Do you bother with Badges?

Badges, the four little pictures found under everyones avatar, were first introduced back in August 2008 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.67760#608450] and have been a integral part of the Escapist experience. Almost everything is linked with Badges, contests, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.87333#1313285] demographic surveys, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.80577#1055167] film festivals, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/contests/register/filmfest_2008] ponies, [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.105673#1707074] slogans [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/6.79722#1022610] and even our own posting guidelines [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.116826] involve badges in some shape or form. Anything and everything you could possibly do here on the Escapist is in some way linked to these badges, there is no getting away from them no matter how hard you try.

But do you care about them? Are they important to you and your time here on the Escapist. Do you consider them something worth striving toward, something that actually matters and represents impressive achievements or do you consider them as something to pretty up your information box? Do you even care about badges at all? Are you more inclined to take part in something if the reward is a pretty badge? Do you find yourself trying to be a better poster for badges? Is there any specific arrangement to your badges? Do you respect those with impressive badges or just not care?

There are millions of questions I could ask regarding those little squares under your name but if I were we would be here all night so let's just keep the discussion general.

Personally, I don't care much for badges. I actually have badges disabled so I can't see them although I think mine are still visible for everyone else, I'm not sure. In my opinion badges block up the screen too much and distract from the post. Back when Genre Wars was big I tried turning them on again, everyone had four hideous Genre War badges under their name, it stopped me from even bothering to keep them on. It's odd though, back when I had badges enabled I found myself looking at them first. I figured that wasn't a healthy posting habit and turned them off? Does anyone else feel the same way?

As it is I can't be bothered working toward getting some badges. I've actually got a specific layout to my badges so that they tell a little story, if nothing else. That doesn't mean I don't take part in something that has a badge as a reward, just that I don't go out of my way for that badge.

So Escapist, what are your thoughts on these things we call badges? Centre of your life, nothing to you or are they somewhere in the middle. Tell us your thoughts.

Also: Can I get a badge for saying badge so much? Seems only fair.

I don't see why anyone would care.
It's sort of like achievements. If they don't give me anything, I don't see why I should bother.

By all means it is nice to recieve a little indicator that what I'm doing is being recognised somewhere but I don't go out and make a point of getting them or make a big deal out of them (by the way guys, check out my badges while you're at it, they're sooooo cool!).

It's been almost a year since I first turned badges off. Just easier that way. They're arbitrary congratulations. I don't bother with them in short.

I find it interesting that any successful thread gets slung with accusations of being badgewhoring, even if the original intent was nothing such. It happened with FAQ You, with my Artist thread, no doubt with the Holiday council and such though I've not read enough of those to find out.

Not really, in my earlier days I did try. I was quite proud though, that pre-Genre Wars, I was in the top ten with most badges (29), and basically places 5-9 had (30). I was proud in a sad pathetic sort of way.

in all honesty I do mumble a small uncontrollable "...yay!" whenever I get one... it makes me feel like I'm a good Escapist :p

People seem to go through stages, though the time each one takes is relative. First there's the "Huh? Badges?" then there's the "MUST HAS!!!", then "Argh badges." and finally "Eh."

Seeing as I hovered for like three months before joining, I went straight to "Eh".
Yeah. I'm just cool like that.

The only badge i really cared about was the DDKR one. I only arranged them so I don't have the Genre Wars up front.

I don't really care about them, kinda like a shiny penny on the sidewalk, like achievments.

I don't actively try to get them, but if i get them once in a while, it's a pretty delightful pick-me-up.

Hmmm, I think you're right. Comparing this thread with this thread [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.67760#608450] you can see a dramatic change. People used to get pretty worked up over badges and now it appears that no one cares. Oh well.

Although there should be a "Hey badges are pretty neat" step before "MUST HAS!!!", only so we can make Kübler-Ross [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Stages_of_Grief] proud.

Don't care about them that much, but I was pleased to see that I got the 'Regular' and 'Forum Vagabond' badges within two days of each other and without knowing how the hell I got them.

So shiny...

Getting a hard badge is fufilling for a few seconds. They're almost drugs. Once you get your first hit, all you want is your second. Then your third, fourth and so on.
