I don't know what to think. Should I be happy or sad. (Pulls out hair and cries over spilt milk)

NOOOOOOOOOOO!

Hitchhiker's is one of my favorite series of all times. Only Douglas Adams can write those books properly. Another author would ruin them, I don't care who he is. I'll read it, and I'll probably feel a pain in my heart while doing so. Because it's just not right.

One thing Jim forgot to add : Eoin was ASKED by Mrs. Adams to write it. And I agree with Nil, book 4 was bad and book 5 was ok-ish.

Can't remember much of book 4, but book 5 was not even finished, and went all kinds of loopy... I don't really know if I want a new book in that sort of vein, but the first books were pure, original comedy gold. Perhaps, in order to keep an open mind, I'll take a look at this acknowledging that Eoin is writing it and not expecting more of Adam's genius, just a continuation of those crazy characters' adventures. Then again, AF doesn't do it for me and always seemed too childish and silly in too many ways - or perhaps 2 books isn't enough to form a coherent impression?
What a childrens book being too childish, my my what a turn up for the books!

It was fine how it was, but I know now that it's been confirmed I can't change it by bitching.

I can hold it all in until I've read the new book, I suppose ^^

Used to read Artemis Foul when I was younger, loved 'em, not at all badly written.

But HHGTTG is written in such a special style, it's so unique, I doubt someone can keep the legacy going. But then again, not gonna bash it before I've read it.

oh and (SPOILER ALERT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

How is he going to do it? Looking at what happens in the end of Mostly Harmless? :S

Artemis Fowl was a great series in its own way. There is no way, however, that Eoin Colfer can write another type of book. I read his "Supernaturalists" and it was good, but nothing close to Arty's greatness. Authors write what they like to write, sometimes what they like to write isn't always what their best at.

NO!

Arthur dies in the last book! The whole planet is destroyed! Game over, man! You can't continue on from an ending like that!

I mean, come on!

You forget that there's a possible loophole:

The Babelfish in Arthur's ear has the ability, according to Adams, to teleport its host away from danger- it can sense it coming

I read about this the other day and wasn't as much outraged as vaguely put out. I thought of how the 5th book was slightly sub-par anyway. And then I thought of how glad, in a way, I was that Adam's
killed off ALL the characters
. But now this will be like adding a heap of crap on a delicious literary cake.
Then again I could just not read it and forget about it completely.
*Fingers in ears* la la la la la la la!

The Vogons used the new book to destroy ALL Earths EVERYwhere. And even if the Babelfish could do that, it's just further proof of the non-existence of God. ;)

"My first reaction was semi-outrage that anyone should be allowed to tamper with this incredible series," he said.

"But on reflection I realised that this is a wonderful opportunity to work with characters I have loved since childhood and give them something of my own voice while holding on to the spirit of Douglas Adams."
Basically, he loves the books as much as anyone, but is too much of a whore to just not sell his fanfics.

No... wrong... I can imagine the late Mr Adams turning in his grave...
He wasn't buried. He was cremated.

On topic: I am a huge DNA fan, but deliberately avoided the posthumously published Salmon of Doubt as I felt that I didn't want to read stuff that my favourite author had not felt passed his own stringent 'quality-control filter' whilst he was alive. Publishers often do this with the work of poets - publishing their personal letters, etc. Wrong, wrong, wrong.

I met and spoke with Douglas Adams once at a book signing. At the time the movie was stalled in development hell and I had thought that he might well be suffering from writer's fatigue after about 26 years of rewriting the same material. After failing to write a novel I had decided as a 'warm up' exercise to adapt the original Radio 4 play (on which the books are based) into a coherent < 120 min Hollywood-friendly movie. I was well aware that I was being impertinent and presumptuous to even speak about my screenplay when I met him, but as I explained at the time I would rather embarrass myself than go away not having asked the question - who knows, he might have said he'd take a look at it.

He couldn't have been nicer about not using it. After all the struggles he had had getting the movie made he still wanted to ensure that all the ideas that were in it came from him.

Now apply this to a writer who there is no evidence he has even met...

I won't be buying And another kerching...

To be honest, I don't really like anything after the third book and even that one is a bit off. I don't see this improving on a storyline that was completely derailed halfway in.
