Hitchhiker's is one of my favorite series of all times. Only Douglas Adams can write those books properly. Another author would ruin them, I don't care who he is. I'll read it, and I'll probably feel a pain in my heart while doing so. Because it's just not right.

One thing Jim forgot to add : Eoin was ASKED by Mrs. Adams to write it. And I agree with Nil, book 4 was bad and book 5 was ok-ish.

Used to read Artemis Foul when I was younger, loved 'em, not at all badly written.
But HHGTTG is written in such a special style, it's so unique, I doubt someone can keep the legacy going. But then again, not gonna bash it before I've read it.

Artemis Fowl was a great series in its own way. There is no way, however, that Eoin Colfer can write another type of book. I read his "Supernaturalists" and it was good, but nothing close to Arty's greatness. Authors write what they like to write, sometimes what they like to write isn't always what their best at.

I read about this the other day and wasn't as much outraged as vaguely put out. I thought of how the 5th book was slightly sub-par anyway. And then I thought of how glad, in a way, I was that Adam's

I met and spoke with Douglas Adams once at a book signing. At the time the movie was stalled in development hell and I had thought that he might well be suffering from writer's fatigue after about 26 years of rewriting the same material. After failing to write a novel I had decided as a 'warm up' exercise to adapt the original Radio 4 play (on which the books are based) into a coherent < 120 min Hollywood-friendly movie. I was well aware that I was being impertinent and presumptuous to even speak about my screenplay when I met him, but as I explained at the time I would rather embarrass myself than go away not having asked the question - who knows, he might have said he'd take a look at it.
He couldn't have been nicer about not using it. After all the struggles he had had getting the movie made he still wanted to ensure that all the ideas that were in it came from him.
Now apply this to a writer who there is no evidence he has even met...
