Do dreams mean anything?

Ancient cultures put a particular emphasis on dreams. The visions we saw when we were asleep were treated with both fear and respect. Many believed that dreams told of what was, is, or will be. But I always wondered what my dreams meant. Usually, they are basically re runs of my usual day at work with some weird elements thrown in occasionaly. Do dreams mean anything, or are they just disjointed images free of rhyme and reason?

They say they're highly symbolic, but I don't usually remember my dreams.
Fistfought a sandcastle in one of the few I did remember. It was pretty awesome.

Sometimes they can be an emotion manifesting itself from your sub conscience.

for example, super stressed over a test? Might have a nightmare, might be a nightmare involving school.

I know they do. I also know if you dream about having sex with a woman, if you're a guy, it means you're gay.
Just what I've heard.

It depends what happens in them. If it's really weird then it means you're seriously messed up in the head.

I don't understand what being a mongoose while sitting in my lifeguard chair (yes, i'm a lifeguard) while watching Grunts from Halo and Helghast playing Water Polo in the Navy pool supposed to mean though. They're usually just really weird reiterations of my day at work.

Well, when I dream about girls I know exactly what that means.

Other than that my dreams don't make sense.

A dream is the reassembling of the thoughts swimming around in your head. So they can tell you things, usually about yourself, like if you've been playing a particular game too much.

Depends on the dream and the person I guess.

Sometimes it does, which is why you have all these books trying to tell you what your dream means. xD

Othertimes it means nothing at all, it's just some random pictures in your head that played during the night. :p

I believe that dreams have the significance you attribute to them. I've had a dream where I was searching through my tarot deck and all the cards were blank except for the Two of Cups. While this is massively significant in symbolism(Meaning a new relationship or the blossoming of love, generally), it was most likely a subconcious manifestation of my sexual frustrations, at the time.

I have, recently, had a dream where I kicked the shit out of a bunch of vampires, which really doesn't have any significance.

Deciding to give something weight does so.

Well...and I know this sounds crazy, I once read that your dreams are "visions" of your life in alternate dimensions. Crazy, I know. If that's true then I've apparently been through a Zombie apocalypse, alien invasion and government oppression. Still, if it's true it would be pretty cool.

Short answer: No.

Long answer: Dreams are what happens when you enter the rapid eye movement phase of the sleep cycle where, according to wikipedia, is kind of like being awake while still asleep. Meaning you're brain is dealing with sensory depravation, you know hallucinations.

Third answer: Sure, why not?

No - and I struggle with the idea that your brain turns everything into a huge fucked-up metaphor just to say you're feeling a bit upset.

So apparently, i am an anthromorphic mongoose lifeguard which makes sure that Helghast and Grunts don't murder each other during a water polo game in a paralell world. And in another dimension I'm the manefestation of all evil. And in this world, I'm a 19 year old lifeguard which works at a navy pool.
