Do you bother with Badges?

Aren't badges just the achievement system of the Escapist forums? They won't make me go out of my way to achieve them, but I will admit that I do smile whenever I get a message saying that I unlocked something else, regardless of how arbitrary or useless it is.

I thought it was a message from the Escapist saying: "You're a good little poster. Keep it up!".
So they are like dog biscuits, used to condition us to a proper behaviour. Be nice and you´ll get a delicious(ly shiny) reward. I knew there was some hidden motive behind those shinies. Soon The Escapist has a well-trained army of dedicated users ready to be unleashed upon the internet.

If it's something small like "Face With A Name" then I don't really care much. It's really the hard badges (A community member can achieve) I'm aiming for currently, stuff like "Long Time Listener, First Time Caller" and Neo. Those ones I do actually care about.

Oh, and I no longer care at all for the Genre Wars badges. There's just far too many of them and I don't care much about Genre Wars anymore, so I've put them all at the bottom of my badge collection, along with the Webby badge. I don't think of that one as much of an achievement, as everyone who was around then got it.

I make sure they (for as much as possible) show things *I* have completed, not the site (Webby 2009 badge anyway?). *If* you're going to have e-peen contests you might as well do it right.

Aside from that, I can't really be arsed with them, I mostly ignore them.

i don't even know what DDKR is, let alone why it should be an exception.

if you indeed stopped caring about badges, then you'd have picked any common badges before turning them off. turning them off while having the best yourself is not only hypocritical, but also extremely arrogant. either this "DDKR" is the equivalent of a royal pardon, or you're being the most judgmental person on these forums.
You're missing the point. When one stops caring about their outward appearance they don't check to see they're not wearing Prada, they don't care any more.

DDKR is the Dance Dance Kitten Revolution. To understand this, go forth and watch the credits of Escapist Shows. The last.. oh, half a dozen? Blame George Palmer really, in his endless defiance of the Pony.

I was fine with them, never actively sought them out or anything. Then came Genre Wars and those hideous things that to me looked like bastardizations of the old badges. I like getting badges randomly, but they have little to no value on the worth of anyone's posts to me.

if they stopped caring, then they'd not shell out the extra money prada or equivalent would cost. besides, clothes change daily - badges don't. a military general wouldn't wear all his medals daily either, whether he cared about them or not.

i don't need further information than provided. DDKR is not the equivalent of a royal pardon. either way you still care enough for this one badge to have it.

so far you've only proven what i stated in my previous post: that you care about badges, and that you're arrogant for turning them off while having the best yourself. maybe i shouldn't have expected less for someone who think they are at the pinnacle of this community. sigh.

Let's try to not make this too personal, m'kay.

A new question: Do you have badges on? Why do you? Is it to decorate the side of the forum or is it to see other peoples achievments? Are you just too lazy to turn them off?

what makes you think you are the police of these forums? our entire discussion has been personal, just leave it as it is. nobody asked you to butt in.

Kinda pointless, but if I could chose 4 custom badges the 1st would be a desert eagle, 2nd sunglasses, 3rd Sabre(the car), and 4th I would probaly keep the beer.

I take the posting guidelines to heart:

Badges. Relax, you'll get some. Keep a lookout for contests, events, and other fun things that we put together all the time, and you'll have plenty of chances for some of the more rare badges!

I cared at first but now I have more than enough. I like the ones you get for winning competitions so you can show everyone else how awesome you are. Also, the holiday ones are cool although essentially pointless.

I really don't care about the badges, they are in a way achievements and I don't strive to collect them ie. badgewhoring isn't my thing. It's not why I came here to register to the Escapist forums. I came here because the forums here have some quite interesting threads every now and then. Also, some you people here are quite amusing.

Although, I would like atleast one more badge, so I had four under my avatar, it annoys me when there's an emptly place there...

I find it interesting that any successful thread gets slung with accusations of being badgewhoring, even if the original intent was nothing such. It happened with FAQ You,
That's exactly what I thought about FAQ You. Needless to say it worked, even if that wasn't the intention.

I have badges on, but I don't care that much about them.

I already got all the good ones, so the novelty's died.

Eh, They're alright, I don't go out and out to get them but if I see that I've been awarded one I can't help but smile.

When I had less than four it bothered me, because it made me look like such a "n00b". But now that I have four, I don't think about them anymore. Except I make sure to be on my best behaviour since I want to have a Neo badge one day.
