I am honestly dumbstruck by this.

I have to admit I am a PC elitest, but this is so damn sad.

A core game that was on the pc and even refined what could be done with an FPS is now dumbed down because of console... sigh.
That's a load of bullshit, Resistance (a console only shooter no-less) had the weapon wheel and that worked.

And before anyone says "consoles are where the sales are", most console players own PCs, so I fail to how it's stopping anyone, the majority of games are only good on consoles anyway due to the PC version being there so PC doesn't feel left out, and if the PC ports weren't shit people would probably play them more. I am sick of people blaming the consoles when it has been SHOWN to be a load of bullshit. I agree that PC FPS games are better, but this is BULLSHIT, nothing is stopping devs from just developing for PC and nothing stopping them from having more than two weapons ON THE CONSOLE VERSION.
Everyone may have a PC but not everyone has the technical expertise to builds a decent one or the money to buy a decent or even own a decent one. This is biggest factor Console gamers bring up about PC gaming.

Not every game is ported to PC.

Consoles are where the sales as more games are sold on consoles. Just because you have a larger potential market on PCs doesn't mean you will sell more. Although I do agree that there is probably a way of having a weapon wheel or something to that effect on consoles.
One important distinction though, the market for AAA shooters is bigger on consoles, overall the pc market is bigger, because you have mmos etc. Activision makes about 70% of their money on pc. (actually thats just wow, sc 2 and multiplatform titles etc aren't included)
And you don't need any expertise to buy a gaming pc, just buy a ready made mid-low range pc it'll look better then consoles.
didn't used to be that way but hardware has almost halted for 4 years.

Hah, it works fine on Duke Nukem' 3D on Xbox Live Arcade, so why shouldn't it work on DNF? Hey, in Borderlands you could have four weapons at once without much of a problem. Very odd.
Yeah, it seems like this is awfully inconsistent...

My hope is that Gearbox gets wind of this backlash and adjusts the game according to feedback, slotting in ten weapons again, because from what I saw of the demo it... really doesn't work with the two-gun-limit. It makes sense in Halo or Call of Duty where the weapons are relatively grounded and have a good deal of overlap, but here? There's a shrink ray, an RPG launcher, a Devastator, a chaingun, just a fuck-ton of weird-ass weapons that you want to experiment with, but having two weapons leaves you pigeon-holed into doing just the basics almost a hundred percent of the time.

I mean, there's Borderlands, that was friendly to this sense of experimentation... why not Duke? There's the Ratchet and Clank games, too, which have 24+ weapons, and they're some of the Playstation's most successful and critically acclaimed games. Shit, Metal Gear Solid lets Solid Snake pack in dozens of weapons and items. It seems like this shouldn't be that hard of a problem for them to sort out, and it's surprising that they'd just throw up their hands and give up when it's a problem that they themselves have already solved and that someone at the top of the dev team should have recognized as a problem during testing.

Trying to blame consoles because you took a stupid amount of time to make a game and did a turd job ? Not cool brah !

You can't say It's to do with the consoles at all. Look at Serious Sam that had like 20 guns and I never had a problem switching between them.........

And If It is such a problem to make It for a console make 2 different games or just don't make a console port. I don't even think Duke Is that big on the consoles none I know Is even getting It :S

This isn't dumbing down for consoles, this is just Gearbox being dumb anyway. They could easily have sorted those problems for consoles, they're just being idiotic.

its not the console fault at all, gearbox is a bunch of morons.
a game like turok(the N64 one) had a clever idea of holding down one button to bring up a circular selection wheel, then moving the joystick towards the one you wanted, then letting go of said button, and that game had like 20+ weapons, all on the person at the same time.

Oh for fucks sake.

What the hell is the D-Pad for again? As a console gamer I'm seriously pissed that developers use consoles as an excuse to cut corners. How many console gamers really want to be restricted to two weapons, especially when it's a game as over the top as DNF? Not many I'd gander.

They dumbed the amount of weapons down because of a lack of buttons on controllers and while they where alright with doing tweaks for the consoles they where to lazy to fix DNF for keyboard and mouse and allow the cut features on pc.
HAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh wow....blaming it on not enough buttons. I remember the original Duke Nukem 3D came out on Saturn, PSX and N64. They didn't have trouble mapping weapon selection there, did they?

An even if they think that is an excuse, use the FUCKING TUROK 2 WEAPON WHEEL! Just hold the fucking weapon change button pressed an select your weapon form your circle. Easy. At least they indirectly admitted they ripped off Halo.

Well we can't really include MMOs when talking in relation to consoles since they aren't on consoles but if you want to them yes the PC market dwarfs the console's market. That is due to the fact that MMO have very low technical requirements.

You do need technical expertise if you want to buy a decent PC/not be ripped off. As if you want to buy a decent ready made PC the cost will be near extortionate. So while on consoles here is a bit of a standstill on tech PC games are still having increasing minimum requirements. So I don't think a low range PC would cut it. If you were going to buy a PC you would be better off getting a half decent one anyway. I am not saying a low-mid is not possible though just you would be much better off taking the same money looking up a video on youtube and getting a mid-low high tiered PC.

For those of you interested of how the demo looks, here's a playthrough of it:

As for my own thoughts on this; I wanted Duke. Not ½Duke.
Yeah sure the setting, the character and the humor is still there, but it feels like Gearbox was just too cowardly to go back to the old ideas, everything that made Duke Duke.
I won't be buying this, that's for sure, Duke is man enough to carry 50 weapons if he was so inclined, 2 are just stupid. And the lack of the mighty boot is just sad.

Looks like I only have Space Marine and Deus Ex: HR left to look forward to this year.

I am usually neutral about consoles VS PC but this just stupid!
couldn't they use the HL2 system and assign a spare button to the mighty foot? what the hell man!

I think I can name lots of games on consoles that let you have more than 2 weapons and do it really well. Ok here goes theres Half Life 2, Serious Sam, Grand Theft Auto 4, Red Dead Redemption, Doom, The actual port of Duke Nukem 3d, Perfect Dark, Fallout 3/New Vegas and Oblivion. So there, saying you can only have 2 weapons because of consoles is a really bad excuse. They could of put a wheel or something but I think they just did the lazy approach. Im sure theres more so if you can think of any please say.

[EDIT] Bioshock 1 and 2 is another one. They also could of done a HL2 thing where Y or Triangle could change to the last weapon you had.

That's too bad. I was hoping for this to kick off the FPS's turn for retro games (lots of crazy guns, looking for keycards in non-linear levels). I guess I can understand why they'd want to update it a bit, but...why the mighty boot?!?

Oh well, I guess it could still be good...

Looks at the Timesplitters series or any PS2-era FPS. They all allowed you to carry as many weapons as were available so the Devs are just making up excuses and covering their arses for negative feedback and know that most PC gamers will rage at consoles if they're to blame. I hate this whole "dumbed down for consoles" notion. There is no reason not to allow the player to carry multiple weapons on a console. So many games have done this well in the past and it's a piss poor excuse. Also, in regards to the mighty boot, I'm assuming that it's just simple melee (never played a Duke Nukem game) so how did the consoles change that?

Fuck them and their attitude of blaming consoles when they aren't to blame. Also, anyone who is saying that consoles are a "dumb platform" you can shove it. Both consoles and PCs are perfectly viable for playing games and I use both a 360 and a PC to play games. Neither trumps the other and they're both as good at playing games.

I'm not buying the excuses here. Why couldn't they have the mighty boot on consoles? Bulletstorm did it. And Half Life 2 on The Orange box manages to deal with the multiple weapons thing just fine on consoles.

Don't blame consoles or console gamers for this please. If the changes they've made bug you, blame them, because there was no need to make any of them when with just a little creative thinking you can make PC titles work great on consoles with no dumbing-down whatsoever.

(When I read this thread title I thought, "Wait, The Duke's been DUMBED-DOWN! How? He was already even dumber than Serious Sam.")

The levels have weapons spread all over them. It's actually good gameplay to decide what to carry at any given time. Choices and consequence are good things in a game. I don't personally think it's good to carry 10 guns anymore, but that opinion is made irrelevant by the existence of consoles. It's not really worth the dev effort to support two different weapon switch schemes for pc vs controller, to say nothing of level and gameplay balance if one version of the game let's you carry 10 guns, and another, 2. The levels were all balanced with ample weapon drops and caches.
So...they are dumbing it down by having choice and consequence? the two-weapon limit adds a situational aspect to the combat by having you put thought into what you are going to carry, not just have it be a cake-walk by being able to carry a weapon for each situation.

This is just nostalgic knee-jerk reaction from some pissy fans. Nothing to see here.
