Diablo III Sells Like Crazy

Diablo's going to need a bigger army.

Despite a rocky launch [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/117262-Server-Issues-Mar-Diablo-IIIs-Launch], it won't come as surprise to hear that Diablo III has sold like hotcakes since its release last week. Blizzard has officially announced the sale figures for Diablo III, revealing that it sold approximately 6.3 million copies of the action-RPG to date, nearly 3.5 million copies of which sold within the first 24 hours.

"We're definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo III and jump in the moment it went live," said Blizzard co-founder Mike Morhaime, who went on to apologize for the server issues that marred Diablo III's launch day.

"We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so," he continued. "I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo III players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward, and I also want to thank them for their ongoing support.

"Regarding today's announcement, we recognize that setting a new launch record is a big achievement. However, we're especially proud of the gameplay feedback we've received from players worldwide. We're pleased that Diablo III has lived up to players' high expectations, and we're looking forward to welcoming more players into Sanctuary in the days ahead."

Translation: Bitches, we rollin' in dough! Oh, and we may kick a few people out of the gigantic money pile to free a little more space for our whinin' ass customers. If we feel like it. Bitches.

So either everyone who bitched about the DRM is a whiny hypocrite and bought it anyway, or the vast percentage of gamers who like this type of game don't care that Blizzard is spoon feeding them shit.

Only way we'll see no more DRM is if they saw sales numbers of maybe 1 million or something along with hundreds of thousands of people saying:

"No! We won't take this garbage anymore. You don't say when and how we can play the games we bought!"

I didn't buy it for this reason, and I wish others felt the same. I mean I work at a work site 30 weeks a year with no internet access so that means I'm not allowed to play something I could buy? How is that fair? Steam does it just fine without always online DRM.

obvious spin doctor bs is obvious....

so many players hate this new incarnation of diablo its uncanny, be it for the DRM , the shady business decisions , the o so hard to miss "we care for moneys more than we care for our customers" mentality that's been going on since activation got involved and many other
reasons.

i loved blizzard games, but now iam not giving them the benefit of the doubt any longer
they don't deserve the loyalty they have at this point.

This is the reality of the gaming industry. Gamers can *****, moan, and pitch hissy fits till they are blue in the face, but, at the end of the day, they'll just buy the game anyway because they can't help themselves. Only two sounds ever matter, the creak of the wallet opening and the slap of the wallet closing. All other sounds (and furious nerd-raging) are just noise to be ignored.

Shame all that money went to Blizzards pockets. Never been a Blizzard fan so I dont understand what the big draw with them and their games are. Regardless, the super sweet DRM should have been enough to make people think twice about this purchase.

Honestly, all that money should have gone to industry heroes like CD Project Red.

The thing is that Blizzard games have a long history of being excellent and spectacular, and still are.

Just know that DRM means nothing if the games are great, especially if the DRM is familiar and the producer (Blizzard) doesn't abuse it.

Apparently not.

I honestly don't know why gamers even bother complaining, when all they do is go out and buy this crap anyway. You think giving them your money is enough to make Blizzard listen to you? Do you think they care that you're unhappy that they always have to be online, when you've already shown you're quite willing to fork out for it? This happens time and time again; big developer produces increasingly derivative games, decked out with the latest in fuck-the-consumers whizz-bang DRM technology, which is hacked to pieces within hours of release anyway, all the fanbase is in uproar (and invariably in the right), and then all of a sudden it doesn't even matter, because the games just broke sales records in several countries, and the devs and publishers are rolling in money.

At this point, I wouldn't even care if the game comes equipped with specialised virus software that invades the users computer and wipes the harddrive if it detects even the slightest hint of a pirated file, because everyone would just buy the damned thing anyway. The problem is gamers getting all in a huff about it. Just shuttup, ok? Because noone is listening to you, and noone even cares.

So if a game is perceived to be "great" it doesn't matter what the DRM is? We should just shut up and take it? I think not. Most DRM methods, including Blizzards attempt to force people who want to play single player to ask for their permission to do so (via login) are only a way to inconvenience a customer.

A one time activation/log in for a single player validation at install is fine, but every time I want to play? No. Keep this method/mentality moving in the direction is it and you won't be able to play anything when your ISP goes down or modem/router have issues.

Blizzard has resorted to treating it's customers like criminals and forcing them into a system to potentially take advantage of then via real money AH system. What, you thought server side setup and forcing people online with an AH system for real money trade was to help prevent hacking issues? Oh I see....

The news doesn't surpise me due to that other news weeks ago that it is the most preordered game on Amazon.

Same for me. Gameplay changes and the Auction house are all debatable issues as far as I'm concerned, but Always-On just isn't acceptable. It was BS when Ubisoft did it, it was BS when EA did, and its bullshit now. The only reason I didn't get it was the DRM, and if they took it out today I wouldn't bother finishing this sentence before I bought the game.

Damnit guys, the game is good. Be a srs bsns activist if you want but stop hating everyone who bought it.
There is a slight issue with that. The fact that other people are okay with this means that there's a higher chance that we'll have to put up with this for all of our games, and not just a few each year. If Blizz can show other companies that DRM like this works, we're totally screwed, and that's thanks, in part, to our fellow gamers.

However, I'd agree there's definitely a right and wrong way to go about it, a stern reproach as opposed to a fiery hate.

My real fear here is that this DRM will actually work. What will it say to other publishers if, 4 or 5 months down the line, the game still can't be pirated properly? Even ones who are anti-DRM (CD Project and Paradox, say) will have a hard time justifying something honestly effective.

I think Diablo's online requirement is substantially different than the Assassin's Creed one. I think Blizzard isn't treating us like criminals, but instead are treating us like children. The fact is, even when you play single player there are a bunch of multiplayer components. You can chat with your friends, you see their achievements pop up, you see them come online and offline, you see your achievements, you can seamlessly bring people into your game. These all require an internet connection. Blizzard thinks they are an essential part of the single player experience and they are willing to enforce their view. In some sense Diablo doesn't even have a single player component. Its a multiplayer game that you can play by yourself.

Does it make it better? I don't know. I enjoy the social aspects, but if I didn't then it would be irritating to have them forced down my throat.
