The obvious things that Microsoft use the money for its server maintenance (and yes, security updates can be paid for too) plus the addition of Netflix and other media streaming stuff that very few people use (still, it's there). One thing may of us LIVE users noticed with the new dashboard update (apart from it looking a bit stupid) was that downloads were fiercely faster, perhaps to keep up to speed with N protocol wireless or just to improve the experience for all of us. My point is that in the long term, it makes LIVE a better experience for us which I am more than happy to pay around $80AU every 12 months
Go Microsoft, charging people to use services that uses another companies bandwidth.

Then by that logic, you should be able to complain about every company that that charges money to use services that eat their bandwidth. Like downloading games from Steam. Still the same concept.

Kinect? Always seemed a big risk for me, and some good stuff is coming from the tech.
The thing is, that Microsoft would have never ever done Kinect, if Nintendo hadn't started the whole motion control thing.
The thing is the Kinect is a copy of the eye toy from the PS2, and also on PS3, so there was no innovation there other than marketing lies about it being new :p

Hate them as any big corporation, they are a corporate behemoth and will stomp on anyone who doesn't have the money to go against them(very few do).

Their engineers do good work but the image of that is overshadowed by the money/power hunger, just like with any big corporation.

Nope i'm gonna have to say i love Microsoft....i get everything free from them except Office, gotta love msdn academy alliance, they save me so much on OS's (xp, vista, 7, the server editions, etc.) and all my programming software which i need (visual studio 05, 08, 10, thats including multiple version of the same ones), 100% discount rules! :p. Even though i had 2 360's fail i never had a problem (1 was straight swapped, the other repaired), i'd much rather be with Microsoft then Apple anyway.

No it isn't. When I buy and subsequently download a game from Steam I'm using Steam's bandwidth to do so. For it to be the same thing, I would have to pay Microsoft $60 per year to download from Steam. The only things that cost Microsoft money on Xbox live, are servers in first party games, e.g. Halo, Gears, and the store.

I own a Windows PC (no consoles). I'm also a software developer (recently turned web developer). I like to think of myself as reasonably objective when it comes to MS software.

Windows is fine. Microsoft seem to have no problem stealing other people's good ideas, and that's great for me as a consumer because they tend to only take the best ones. Home versions of Windows have gotten progressively better over the years, evolving from the steaming pile of horse manure that was Windows 95/98 into the really quite usable, stable, and secure Windows 7. I'm very happy with Windows 7.

Speaking as a web developer, I can't see what the big problem is with IE. At least not with IE9. I see a lot of this sort of thing on the web:
"Feature X is supported by all the major browsers except IE, therefore IE is crap."
Fair enough, but then I also see this:
"Feature X is only supported by IE, therefore IE is crap."
Umm, come again?
Personally I find that some things work better in IE and other things don't. Overall, Google Chrome is my favourite browser (speaking both as a developer and as a user) but IE9 comes second, and Firefox is waaaaay down the list.

MS Office has been variable over the years, but never great. It amazes me how MS Word manages to turn the simplest task (writing a letter) into an exercise in smashing one's head against the keyboard. Excel, on the other hand, is excellent. You can (and many small businesses do) use Excel sheets for all kinds of things that would normally require a bespoke development, which I think says a lot for Excel. It's powerful, versatile, and reliable. And these days it's pretty quick too.

In summary, I think Microsoft do pretty decent work. And I should hope so, because if they really are rubbish then their dominance is proof that a free market economy isn't so great as most Americans seem to think.

Kinect was being called project natal before the wii was announced.
Project natal was announced in 2009 whereas Wii has been available on retail since 2006
Get your facts right.
I edited my post earlier.
Earlier but later than my post.
Even though your post still doesn't makes sense.

Well, I don't hate Microsoft. I just dislike the Xbox for personal reasons. Now, I'm not very internet savvy so if anything, I would say I hate IE with a burning passion but, hey, I don't even know if this falls directly into the Microsoft category.

But I will try to list why I don't like the Xbox and, again, these are personal reasons. They're not meant to be overwhelmingly convincing reasons or meant to start a riot:

-Paying for online gaming. Say whatever you want about PSN and the hackers, you can still play for free. That is, assuming the servers go back up one of these days. No, I'm not that worried about my personal info being compromised; I got that part under control. I'm just waiting for Sony to fix his boo boo.
-Exclusive games. Xbox has a couple of exclusive games I'd like to play at least once: Left 4 Dead, Fable, Gears of War and Halo. Other than that, I can't think of any other good or interesting games. Sorry but I'm not buying a Xbox just for a handful of 'good' games. heck, I think the Wii has better exclusive games to offer.
-The controller. I don't know, it just feels weird. And I guess the controllers/button configuration/arrangement also feels iffy to me.
-Overwhelming user interface. Again, I don't know if its just me not being used to it but I've seen my games play with their Xbox. They go through so many screens, buttons, commands, button smashing and whatnot just to play a couple of songs or a game...sorry, my attention span is not that good.
-Too much green everywhere! We get it, Xbox! Green is your thing!
-That perfect circle you get on the disk if you move the Xbox 1 inch in any direction.
-Kinect. I don't know; if I'm gonna make a fool of myself, I would prefer to be holding a controller of some kind to have an alibi in case someone walks in and sees me.

Again, personal reasons.

OT: Microsoft is a good company. Not the best company, but a good company, and where would we be without them?

I'm a PS3 player, so as far as the xbox is concerned, I'm neutral to it.

But in terms of PCs, I prefer MC to Apple.

You have some valid points there, especially the online, but most of them seem to stem from you being habituated to the PS3. For instance, the controller and the UI. They're both very intuitive and easy to use once you get used to them. I find the PS3 controller to be uncomfortable and strange, but that's only because I never use them and I'm used to the xbox one.
Just keep an open mind is all.

My hate towards Microsoft is less because they are to gaming hardware what Activision is to game development and more because they have produced some truly fantastic products and failed to support them to the point where they cannot possibly succeed. I'm fucking sick of Apple (or whoever) to flooding the market with these terrible (comparatively at least) products....Not only do they neglect their brilliant products, they try to force their fuckups on us (xp, GFWL etc) or, worse still, they'll have a good product (the example I'm running with is vista) that's great for a specific purpose (heavy 64 bit simulations and very high end computing) and they'll try to sell it as a good system for private use.....It's like they straight up don't know anything about their products :\

Note that I've deliberately not mentioned Microsoft office...I can't describe my feelings as to how Microsoft handle the software and customer with regard to ms office in any civil manner.

I'm not an outrageous fan of Microsoft, but I do quite enjoy their products. Always been a Windows user and I certainly appreciate the Xbox even though I own a PS3 instead.

Honestly, I just try to vary my experiences with technology so it never gets stale. My newest venture is the Android operating system and I LOOOOOVE IT.

How would Microsoft be able to have and maintain dedicated servers for all multiplayer games on LIVE? How would any company do that? Even with the money they rake in from Gold subscriptions they wouldn't be able to hold up that many servers. And what a waste it would be too. Hosting a game on LIVE consumes approximately 10MB/hour and about half that for those who join. It's just an accepted fact people know when using LIVE. With such huge internet plans you can get nowadays, who on this planet would give a shit?

And allowing players to play multilayer on other players' hosts isn't the only thing you pay for anyway.

I hate the high prices you need to pay to keep your PC up to date with current technologies (any version of Windows 7 is 100+ euro,s and that,s just the system builders version) and that they bog it down with all kind,s of program,s you don,t need (like a Telex service program)
also their office program costs allot of money (even though Open Office which is free can read more file types)
PS
it,s also a ***** when you want to personalize stuff like the logon screen and bootup animation

I like how Bill Gates can donate billions of dollars to charity. Saving hundreds of thousands of people from starvation and disease and people still compare him to Adolf Hitler because they don't care for the software he developed that is optional to use in the first place.

Hate them. Hate them to death. Mainly because of their PC gaming support, or rather their lack thereof. Games for Windows Live is a piece of shit, and because of the Live software that comes on Microsoft-published PC discs... well, none of them actually work on my computer. I can run the Steam copy of Fallout 3, but I can't run the disc that I bought. I'll repeat that. The digital copy works, but the tangible, physical disc that one would hope would last beyond download services is a worthless piece of plastic right out of the box.

Yeah, thanks Microsoft...
