaction, societal norms and genetics affect the eventual sexual orientation of maturing human beings.

Also, to explore the extent to which socially imposed sexual moralities persist in the face of a limited gene pool and increased exposure to alternative sexual natures.

Vault 36: The overseer of the vault has the title of King, he is a benevolent ruler and is aged about 30 so he will survive the 20 Years underground. Although he works for the good of the vault and its 1000 inhabitants there is underlying indoctrination that Kings are the worst kind of evil and the Vault must rise up in revolution and kill him.

The indoctrination stops two days from the planned revolution and reverses. The inhabitants realise that their leader has been working to keep them safe and prosperous. Once the 20 years have passed the inhabitants use their GECK to set up a defensible paradise, they have fortifications, powerful weapons and the means to become a research and trading outpost. Further study will then occur to observe how this benevolent dictatorship competes with a democracy vault in the vicinity which is:

Vault 37: The overseer of the vault has the title of President and is an oppressive ruler, he and his government rule with an iron fist but indoctrination that Kings are bad and Presidents are the only form of government keeps the 3000 inhabitants supporting their leaders. The inhabitants have access to melee weapons such as clubs and no fortifications when they emerge after 22 years. They have no GECK, only directions to Vault 36. Further study will show if they try to invade the inhabitants of Vault 36 even though they would be crushed if they tried to do so.

End result: Vault 37 invades the new lands that Vault 36 have made fertile and livable but are destroyed, Vault 36 becomes a prosperous nation that allows other settlements to join it upon which it becomes like the NCR but recognises its limits, when the first King dies his sucessor sets up a government beneath him and the government resembles that of a Constitutional Monarchy. Becoming a raider free and prosperous settlement with large lands makes it a target for invasion but it can repel these forces. The NCR also attempts to invade due to presence of a Brotherhood of Steel chapter that was fleeing them and has snuck in. The player is an inhabitant of the Kingdom of Vault 36 and is tasked with tracking and making contact with this chapter of the Brotherhood, they want to get some land to live in away from the NCR and the player must decide who to support, the NCR, Vault 36 or help raiders take over and make the place a haven for chaos, anarchy and crime.

A vault where the entire vault will blow up if the Overseer dies (and the overseer cannot be changed) Good luck keeping him alive for 200 years!
A vault which is an underground mining camp with 20 hour shifts for people ages 5 and up and anyone who collapses on the job is shot.
A vault which is in complete darkness all the time
A vault which is in blinding light all the time
A vault where everyone is mentally retarded
A vault where everyones legs are crippled
A vault where everyones arms are crippled
A vault which is infested with a deadly swarm of bees
A vault with "The Brown Note" (or just something that makes you shit yourself when heard for an extended period of time) being constantly played 24/7. There is only 1 toilet, and it breaks down 99% of the time.

Just a few Vault experiments there

I'll go potentially horrific with this one.

Vault 500 would have single sphere shaped room which is completely open including all facilities, no matter how private. Twelve randomly selected people are kept in this room. Through the facilities in this room, people cannot die through aging or disease, even by choice.

There is no entertainment in this room except audio recordings activated by button press all along the wall. There is no control given over these recordings aside from being able to turn them on, and they can be any length. They are heard by everyone in the room, a little too loudly to be blocked out with hands on ears.

The walls are completely soft and nothing can be broken no matter how hard those inside try.

The only way out for all inside is to break a screen saying "BREAK ME" in the ceiling that is far beyond the reach of anything in the room, and with no way of breaking apart an object to obtain reach, it is impossible to reach this thing.

Except through the use of the other people.

If one person were to string everyone else together, having killed them all, they could reach the screen and possibly break it.

Of course, if everyone stood on each other's shoulders at the bottom, that would work too. But will they figure that out before someone has taken a step down the more savage route?

The person or people who succeed(s) will allegedly escape to a larger compound where, the Vault computers say, there are all the facilities that the Sphere Room has, plus privacy and other people who are not effected by the Sphere Room, ready to reward them with all the other kinds of entertainment otherwise forbidden.

Whether or not that story is true, I'll leave to your imagination.

On the other hand, maybe the fun will have only just started...

Personally, I'd set up a normal, well-equipped vault with an overriding pseudo-religious ideology to convince its residents that it is their solemn duty to rebuild the Earth as a utopia using all the resources available to them. This provides an interesting new angle on the potential positive effects of religion.

A vault that seems to be safe and normal on the first day that all inhabitants go in but over the course of the first night changes into a series of blocked off rooms with traps and becomes maze-like similar to Saw or the Cube. One inhabitant is randomly chosen to be put in control of the vault's traps and is told they will be killed if they do not place the vault inhabitants into the dangerous situations that have been set out throughout the vault. If s/he does not comply, they are killed and someone else is chosen and given the same proposition. Then the vault inhabitants have to attempt to survive the traps through completion of tasks or sacrifice of other victims in the trap. This goes on for half a year before the vault changes back to first day specs and inhabitants are forced to co-habitate. Then at the beginning of the next year the whole process starts again with a new controller selected. The Vault overseer is never selected for the job as controller and is always a victim.
This experiment would go on for a 100 years before the vault becomes unsealable.
The aim of this experiment is to find out:
-Whether the majority of inhabitants that are chosen as controllers would kill their fellow vault dwellers in exchange for their lives.
-Whether a majority of the victims would sacrifice other dwellers in an attempt to survive or opt for solving the puzzles instead even if they may lead to harm.
-Whether the inhabitants will successfully co-habitate after the experience each time and whether they will accept back the controller into their society or punish them gruesomely.
-Whether the controllers are changed psychologically by the experiment.
-Whether the inhabitants become prepared for each year and remember.

In case of:
-Full vault extermination, the vault shall be opened early.
-Collapse of civilisation, the vault will be purged.
-Early access to the vault, the vault entrance will be purged of life.
-Civilised advancement in life, the vault will be opened early.

Edit: Off-Topic: March Mayhem score is 101 at time of posting. Coincidence or what?

Uhh... I think they'd figure out to climb on top of one another before they decided to slaughter one another.

Vault 86: filled with socially inept but highly intelligent People. A Vault full of Sheldons.

Will they reform their thought processes to allow for more social interaction? Will the intelligent elite revert to the law of the strongest?

I think they will eventually pummel each other. Its more probable then the Citizens of Vault 85, all with an I.Q. of under 85 harming each other.

Vault 84: Every Vault has security cams; this one has them positioned in such a way they are impossible to ignore. Every citizens is constantly aware of the presence of the cameras.

Vault 96:

101 people

There are 50 men and 50 women. They have each been indoctrinated into thinking that they are of the opposite gender.

There is 1 hermaphrodite, who has not undergone any indoctrination.

Let the mindfuck commence!

That's more optimistic than you think it is. Have you ever had a puzzle that you couldn't figure out, that you looked at in a million different ways and still couldn't figure it out? The "obvious" answer isn't always obvious.

Throw in the survival-instinct-makes-us-violent factor. People going into the Vaults are doing so to escape what is viewed at their time to be an inevitable nuclear holocaust. They end up in this Vault, not knowing anyone, not knowing if anyone is trustworthy, and then have to work together to figure this out, while they know the world outside is blowing up? Not as easy as it first appears at all.

There's also the isolation factor. This room is small for ten people. Tall but small and with no way of finding privacy. There are constant irritations that will settle in after the first hour as people realise they have to use toilets in the full view of everyone else, or ask everyone to look away. With the women, imagine the irritation at the men having the full ability to look, and perhaps vice versa. Fear settles in through this, alongside mistrust.

Out of twelve randomly selected people, there is also the probability that someone has an unknown or unexpressed mental issue. They might even try to manipulate others if, in their panic after getting into the Vault and assuming the bombs have dropped, they immediately think of the "kill others to break the screen" option, assuming the Vault itself is a sick joke designed to turn them into murderers. Despair can do that to people.

Not to mention, have you ever tried to stand on top of a group of twelve people without falling down? It's actually a demanding acrobatic feat a lot of the time. It takes co-ordination and often friendship. And we know from reality TV that groups of randomly selected people do NOT all immediately become friends with each other if they end up in a tightly packed situation with no way out. If they work together it is not through sturdy ties but a mutual goal, and this one might not seem so inspiring when they find themselves locked in the Sphere in the first place.
