Director Walks Away from Uncharted Movie

The director's changes to the Uncharted backstory may have been a little too much for Sony.

David O. Russell, who has directed movies like The Fighter and Three Kings , has walked away from the Uncharted movie. Insider sources suggest that the split was amicable, and the Academy Award-nominated director could not resolve his creative differences with Sony.

On several occasions, Russell had talked [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105791-Uncharted-Director-Changing-Drakes-Back-Story] about his vision for the Uncharted movie. Protagonist Nathan Drake would belong to a secretive underworld family that policed the trade of antiquities and relics all across the world. According to Mark Wahlberg [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/105618-Mark-Wahlberg-Confirmed-For-Lead-Role-in-Uncharted-Movie], who was believed to have secured the lead role, we would also get to meet Drake's father and uncle, characters that as yet have not appeared in the games. Wahlberg said that he and Russell hoped to get Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci to play those roles, although nothing official was ever confirmed.

Russell's ideas seemed to be a pretty big departure from the Uncharted games' plot, a fact that he acknowledged [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/107928-Uncharted-Movie-Director-Responds-to-Fan-Criticism ], saying that fans would have to trust him. It seems, however, that one or more of his ideas - and it might not be the ideas that we know about - weren't to Sony's tastes. It's kind of a shame to see Russell go, as while he seemed hell bent on changing things, he also seemed to be taking the project quite seriously, and wanted to recruit some seriously high-profile talent.

This doesn't spell the end of the Uncharted movie however, as Sony is said to still be "aggressively" developing the property. Maybe someone should tell Nathan Fillion [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/108146-Nathan-Fillion-Doesnt-Blame-Director-for-Uncharted-Casting-Decisions] he might be in with a shot again?

I'm okay with this. I thought his changes were going to be too drastic when they were first announced.

Get Nathan Fillion!

It's unanimous that Mr.Fillion is needed.
Who's with me! Twitter campaign #NathanFillionAsNathanDrake

It would seem weird with such an outspoken fan base that Nathan Fillion doesn't get it.

I hope Sony lets people who know who to make movies make movies, not hire some dud to make it.

True despite how much Nathan Drake gets on my nerves with his sarcasm changing a great game like Uncharted is just stupid a good idea for the change but it wouldn't have made me that happy but get Nathan Fillion.

David O. Russell is a talented director, however he wasn't the right fit for this, however I doubt Sony will find a better director for this. I mean they got the writer of "The legend of Chun-Li" to write the Shadow of the colossus movie, Are you fucking kidding me ?!!

This is so insane. Why are we making a movie out of a fucking cinematic game again? U2 was pretty much 80% on it's way to being a film anyway.

Hollywood - so few ideas they now just remake the movies that the gaming industry has already "filmed."

I for one can understand why the director wanted to depart from the script of Uncharted. He doesn't want to make a live action copy of the cutscenes with a new actor. Makes sense to me.

am i the only person who has never seen the point of an uncharted movie, after all the whole point of the games is that they are all about capturing the look and feel of big budget hollywood action movies, so an uncharted movie, to me, seems to be a big budget hollywood action movie capturing the look and feel of a big budget hollywood action movie, and i think that that is pointless

I hope they take more from the game than just what the cut scenes gave, even though there were a lot of them. But, yeah, Nathan Fillion all the way. I can only hope that the next guy they find to direct it will take the project just as seriously as Russell did. And I wonder who they will get to play Sully?

The Browncoats have spoken. We want our beloved Capatin! It would be wise if you acknowledge our requests.

I'm all against movies based on games (except for maybe Resident Evil or Tomb Raider), but I could watch it this if it had Nathan Fillion.

After seeing every other game based movie end up just awful, I doubt this one will turn out any better.
