Yeah, well, that's part of the PS3 experience unfortunately. It's a large part of why I bought MW2 for 360 even though I own a PS3 too. It's also why I don't raise holy hell over the yearly subscription fees for XBox Live: because it's worth it.
Well if you're going to boast about the Xbox 360...I don't pay for any extra subscription fees for gaming on the PC and guess what? It's NEVER down. If the server I like is off for maintenance I just find another.

That said, these sales figures don't surprise me too much. I'll admit I'm a little happy to see the relatively low percentage of PC sales.
Not boasting at all- I game on PC too, but mostly with RPGs (which always end up with fubar control schemes on consoles anyways). I prefer some types of games on PC, some on 360, and some on PS3, and honestly I've always thought the fanboyism of PCs/various consoles was pretty retarded. They're all good platforms for their own reasons. I was just explaining why I didn't buy it on the PS3 and why I don't mind paying a couple bucks per month for Xbox Live.

My fault for misinterpreting your intentions then. Welcome to the Escapist btw :)

Thanks! Seems like a pretty cool gaming community, and I've had a lot of trouble finding places to talk about games that aren't pretty much infested by melodramatic types. I have already had the plot of MW2 spoiled on this forum, but I don't really care anyways, so no big ;)

What actually happened in the UK is that the major retailers SLASHED prices, Sainsburys releasing the game at £26 as opposed to the suggested £55, then Morrisons followed suit and other retailers such as Amazon and Asda knocked it down to £32. Sainsburys released the game at the price of a budget title and cheaper then the current RRP for the first Modern Warfare, it was more like the cost of a couple of DVDs then a video game and as a result everyone FLEW in and took it at the lower retail before the prices go back up to the £45 - £55 mark.

I wasn't going to buy it until it became cheaper or hold out for christmas but at £26....... thats soooo cheap, on average UK wage thats like 2 - 4 hours work.
Yeah this is what absolutely blows my fuckin' mind. I thought "this is a disaster, all the lemmings just threw themselves off the cliff, and they don't even do that in real life!" - but nope, it just goes to show cheaper things sell better and the profit was unbelievably well. This could actually be wonderful.

There goes the neighborhood.

The neighborhood of gaming companies who believe in quality and community feedback rather than profit. But I guess you could argue that boat sailed back when Halo 3 came out. This just snapped the anchor line.
Wait, the boat departed with anchors down? That's a bad way to sail a boat.

Me, I'm not buying it, and I'm maybe renting it at some point in the distant future. Yay for me! I don't support evil gaming companies!

Notice how these are UK sales records? As in, the test region for bumping up the price to see how it affects sales? I'm sure this will have a good impact on our wallets...
Oh god, you're right...

You guys need to realize that CoD is all about the multiplayer. Who cares if the campaign is short? I haven't even played the single player yet. All that matters to me is that I was playing CoD4 regularly up until about 2 days ago. I've been loving every minute of MW2, which is basically CoD4 but with way more ability to customize buildouts, and with a new multiplayer co-op component. I have absolutely no reservation with paying 50 bucks for that. As far as the message that we're sending to the gaming industry, it seems to be: if you make an awesome game, with multiplayer that offers hundreds of hours of replay value, a lot of people will buy it. I'm okay with that.

BTW, I game on PC, PS3, and 360. I bought MW2 on 360 because I prefer the ease of use for Xbox Live. I know that all the PC gamers will look down their nose at me because of this, but frankly I don't care. Have fun boycotting every game that doesn't give you exactly what you want, I guess.
I like this guy? He knows what he wants, he can spell, and he knows when to piss on people that are annoying...

As for my own thoughts? Well I might buy the game still and I like the setting... And are you really surprised that a safety blanket like this would sell well? Granted even I "The Pessimist" did not expect this...

What.
That's ridiculous.
People are just... wow. One good game in a series and the next one sells like hotcakes that dispenses massages and awesome ninja katana stuff?

It's just plain stupid.
I plan to rebel by maybe buying it before the 15th, haha!
You sir, are quite the scally wag!

12 million? Really. Wow. All I can say - ridiculous. But... whatever. I'll just show my support to good developers instead.
Call me crazy, but if this is one of the best selling games of all time, then I think Infinity Ward might just be a good developer. They obviously realize what a lot of people want in a game. Just because it's not what you want doesn't mean the developer sucks.

Anyways, I'm surprised to hear that the game has already sold that many copies. I'm tempted to rent it just to see how good it really is.

Damnit, this is really tempting me. Activision has been pissing me off lately and I don't want them to see a dime of my money, but damnit MewTwo is looking damn fine. I'll probably borrow it from a friend, but damnit if it doesn't look tempting right now...

I'm not surprised seeing the prices on Monday. £26 is an insane price for a AAA release, espicially one with the guaranteed popularity of Mewtwo (I love that name). I guess this is more proof of the awesomeness of competition.

And now Infinity Ward will not learn their lesson and continue to screw over the public...
They are screwing over the public with an excellent well designed game with a fun story mode? If that is the case Rockstar as well is also screwing over the public for making their games too enjoyable.

Good job, Activision. Your faith in the homo oeconomicus has proven successful yet again. Fuck quality, it's all about profit.
The game is well made. The controls are easy to use, The single player campaign is quite fun with excellent plot elements, and the multiplayer is also quite fun as well.

My thoughts exactly, sadly. Activision have already made their "Profit is all, screw fun" stance clear. They're certainly not going to change their mind if they're having such success with that method. I wouldn't be surprised if other games publishers begin to follow their example. Gamers are killing innovation in the gaming industry by continuing to support companies like Activision.
Have you played the game? It's fucking amazing. Pretty sure they listened to someone.

While I don't think something that's popular is automatically good (case in point, Transformers 2), didn't we gamers all agree that CoD4 was pretty... awesome? I mean, come on, even Yahtzee admitted it was exceptional. On that note, I just beat MW2's campaign in one sitting and ALREADY I feel I've gotten my money's worth.

So hey, good job, Infinity Ward! You guys deserve it. Excellent game.

How is the game's campaign for difficulty? If it's easier than the first MW, I'll probably try it on Veteran the first time through, in order to get more time out of the single-player game.
