Not really.

I appreciate it when it's there, but it isn't a prerequisite. My housemate seems to think that's all that matters in a game, but time and again he has finished games and said they were crap.

The graphics could look PS2-esque, but have the most captivating story in video game history and great gameplay, and that would be a good thing. Making a game that plays like Sonic and the Black Knight and has a story comparable to 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand look like Crysis, will be like sprinkling glitter on dog shit.

Don't get me wrong though, an actual prerequisite of great game design is making an effort in all areas of the game, obviously graphics included, because presentation is important.

I think really it should be a question of do you care about photo-realistic graphics? I assume that's what people think of when this is brought up, as artistic graphics don't seem to come into the equation.

They help build the atmosphere, but I prefer originality, story, and gameplay
That, it can look like crap, but If I find one single plot-hole I'm snapping the disc.
They'll just say a wizard did it if there's a plot hole
Bastards >.< ...wait doesn't that just make it a plot twist?!?

Graphics do matter. Sometimes they matter more than others.

A good game can be made better with better, or more fitting graphics.

A bad game cannot be saved no matter how pretty it is.

Dwarf Fortress is one of the greatest games ever.

Let me put it this way: graphics are not the end-all-be-all, but they certainly can't be ignored. I can take a game that has some less then stellar graphics, as long as i know what I'm looking at and don't get confused by blurriness.

The problem here is that I can't adjust for when the game was released. I had trouble playing Ocarina of Time, which I played last year via emulator, because the graphics were about ten years older than what i was used to.

Now don't get me wrong the game was pretty fun (amazingly Navi didn't bother me too much), but I found it to be kinda difficult because it was hard to see details. This is why Im reluctant to play old games (that and there is a good chance I won't have a system that can play it).

So I will say that graphics are relevant, If not as important as gameplay and story.

Everyone enjoys better graphics, although the amount of graphics needed to please the individual in question varies, my best guess is that it has to do with when one got into gaming, for example, myself getting started on the Commodore 64/NES, i dont really care all that much about graphics, cause i'm old enough to still remember the day when 3d in gaming blew ones mind, first time i played Ocarina of Time on my N64 it was amazing, it was like a whole new world of fun adventures.

Nowadays though with the people getting into gaming this "late", they begin with graphics connected to the last and next gen, which is a very high standard compared to back in the day, therefore graphics are much more of something that is taken for granted and just has to be there, unlike with retro gaming when good graphics was more of a treat one would get every now and then.

Just brought Half Life and CnC: Tiberian Sun for a £1 each. Graphics are shocking considering I spent all of the last 2 weeks playing Killzone 2, but I overlook it for gameplay.

Definately 'no'... Some of the best games in my mind are still the Monkey Island series and Psychonauts. Monkey Island because... It's MONKEY ISLAND! and Psychonauts have some of the highest amounts of gameplay and variety that I have ever seen in a game.

Some games will ultimately need good graphics to up the total value of the package and to keep up with the competition. But I'd rather play a good game over a pwetty game. If a new Monkey Island hit the streets, looking EXACTLY like Monkey Island 2, I would buy it no doubt!

I didn't care before I got a XBox 360, but now they're sort of a requirement for me, which is unfortunate.. I just can't appreciate some games the same as I used to.

For me, good graphics are like those little mints you get after dinner at nice restaurants: You don't go for the mint, you go for the food, the mint is just something nice that doesn't impact your overall dining experience greatly.

That said, I've seen bad graphics I liked more then good, no more heros and killer7 are good examples, all cell shaded, but I liked that. On the opposite end, MGS4, The graphics are PHENOMENAL! And that does improve immersiveness.... maybe I'm just a hideo fanboy...............

Well.. yeah. Who doesn't?

Obviously it's not the MOST important thing, but it does make a difference.

I do care. I won't not play a game simply based on the graphics. Story, atmosphere and gameplay are also important. But if a game has really shitty graphics it will take me out of the game a bit.

Graphics are like chocolate icing on cake. If it's a really nice cake then good icing will make it even better and bad icing can be ignored. If dog shit would be preferable to the cake then no amount of icing is going to save it.
