Play CoD4 multi-player on Hardcore...

Oh the things I saw...the horror...the...horror...
failboat. The entire cod series is hundreds of kilometers from "realistic".

Play flashpoint or ARMA or even Red Orchestra.

EDIT: Also ghost recon/rainbow six before Vegas and Advanced Warfighter. And IL2-Sturmovik.

One of my favorite games ever (Gothic and Gothic II) had a very cheap move whereby you simply could not damage some creatures until you found a good enough weapon. It didn't matter that you'd learned the difficult sword-strike timing or how to dodge properly, you JUST COULDN'T KILL IT.

It was still a fun game, but that one issue made it extremely harsh when you were just getting started.

Poppycock.

Have you even played it on hardcore with a proper team?
You need to know when to advance, you need to know how to cover someone and you need to know how to use your grenades. No helicopters, no air strikes.

Just because you had a bad game experience with others that doesn't mean I had one.
Yes. Infact I was on a CAL-O>IM>M cod1>2>4 team and co-founded www.e-rev.tv. Trust me, I know CoD. Half the game is throwing grenades at clouds and pre-firing through walls.

Also recoil is next to non-existent.

Not to derail the thread but:

-CoD/CoD: UO > 48th Highlanders (CAL-O and TWL (#1 ranked domination and #2 TDM))
-CoD2 > Highlanders > Count-it (CAL-IM)
-Cod4 > Count-it then after sponsorship > Team Madcast. (CAL-M)

And www.e-rev.tv is an e-sports match casting company; but due to the rapid decline of interest in CoD4 competition it's rather stagnant at the moment. We've been contracted to live-cast quite a few LANs. (Here is a sample I uploaded to GT a while back. Bad quality though. [http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/189903.html]) (remixed by the decerto team for their movie)

Wow, huge points for no one caring and being way off topic.

Almost, almost hit on a good area of discussion in cheap vs difficult in online FPSs. Counter-Strike always felt cheap until you got half good at it (but then there was AWPs). CoD4 is great except for the occasional sky-balled 'nade exploding your tits off randomly in deathmatch.

He asked =(

And that sir, would be the infamous "set-nades"!

And to touch on the previous point:

ARMA: Being surpressed by very inaccurate assault-rifle fire only to be headshot completely out of the blue from 2000+ metres away while prone behind dense shrubbery (on the lowest difficulty I may add...)

When the enemies cease to feel realistic and start feeling like robots set to kill... In other words: If a game is playable, but difficult, it's fine. If a game requires nothing but sheer perfection to kill an enemy, then it can go fuck itself.

I count as "cheap" things like, bots that ALWAYS get headshots and know where you are regardless, which is basically a bot with wallhack and aimbot, bots that pull combos that nobody could realistically pull, Jinpaichi from Tekken 5 (don't need to explain I hope), and basically characters that make it downright impossible for you to beat them if they don't make a mistake (i.e: Jinpaichi).

Good god damn that game was vicious on Hard. I beat the entire thing on 100% and I'm pretty sure I was one of the first in the country to do so. Some of the arcade challenges were near insane to get Gold on.
playing through the storyline co-op was the bane of my life, We could of probably play the siberian dam mission blindfolded by the end of it though. and do you remember the challenge to brick all of the window on a timer, so so so painful but just liquid joy when i finally got the gold.

Mass Effect's hardest difficulty gives almost every enemy in the game master immunity

meaning that 90% of the time, every enemy you fight has 80% damage resistance on top of what they'd normally have.

it's a little ridiculous :p

That's mostly just the Krogan, but it means that the ones you do fight are able to magically restore their life as soon as you kill them. Biotics are absolutely essential to playing on that difficulty, but even then it's ridiculously hard in some situations. That Krogan Battlemaster on Therum, the one with the unskippable cutscene before him? The one you fight where the only cover will kill you every ten seconds or so if you're too close to it? The one where snipers will kill you in one hit every time if you don't immediately take them out? Not to mention that the Battlemaster has a habit of charging you and meleeing you to death in two hits maximum? Yeah, pure hate. I attempted that for about two hours straight before finally beating it.

I played through it with a soldier, Garrus and Wrex.. so very little biotics.

and it's not just the krogan. The humans that you fight that aren't designated as biotics or snipers will also pop Immunity instantly when you start fighting them.

And I was playing a purely tank Shock Trooper, so all those problems like "Sniper killing you in one hit" or "Meleeing you to death in 2 hits maximum", even on insanity I didn't have a problem.

Thresher Maws take like 5 melee hits to kill my soldier shep when he has immunity up, and because its cooldown is shorter then its duration, I can keep it up indefinitely..

I wouldn't suggest the character build on the whole though, just because he does piss damage..

still, LOTS of immunity using enemies in Insanity.. the hardest part of the game for me in that mode was the thorian, just because I did such piss poor damage, the creepers just became too much a lot of the time.. just had to go slow and kill everything, and use a lot of sledgehammer rounds.

Thanks for just destroying my only little sliver of accomplishment. Im sorry my fat little fingers can't twitch to the insane platinum beat.

On a less hostile note... Yeah but there was literally no way i was going to get platinum on that particular challenge, gold was enough. i think platinum was just there for when you fluked an insane good time due to some glitch and or the perfect combination of luck and skill.

I'm sorry too, I wasn't trying to put you down, you must have got a couple.

I think Platinums were there for the extra challenge. I got a load of them. At least half. Maybe i'll fire it up and see how much skill i've lost.

Goldeneye.
Level 2 - Facility
2.05mins. For the Cheat.
Whatever.

That's the only one I needed for 100%. I've seen a video of someone doing it. Pfft.

There are some things you just have to let go.

Half Life 2
prison level - gun turrets
waves an waves of guards/antlions pick up the gun turrets waves and waves of pick up gun turrets waves and gun turrets pick up hide hide

It just seemed a disparity of difficulty - never want to replay that part again.

You mean gafgarion? where you attack lionol castle and ramza has to fight him alone while your squad deals with the pricks on the other side of the gate?

Yeah i did get a few, but as i say it was mainly fluking that extra 5-10seconds off your time that got the platinum, i couldn't get any consistantly. my best speed challenge was probably hitman blood money. (the one at the opera) 27 seconds. very little silent about the way i did it though.
