The real victims of war are the animals. I mean, they're all just grazing along and ohgod i can't keep a straight face. OK. War is hell, doesn't matter who you are.

Also, get a hotel if you want to have sausage eating contest.

At the end of the day, as others have said, Woman aren't the primary victims, the primary victims are the people who die in these wars.

But her quote could easily be reworded to

"Men have always been the primary victims of war. Men lose their wives, their fathers, their sons in combat"

Frankly, this is a silly arguement over a quote that may or may not be taken out of context.

We can all agree, that the primary victims are all of the civilians cuaght in the middle of a war, regardless of age, sex or creed.

i have no idea who said this, but it summarizes my feelings for war. "there are no people who are not harmed by the tragedies of war. No matter who you are you will either lose someone you love, witness horrors, live in perpetual fear, be forced to abandon you childhood and become a man, and do unspeakable acts. to say anyone goes through war without being hurt is like saying you can go through life without dying, it just happens."

And that isn't so bad. The quote at least. Yeah she'd kind of saying things we already know, but it's not as bad as the OP is making it out to be.
It's rather awful snipping.

The statement was from a speech on domestic violence. She was trying to compare the suffering and fear experienced by the peoples of El Salvador to the suffering and fear domestic violence victims live with daily.[footnote]http://clinton3.nara.gov/WH/EOP/First_Lady/html/generalspeeches/1998/19981117.html[/footnote]

This whole thread is ridiculous, a quick Google search shows that this thread was ripped horribly out of context.

I Think this is a load of crap. I mean sure, it would be bad to lose a family member but it would be a whole lot worse to die in combat. I believe the true "Victims" of war are the civilians that die when they have no part in the war. What are your opinions on this quote?
Yep agree its a load of crap. Their if anything the secondary victims.
I think she just said it to win over mums who are a large part of her vote i guess.

What the hell? That's stupid to say (the quote I mean). First off it's best to specify which kind of wars we're talking about, if its the current type i.e. fight in a faraway land, then no women are SO not the primary victims, if victims at all. Secondly she's assuming all women had Husbands and if they don't they need husbands, or maybe I'm twisting her words but why are husbands the reason women suffer? Lastly Ok c'mon, in a war the civilians always tend to be the least effected, not nearly as much as the military. I mean look at current wars, we haven't felt any effect of any of the wars the Western world has gone into (i.e. there's no cost or anything reminding you to the state of war, no rations no bombings etc.) you could argue the debt but defensive spending has not brought it to that and other departments are to blame, like healthcare, you could argue economy but again other factors are also to blame i.e. Federal Reserve.

UK, huh? Yeah, you guys would think all patriotism is misguided. Suck a dick. I didn't go on tour twice for no good reason.
How about you go suck a dick just cause one guy phrased his opinion in a hurtful(to you) way doesn't mean you can take the piss out of a whole country.
How about two wrongs don't make a right? Just chill, people. :(

There are no such things as "victims", anymore. No, no, the USA made sure of that after they dropped the nuke on Japan TWICE, and killed hundreds of thousands of people without a second thought. Hundreds of thousands of innocent civillians who had no part in the war, killed without mercy. The end of World War II marked the end of the era where killing civillians was unacceptable.

Like said before, I doubt that this isn't being taken out of context. I don't really care for her, but she isn't stupid. Everyone loses in war. It is tragic when any of us loses a loved one, especially to war or other line of duty deaths.
Well said. Arguing over who is suffering *more* is impossible to properly measure. The measure of suffering is going to be tainted by the subjective, never allowing it to be objective.

Total war has existed for a long time throughout human history, even if Sherman "started it." Civilians often faced wholesale slaughter in warfare, as far back as ancient times. The Carthenigians didn't get a "pass" from the Romans.

What in the Hell is that even supposed to mean? Xneophobe much?

And I'm really sorry to break this to you. But you did.

Some wars are unavoidable. Iraq was not(assuming your tours were Iraq, Afghanistan etc.). And believe it or not, the middle East didn't start it.

Sidenote, I'm not the guy you quoted.
(In the specific case of Afghanistan) Indeed, the middle east didn't start it, Al Qaeda did. Therefore, we are fighting Al Qaeda and the people who support/shelter/train them. Besides (again, specifically Afghanistan) this stopped being just a simple matter of retribution or justice or whatever the hell you want to call it for 9/11 a long time ago. Now it's also about fighting so that in the future little girls will be safe enough to go to school in their own country, or make their own choices about their own lives without the fear of being persecuted and killed by a bunch of maniac zealots.

I'm not naive, I know all wars, no matter how just the cause is for them, are a messy business, but can you really say that the example I've just given is 'no good reason'.

(I'm not the guy you quoted either)

No. No I do not agree with it. However, if a bunch of idiots can run around with flags that say "god hates fags", than I fail to see why she can't say stupid things as well.

That's like saying the victims of the Titanic were the people in the lifeboats.

I'd say the people who got it the worst were the people the war is being fought over.

Like the Civil War would be the slaves, WW2 would be the Jews. They suffered longer than anyone who fought in the war.

So when my country's territory was invaded by the Argentinians 30 years ago against the will of all the citizens who lived there, we had no case at all to stop them? Especially when they started brutally oppressing said innocent civilians for not conforming to the new regime?
