almost every other developer ports their biggest games from console to PC but when one notable developer continues to do it the other way around people wonder if that developer "hates" consoles?

makes me giggle a bit.

No, you've got it the wrong way round. The console manufacturers hate Valve.
Indeed, because they don't want to charge a fortune for the updates like XBox live wants them too (I don't know about the PS3 network).

However, for XBox 360 at least they've finally managed to convince Microsoft to let the consolers have it for free. I don't know about any matchmaker service, as you can still get the server lists on PC if you de-select the option.

To be honest, people always say that, and I have to think to myself "Huh?". Ok, its not as good as Killzone 2 or Crysis, but its far from "obsolete", to me at least.
I'm not calling the graphics bad, I'm saying they made the graphics with the design for a close up look at a high-res computer monitor, rather than a tv. There's no shame in it in itself, but they barely bother to change the look to compensate a television. It's not impossible. Fallout and Oblivion had pretty great graphics all around.

Besides, the TF2 updates are reportedly coming soon to consoles.
You mean the same way they were coming last year? I fell for valves trap, they'll release shit console versions, make the game faster on slower machines, then you will be suckered in to buying the PC version.

Well, here's the thing. Microsoft is making Valve charge users for the updates, or DLC. So instead of frequently release class updates each time, they are realeasing several at once so players don't have to keep buying each one.

Ok. I've not played/seen the console version, so I didn't know it didn't look as good on the big screen. Maybe when they release the big update, it'll fix that.

I remember hearing about that a while back, and I'm inclined to think it was BS from valve in order to make more money while blaming microsoft. All 360 games get free updates, and lots of games also have free DLC including big titles like bioshock. While im sure MS wants them to charge so they get money its the developers who set the prices. I have a hard time believing that valve is the only company MS is forcing to charge for dlc

look at the updates for TF2 on xbox compared to that of its pc counterpart...
It's an issue with Microsoft. Valve WANT to give the updates, but Microsoft won't allow them. That and they hate PS3. Gabe even said so :p
This answer is the most consistent with what I've heard thus far. Microsoft's tight control over it's digital marketplace limits what developers can do in terms of giving away downloadable content.

Sony's platform, on the other hand, is difficult to program for and is understandably not going to be favored by all developers.

The PC is an open platform and thus has given Valve the most room to flourish.

So, no. Valve Doesn't hate consoles. They, however, encountered more obstacles on those platforms, which has had an impact on their games and the way they support them.

QFT

There is always some thing lost in the translation from PC to console or the other way arround. I think valve focused on the PC then uses the console for a quick buck much the same way Bungie focused on the xbox then used the PC to make a quick buck. Don't feel too bad a major game developer is treating you like a seccond class customer, PC gamers have had to put up with it for a while now.

I say leave Valve alone...PC gamers have to be constantly wary of bad PC ports of console games. Valve's console ports are not as good as the PC versions but I would not say they are bad, or that they 'hate' consoles.

With their history and the fact that their Steam service is doing pretty damn well, I would say those are the main reasons. Like others say, they are also patching their games on PC all the time, and also putting in content updates for TF2.

I like to believe that things went like this:

EA:Hey dude do you want to release your games for the consoles?
Gabe: No! I hate consoles in matter of fact I was beating a PS3 with a crowbar right now! Also its to boring and expensive to port our games to the consoles.
EA:What about if we do the porting? That way you dont have any work to do and get some money!
Gabe: Okay you gotta a deal! But remenber they dont get no patches or DLC!! kk?
EA:Kk.

(Yeah second time I posted this.)

Hmm whichever is the slowest and most painful way.

Although I'll probably end up having to shoot it. If only it had balls to shoot. Drat!

Actually, you're wrong. L4D on the 360 is getting the two additional campaigns for free, just like the PC.

And interesting that you say all 360 games get free updates when Valve have not bothered to release any updates TF2 on the 360. All the glitches in the game are still there, sky walking and getting under the maps etc. They haven't even bothered with the subtle class tweaks. Valve can't be fucked fixing the problems with the 360 and PS3 TF2, it isn't a matter of Microsoft stopping them by putting prices on stuff, it's a matter of Valve encouraging users to buy their game twice.

There's alot of things that we're patched in Left 4 Dead PC that weren't patched on the 360. Like hiding in the grates in the finale of no mercy.

I think they've said as much, yes. Doesn't surprise me, the PC really is the ideal platform for any sort of First Person Game.

Valve has openly stated that they like the 360 and greatly dislike working with the PS3 hardware.

But PC will always be their forte.
