I've drawn some shit and what I say is something usually humanoid, but maybe disfigured in a way. Glowing eyes, menacing face, for me I usually make it so you can see the joints and somewhat how it looks.

Make it look like a severely ravaged human that has had cybrog enhancements crudely fitted into it by jabbing them inside itself. Also make it look like it's been taken over/ infested with a giant insectoid organism. Also in the stomach area you need to make it look like a burning and impaled heart covered in eyes or just have one or two eyes in the middle of the heart. Also make the metal rusted; the flesh burnt, bleeding and rotting and the insects big, fat, juicy and squelchy.
For a nice touch make the head's mouth have a skull inside it. Also make it have a claw made of ribs, barbed wire and a poison barb of said insects.

And maybe if you're going for a horde of them interchangeable limbs bearing weapon systems? So they can salvage and act as team unit ie weapons support, close combat, sentry. That would be freaky, or a horde of dumbed down suicide droids kinda like a giant moving carpet of mobile land mines. Usually the freakiest and most successful machine constructs in entertainment have been those that mimic humans, ie terminator, screamers, that yul brenner cow boy thing to name a few. Sorry for the blather if you read all that crap.

There's two ways to approach this. It can be Portal-esque design (lots of curved surfaces,energy weapons,white/light gray plating,you get the idea). Or it can be a KillBot 5000 with lots of sharp edges,heavy weapons,and dark-colored plating. You choose.
For exact looks,try to dip into Uncanny Valley as much as you can. Think zombies. In case of KillBots,some rust will probably do the trick. Glowing red eyes are a neccesity. Another neccesary part is the sound/voice. EX-TER-MI-NATE!

Sorry just read some of your additional input, If its a mission specific female looking droid, perhaps making it hollow, like its rib cage and and limbs explode out into a grasping claw like construct that then engulfs the individual, and entombs them inside the machine itself, and then walks around with the individual trapped inside them held hostage as it were, completely over powered by the droids superior strength, ultimatley losing all freedom and control of ones body is pretty freaky no matter who you are.

well you seem to be pretty sorted on the construct side of things, perhaps, some freaky execution weapons pods, you've already mentioned flamers etc, how about a monofilament launcher that drives like a high tensile wire into the victim and speedily coils around there insides then retracts reducing them to chopped liver, acid sprays disolving them into a glutinous mass, triple stage aerosol bomblets, that deploy ,mist the room or open area and then detonate (ignite) creating a drop fuel bomb, that the droid can then just walk thru unharmed whilst all bio mass is consumed? Rapid fire shuriken weapons that severe fingers limbs etc. Compressed air powered ram rod that thrusts out of palm of the hand and can penetrate any armour transfixing the victims vitals. Sound emitters reducing anyone into the vicinity into a completely powerless state, overcome by noise. switchblades secreted in the forearms that can roll over the wrist axis, dismembering a hand captured in its grasp then been used to impale the victim. As a kill bot as it were the more indistinct and androdgenous, the scarier I'd think perhaps if it were secreted in a robe of some sort, like a hooded monks habit.
How about a re-animated corpse, with mechanical implants to keep it walking around? that'd be pretty freakish, particularly if it had metal fused to flesh - a chainsaw blade instead of a forearm? That sort of thing
