I always seem to start a shitstorm, so no they are not insignificant.
Hey there is no such thing as bad publicity. Creating a shitstorm is getting your name/face out there . You'll be known as "That Guy" ( kinda like eternal nothingness on this forum lol)

OT: i tend to get quoted a lot , because i usually say something incredibly smart or incredibly stupide , most of the time incredibly stupide . But hey if i can be reconized for whatever reason i'm happy!

I usually don't post on anything past three pages , and usually only read the first two . Unless i quote someone like right now .

I quite enjoy the forums and I know that people do occasionally read what I say.

And of course, whenever I feel bad about the amount I'm being quoted I just go and find a piracy or gun control thread and post either against piracy or pro-gun control, and immediately I get about forty responses that I don't bother to read. Not that I'm trolling, I usually do believe what I post (maybe not as strongly as I make it sound...) but no one said I have to actually pay attention the drunken hate speech that gets slurred at me in response.

EDIT: Oh, and since I set Basil there as my avatar I've started to attract a lot more 'your avatat is Basil! That is so cool.'

Well it's true that gamers aren't the most sophisticated folks around, no less the fact that they can't tell a tightly woven plot with refined game mechanics from immersion wandering around oh look a dragon. Or the fact that they can ignore the fact that the rpg elements in that certain pretty much every game now was only put in to exploit the reinforcement theory on skinner box to compensate for a lackluster story/gameplay. Not to mention that there are those further devolve into petulant childs when at the slightest hint of losing or when at an overwhelming advantage...

I think that we have established that your posts are only significant if you wholeheartedly agree with the majority, or if you stand at opposite ends with "everyone else". Like highschool, don't expect anyone to say anything interesting or noteworthy if they do respond to your posts. It's what I do.

Depends. I find most people will read a page, maybe two, before replying. So unless you're on the first couple pages, your post is likely to be missed entirely by 80% of the people. I'll still throw out replies like this anyway, but usually the only time I post a bunch on any given topic is that I'm getting quoted/quoting (aka arguing lol)

Welcome to the Internet ! Just do your job and pay no attention to outcome. Everything's gonna be fine.

They may not answer you, but that doesn't mean they don't read you, isn't it ? :)

They are not insignificant. Because everything you've ever posted on the internet is basically solidifying your immortality.

Everything you post will be on the internet forever. And if it is deleted, it is never truly deleted. It will be in an archive, it will be in a string of data, it can be anywhere, anytime, all at once.

Anybody on the planet (Except for North Korea) can see what you have written, you can expand your message out to potentially billions of people, you can inspire a range of emotions with just a few words, and bring down regimes with a single point of view put across in a post.

Just remember, Justin Bieber started out just singing cover songs once a month on youtube. And now his videos are the most watched on youtube, and he has become the most hated human child to ever walk the face of the Earth. That level of influence is not bad for just a few posts.

I rarely post. I don't take any issue with the Escapist as a forum, I just find forums in general are full of people who aren't listening but just waiting for their turn to speak.

I agree, sometimes I feel like the only person who reads my post are the mods who make sure that I don't use one word answers. However I post anyway weather I think people read it or not.

Sometimes I get quoted and am pleasantly surprised that not only did someone read my post but they either agree vehemently or found fault with it.

...and I find this to be very off-putting, generally, which is one of the biggest reasons why I avoid posting on all but the most mundane of topics. Like this one.
Another reason I forgot to list was that I tend to find "internet discusion" has pretty much become synonymous with arguement.
And I find conflict to be counter-productive.
Exactly. I see way too many people venting their frustrations here by flinging petty insults at people who don't share their exact opinions on everything.

Never, I always feel like my posts have significance no matter what I say. This is mostly due to my massive ego but I usually only post when I have something that is halfway decent to post anyway :p

I always find my posts go unread, and my threads get sucked down to the bottom in a matter of seconds. I've all but given up creating & I only comment on less-than 5 pagers, rarely checking for replies as thy just never come.

Sometimes I've even dished out essays ... wasted time. For fuck sake.

My posts are insignificant, because I'm usually expressing my opinions, on an internet forum where kids and young adults don't much care for my side of things. So in the grand scheme of things, it's a waste of my time--but occasionally when I feel the need to vent, but not burden anyone with my troubles, it's useful for me to write up nonsensical posts, and try valiantly to ignore the morons with dictionaries who immediately quote me and defend their...whatever.

I occasionally like to say I'm a troll--but that's only because I'm trying to reach the pinnacle of success on these forums.

So are my posts insignificant? Well aside from being one of those rare bodybuilders who goes onto internet forums aside from BB.com or EliteFitness, and plays video games, thereby resulting in my standing as an extraordinarily unique demographic--yeah, I'd say my posts are. Whoop whoop and all that jazz.

Most of my posts are the result of travelling while my only companion is my phone, or just plain old work boredom. Plenty to read and post about here to kill time.

Yeah, I assume people will hate me for whatever I put, however I phrase it.

A bit. But what can you do when you aren't a notable human being with nothing interesting to add to a conversation that someone hasn't already said and probably said it better? Nothing really, but post some stuff anyway. That's how I feel about my stuff.

I seem to blend in well enough. There are a few topics I have strong opinions about but I don't feel like voicing those every time one of those threads pops up.

On most other topics I either don't care enough to put effort in or I'm not controversial enough to be noticed. :p

I did float the ideas of some re-forms a little while ago, but no-one was interested.

Stuff like being able to up-mark posts and then go into a thread with six pages and be able to read the most up-marked posts first. Then if someone has already posted the same thing I would say in the thread, I can just up-mark the post rather than have to put a post saying I agree with the comment.

Also something to make quote notifications better, as in you add a quote in at any time other than when you first post a post, the person you are quoting does not get notified. Also it is nigh on impossible to search for where your user name has been quoted. Also if you are part of a quote thread, you don't get notified, i.e someone quoted you and then their response to you comment also gets quote by someone else with something to say about that response to your original comment, you don't know about it.

Anyway no-one was interested, so the forums remain as they are. Also posting polls seems a bit screwed and unreliable at the moment.

Escapist is one of the most generic forums on the net. Of course it doesn't matter because within a few weeks the same ridiculous threads will be repeated (would you do X if Y happened, what would you do in X situation, you have X amount of time left choose Y from this list, what is your favourite X etc etc.)
Also a whole lot about Zombie apocalypse. The last weapon you used in a game will now X. It gets old.

I just post what I think. I don't do it for anyone else.

It's nice to have somewhere to discuss things. I was thinking recently about going to find a forum to discuss the new 52 DC comics I have been reading.

Sometimes a thread will start to repeat itself. That's usually when I bail on it. As it's too long for people to read through to see what arguments have been made, countered, disproved already. It's not really constructive to continue them.
