Oh, and can we agree to stick with, if not simply the base triad of books, then at least NOT psionics. Man, I hate them.
Agreed!! That way everyone will be on the same page.
why no psionic? i guarantee they get bluffed just like everyone else, and no-one survives when splodey goes off

Don't play "DnD" so to speak, but I do plenty of Pen and Paper roleplaying, I usually play or run Pulp Adventure Campaigns or Sci-Fi Westerns.

i used to play d&d a lot, i've been playing on and off for over 20 years, i still have my basic d&d rulebook AND box at home, i missed out seeing gary guygax a couple years ago which sucked cause he just died

as for fun in d&d the best time i had in a campaign was the high lvl campaign we had, all started at lvl 22 or so, mages are so much fun at that lvl, especially with prismatic sphere and the army killing power of meteor swarm

tho if the dm lets you be a psionist that can be a lot of fun

i had a friend who was a rule nazi, it really sucked cause as he said "if it wasn't in the book it can't be changed cause that would change everything", tho it was funny when he got nailed bending a rule. he whined and complained about it and the dm used his exact excuse he would tell us, which made the guy madder and funnier to the rest of us

a couple reasons, they're hard to play, dm's don't know how to deal with them and players don't know how to play them

i'd have fun with mine when i played one, i got into a duel once, told the player it's a custom in my land to touch the opponents helm before a duel and say a small prayer, of course i was setting up detonate on his helm, the dm knew this via a note i passed to him, once the duel started i set it off and he died, the dm laughed

best item to give them is a cube of force, if done right they are basically unstoppable

psionics take a lot of cunning and thinking differently, a lot of their attacks aren't direct

if i cant be evil then its not worth playing!
So... your arguement equates too "The only way for the game to be fun for me is if I can FUCK with everyone else and the DM", basically that your good time comes at the expense of everyone elses... you are clearly in the wrong hobby.

That's not my problem with them at all; I'm a guy who picked up a Beguiler (PHB 2) as my first ever character, and impressed the DM with him. My problem is that with only a bit of understanding they can be made WTF powerful.

I like low-to-mid level. I love starting out low level (1-3) and being terrible at nearly everything because it makes you feel vulnerable and forces you to think, roleplay, be creative, etc. I also like mid-level (4-8 is my loose definition) because you're still not too safe but can reasonably kick back and slaughter things when you want to. I could go a few levels up but high level play doesn't interest me very much.

I find for D20 products Level 6 is the "Magic" level, you have enough abilities to make your character interesting, enough power to fight the cool monsters/badguys, you can take a hit, the game is still challenging and there's plenty of room for advancement.

Or Baseless Chaos for that matter, I figure the game should be fun for everyone, even the GM... and I like to run story based games, where insane characters often don't fit.

Lowish level. The unstoppable power of the higher levels is only enjoyable once you have earned it with blood, sweat, and tears.

Level 4-6 I think is a good start!

And what is it with players fighting with their DMs? =| Ugh I hate people who think they are awesome cos they can make a broken character.. Selfish

Luckly for my game group we've all decided that the DM have absolute power.. Basicly we can use the 'because I said so' rule. Aslong as no one abuses it (all the DMs are mature enough not to be dicks) its fantastic!

I personally don't think Psions are really that difficult. I have a Wilder- granted, that's the easiest class simply because the character's not even sure what's going on, but my DM is quite fond of Psions and uses them a lot, so I finally decided to make one of my own. Addie's my first psion and I seem to be just fine understanding the mechanics. I'm actually a little excited to see the 4.0 psions, I hear they're going to have a lot more mind-control power to give them their own "flavor".

I've been playing 2-3 times a week for about 7 years, I've played all of the editions, I've been almost every type of pc (execpt Psions) and also been the Dm several times. I've never played PnP though, you mind if i try it out?

D&D is sweet, but I prefer the White Wolf games myself. I just seem to be able to do better at DMing them, and I like the emphasis on storytelling they have.

I've really only ever played it a few times, and mostly they were kind of boring cuz my friend wasn't really a very good DM. But one time when I played with my step-brother and his cousins was really fun. We were in a dungeon fighting a bunch of trolls and trying to lure them into these acid gas traps, good times.

I heartily agree. I had a player like that once, now in general I have a strict no in party killing but this guy managed to make me hate him so much within three sessions I let the other players do whatever they wanted to him. It was gruesome to say the least... Unfortunately there were a couple of my players that liked him (there always are) and threatened to leave if I didn't allow him to stay. So as a compromise I just suspended him from the group until the campaign was finished. After he came back he seemed like he had stopped being an ass. I decided that I was gonna run a fantasy after that and just make a bunch of premade characters and have them roll for each one, when I made these characters I was up at like 4 a.m and mistakenly made a character that was ludicrously overpowered. I gave him a minus four on his roll but he still rolled higher than the others. So after that he dropped his guise and started being a total ass again but I couldn't do anything because his char was FUCKING INVINCIBLE!! What made him so good was hi 20 cons and 20 st as well as the lions bane claymoor that I accidently added to his inventory. The claymore is indestructable made of pure silver gives +7 bonus and an added +15 damage after the armor is pierced. so that's what I get for programming everything into the char generator on my computer. I had meant to put that item at the bottom of a 99 level dungeon guarded by three dragons and the vengeful spirit of its previous owner. It was like handing a button to a 3 year old, that when pressed nuked everything in the immediate area.
