...Thankfully they haven't got ahold of passwords?! Who cares. Next to all the information they did yank thats like saying at least they didn't the random pine needles off the floor when they took the tree! Birthdays and e-mail addresses along with first and last names are a veritable bonanza.

Well, I was meaning to delete my DeviantArt account anyway, I hadn't touched it in years. Hopefully nothing too serious will come out of it, but it a'int makin' me any less paranoid than I already am...

Why am I hearing this from the Escapist and not from DeviantArt?
Also, why can't I find anything about this on their website?

This is pretty ridiculous. Gawker at least sent me an email right away.

I'm pretty upset about that Gawker thing, though. As it turns out, the passwords in their database were not encrypted and so my password was stolen. I'm not a happy camper.
Storing passwords as plaintext is such a basic security flaw. I can't really believe that those guys would code their website in such a poor manner.

Let's hope the Escapist doesn't get hacked.
I hope that my password isn't stored in plaintext here, at least.

Good thing I never made an account on that site. Even if I did I wouldn't put my personal information on it unless it were required.

I'm glad I never made an account. I lurked on that site from time to time, searching for cool new icons and for other stuff.

It's a sad day for furry lovers.

That's okay, The mods will just permaban anybody who uses the word "Hack" in any context for the next month. Also, a bunch of people who don't, just for shits and giggles.

They didn't store it in plain text...though it wasn't much better...it was encrypted using DES...which was cracked like 10 years ago. It's pretty much equivalent to using WEP for wireless security. It's better than nothing, but not much better.

I was affected by both breaches. My password was complex at gawker so it would take a bit of time to crack it. I have since changed any passwords I actually care about that were the same as my gawker password (including escapist). So the only thing I really care about that got out was my email, same as here, same email too. So I'll definitely thoroughly be spammed. Fortunately gmail has decent spam protection.

Ah, I see. My bad for not reading further, although that's pretty weak as well.

I use Google apps myself, so in case I get any spam, I'm equally protected. Gotta love that Google mail.

Oh no... I'm going to get spammed... As if I wasn't already... And my email and birthday are already public on there...

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that these are lamest hackers around?

Hmmm, I just checked and while I've had my account for about 2 years now, to which I actually put work on. I've received no email, or notification what so ever on this hacking, and like a few others are getting this information from The Escapist rather then the site. This is sad...

The funny thing is is that is usually true. The mods are basically trolls, but we love them anyway.
