Mass Effect 3 is absolutely an amazing game. It's almost perfect, I only have a couple of small problems with it. Until the ending, which just completely ruined the series for me. Still worth the money and you'll love it until the last five minutes.

If you chop the last ten minutes of, I'd give ME3 a 10/10. It is perfect and absolutely the strongest in an already high quality series. It is everything it needed to be. Then some weird shit happened at the end.
So what you're saying is that you'd have rather the game just stopped dead 20 minutes early with no explanation?

Smart.

Sorry if it seems I'm picking on you or using you as an example, I'm personally just getting a little nerked with the majority of people saying 'it was all good, except the last 20 minutes HURR!' as if it's funny and/or clever.

Like I've already said, if you all thought it was flawless until the last 20 minutes then that's more of a success than most games manage.

Best game I ever played. Or at least my all time favourite. Loved everything, including the ending. Got emotional plenty of times throughout, and the combat, dialogue and general story are pretty much perfected.

In time, when a lot of people have calmed down about the ending, I think this game is going to become one of those all time classics.
No, I think It's going to be remembered as the great third part that FUBAR'd it at the last minute.

I mean for god's sake how much development time would it take just to show a glimpse of the alien homeworlds after the battle? Show Palaven, show a female krogan holding a baby on Tuchanka (if you cured the genophange), show the Quarians and the Geth building houses on Rannoch ( if you got them to get along), show ANYTHING AT ALL, it would add up to 30 seconds of video that would actually show the impact of your decisions at the end of the game.

And take out the Normandy crashing on an uncharted planet, because that makes no sense, and it's impossible in the eyes of someone who has even the most basic understanding of physics.

I loved it, I was a little put off by the endings but only because I'm not a fan of the "hero must martyr himself" endings that are being used for the bigger game series (Halo 3).

I'd go as far as to say 98% of the game was straight gold. It's really an excellent game. I have some issues with some of the pacing, and some flat dialogue in parts, and some things I might've done differently, but my expectations were sky high, and a lot of times it actually met them, and that's extraordinary.

I don't HATE the ending. It's not Ultima IX bad. It's not Fallout 3 bad. But given the quality of the game and the series that preceded it, and the emotional connection I, and others, formed with these characters and this world, it's unquestionably the most disappointing ending I've ever experienced. And probably the one I most badly want rectified.
Pretty much what I was going to say although I was more than "disappointed" with the ending. I'm vocal about it but I'm not one of the many calling for Fatwa over this.

Yes I hated the ending but with good reason. The rest of the game(s) leading up to the end are AWESOME (Fanboy? Yep, no denying it) which makes the final 1% more so crushing.

This game...

This game was years in the making when i fell in love with 1.

It gave me a wide range of emotions I haven't really felt with any medium, be it a movie, book or game. It raises the best of questions, the philosophical and moral ones. It makes you laugh, cry, etc.

And even the ending...it's finalistic but open ended enough for me to keep wondering. Which is what I find many people forget when they talk about the ending: Let your god damn imagination fill in the rest. Like the Synthesis ending. It honestly took me a while to get to sleep last night because I was working out what it meant.

But Mass Effect 3? If you've played the first two games, it's probably the first game I've actually shed a tear playing. The worst part is with Bioware games is that you have to set them down for a while before you can go through it again.

While I don't think Mass Effect 3 is the greatest game out there, it's easily one of the most enjoyable experiences I've ever had in gaming I think. Besides the ending, the occasional technical problems and glitches, and the journal not really being helpful, it is a very awesome game. Almost everything else is mostly how you personally feel about certain things. Some people may dislike how planet scanning is now, others may love it.

For example, while I don't feel like the squad members are as forgettable or useless this time around (compared to ME2 anyway), I tend to be conflicted when I try to put a team that balances me out correctly versus a team that will provide the most banter into a certain mission. Others obviously might feel different.

ME3 just does a lot of things right. While I didn't cry, I felt pretty emotional at a lot of things that went down. I was totally sucked into the story and characters since Mass Effect 1, moreso than any other game than I have played. Don't care how you feel about the ending, I feel that everyone should try out this series. I'm glad that I did. =)

You will love every hour of this game, and the endings are by no means bad, they're just disappointing

Just as most others in this thread, I'd say 99% of the game is an incredible experience up until the very last minutes. The ending is not the worst I've seen, but it is definetly not good.

Its not a game without its flaws before that last 1% though, and it becomes clear it is a game where certain shepard "stereotypes" and certain companions are given a lot more love and attention then others. My shepard fit into one of those stereotypes that got a huge ton of attention, especielly because I romanced Liara, and that might possibly be the romance option that is given the most attention throughout the entire trilogy, especielly if you've played the shadowbroker dlc from ME2.
All in all, ME3 feels more of a tribute to ME1, its story and above all its characters then it feels a tribute to ME2, but ME2 is definetly not ignored. Cerberus and TIM being perhaps the major exception as they are given a -ton- of attention.

What strikes me as the most odd about this entire game is the sheer contrast in quality between the first 99% of the game and the ending. It is such a remarkable jump from sheer awesomeness to sheer and utter crap, that its the strongest gutpunch that I've had in a gaming experience. It is almost surreal, and I -really- wonder what Bioware was thinking. Maybe every gifted soul at Bioware called in sick at the last day of game creation, or maybe they've were all indoctrinated from a recovered three-coloured reaper artifact.

Despite all this, I'd call it a must buy, and if Bioware manages to repair the broken ending, then my faith in them will be restored. Until then, I need to find some medigel for my gut.
Maybe the multiplayer section has some.

I would've liked a bit more variety with the squad, and maybe a bit of a tinkering with the end, but overall, I thought it was pretty good.

I personally thought that Liara's experience with Thessia and it's aftermath was one of the best examples of character development in the entire series, almost as good as, well, Lair of the Shadow Broker. Mind you, I've always liked Liara and I was romancing her at the time so maybe I'm just biased. Garrus is definitely my second favorite after her though.

Did you have Javik in your game, because I imagine without him Liara's arc probably has less impact?
Ok, I admit, the development on Liara after Thessia was well done. But who's Javik?
The Last Prothean, a squad-mate you get with the From Ashes DLC

It's good, but "Holy crap, this is outstanding" is pushing it. It is really good, but I am hoping something better will eventually come out later in the year.

I did, completely and totally. The game is a masterpiece. I even like the ending, even if it is a bit on the vague side.

Don't let the outrage dissuade you. Even the more adamant haters will admit that 95% of the game is straight gold.
Oh thank all the Dark Powers of the Multiverse, I'm not the only one that loved Mass Effect 3.

Until the last 5 minutes, it was the single greatest gaming experience of my life.
great, what will be the second game youve played in your life?
Why the need for a mean comment like this? It's basically like saying "You are ridiculous for liking this game and your preferences, opinions and interests are shit".
Funny how the white knights come out to play when it's a western rpg.

Now let's see them come out of the woodworks when someone says they like Final Fantasy.

In the short time I've been on this site, SurfinTaxt's predisposition is what's dominant around these parts. So yea... the Escapist is just like every other forum out there.

The ending shouldn't leave things like everything you've fought for throughout 3 games up to the imagination, it should make things like that clear defined and final, that's why it's an ending. That's what we were promised, an amazing definitive ending. What we got was rushed confused excuse for an ending that's riddled with plot holes and continuity errors that blatantly rips off the original Deus Ex and doesn't even bother telling you what your decisions meant for the galaxy.

I love the game, I think it's the best in the series. Except the end. I could do without the end.

As someone who "hates" the ending I will tell you that the game overall is still worth it and a fantastic experience. I would buy and play it again shitty ending and all. I'll likely play through it again a few more times over the next year or two.

However that ending was about as fun as a brick to the face. I probably will just leave my games saved right before that ending unless its fixed. After all it doesn't matter how you play the game since you get all the options/endings so long as you have 5K+ war assets.

I bought ME3 based on the escapist's recommendation, and I'm disapointed to say the least. I used to rely on the escapist not to tell me a game is great when it isn't. But maybe it's just my opinion, and they haven't started whoring themselves after all, so if you agree with the reviewer that "holy crap, this game is outstanding", please let me know.
Building Consensus....

Consensus achieved. All but the last five minutes of the games was fantastic. However, if one has not played the previous two games, it will not be as interesting. The main appeal of the game comes from interaction with the characters and building relationships over the course of three games. If a character like dies when you just started the Mass Effect series, it means a lot less than if you've built a relationship with the character.

I loved it, I really did, but I'd have to say I agree with the people who said that it takes the first two to really appreciate. There are numerous scenes in ME3 which fall short in a fresh play-through, with a new character, because many of the old companions don't show up anymore. There's a wealth of emotion and lore and investment which only shows up if you're a long time player of the series, as far as I could see. Of course, there's a bias there, unavoidable. In any case, I don't know if the new player's experience can truly compare to an old player's, but on the other hand, I'm not sure how the writers could've done a better job of balancing out all the choices and events. It's as good as it can be, in my opinion. Including the endings. So there.
