Doesn't id make a ton of money from licensing their tech? I'm sure the license fees are what kept the studio going in between the long release dates for their games. Perhaps now that they have an overlord, they don't have to sell their tech, but it's still odd to stop a very profitable revenue stream.
With Rage looking as good as it does, I'd imagine they would be able to get the same revenue stream from keeping this engine to themselves. Bethesda's gameplay with Id's technology? It sounds like a dream come true.

Doesn't really surprise me, idTech3 was the last engine to see widespread use before everybody just got used to working with Unreal.

And please stop whining about 'selfish' this and 'greedy' that. They run a business and they think it is in their best interest right now. It's their prerogative. If you don't like it, just keep buying Unreal engine games.

Doom 4? Open world? this cannot end well.
Doom 2 (which Doom 4 will be based on) was always intended to give the illusion of walking around in a huge American city. I don't see how actually making it a believable city would be a bad thing.
Because it's set on Mars?

Where do you fit a huge American city?

i would think that there would be plenty of room on the surface of mars to place a giant americian city. thats not to say it would be livable, but you could quite easily get serveral of them on the surface of mars

If they can get rid of the horrible Bethesda animation with this it sounds like it'd be put to great use with Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Id are pretty much know for their tech after all.
Thats not the engine's fault. Bethesda's lead animator pretty much got his job entirely through nepotism.

So expect even higher resolution models and textures made to look like the work of complete amateurs because the lead animator knows fuck all about his job.

Also, hooray! The biggest problem with game design these days is middleware cuts around 80% of the work required to make a game out of making games. Too many people who shouldn't even be employed just copy/pasting code willy-nilly.

Ever since they were bought up by Zenimax, ids been making a lot of dumb decisions, at least in my opinion.

Btw, where is TES V? Daggerfall 1998, Morrowind 2002, Oblivion 2006, but since they haven't announced a new TES, I'm guessing it will be delayed to 2011.

Unless doom guy has voice acting by brian blessed and all his lines taken from the doom comic.

RIP AND TEAR!
Imagining Brian rolling his R's as he destroys the cyberdemon's HUGE GUTS brings me unknowable happiness.

OT: I'd like to see what it looks like, especially when applied to a TES game. There are worse companies that could be holding on to that technology; for all the crap Bethesda's been catching as of late, they're still quite excellent.

Bethesda has been using the Gamebryo engine for a very long time. It might not be the most efficient or popular thing to have the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout games use the Id Tech 5 engine. It will be very interesting to see if Bethesda drops Gamebryo and all of its existing tool support in favor of Id Tech or if they will remain on track.

The trailer for Rage looks like a combo of Boderlands and Fallout 3. As far as TESV goes, i dont care what engine it uses, just give us a conclusive answer as to whether its being made or not.

I think Bethesda's recent games have looked fine, but that's just me. And I don't want any producer to get into the habit of just cranking out games on the same engine - that gets stale quick. So a graphics upgrade sounds good.

I'm not buying the whole 'we're not about licensing' bit though. Corporations are out to make money; it's what they do. I just wonder which angle they're playing with this. Maybe someone else has another competitive engine coming too...

Actually, an open world doom sounds kinda neat. Maybe a few sandbox sections where you can either run around and slaughter demons or go on to the next mission. If it's based on doom 2, then I can't wait. Instead of a text screen telling us that a giant demon is killed and its thrashing limbs destroy hell, we get to watch it happen epicly.

For a pretty glaring example of the lead animator's complete lack of ability, load up oblivion/with-guns, go into third person, walk diagonally.

The bolt upright, completely fixed stare of in 'conversation mode' is also this individual's fault.

Well that seems a little selfish, and unresonable. Talking about denying the market...well, if they want to be like that...fine...just shows how much of a set of jerks they are with sharing tech
How is it selfish? They created it and they want to keep it within their group. A lot of developers who have created their own engines do that.

It's too bad New Vegas is using the Gamebryo engine, so you shouldn't really say "The next Fallout," because the game hasn't been released yet.
