On the one hand, I understand why they chose this path.

On the other hand, I think of the countless use that the Unreal 3 engine got, and I'm sure they could make countless more millions of dollars and we'd have countless more awesome games if everyone had their hands on the technology.

But for a while I guess they can just keep it to themselves. I mean, it is a competitive market.

If they can get rid of the horrible Bethesda animation with this it sounds like it'd be put to great use with Elder Scrolls or Fallout. Id are pretty much know for their tech after all.
Oh please let the next Fallout game after New Vegas use id's new engine...

I remain in a state of priapic anticipation for the open source release of id Tech 4 after Rage and Doom 4 come out. Please don't let Carmack down, ZeniMax.

TES V on this would be phenomenal, and I'm sure once the current crop of id games sell really well thanks to the tech they will eventually shop it around. It already looks fantastic so I can't wait to see what happens with it a few years down the line when people have had the chance to tinker with it (look at how much unreal engine games have improved over the years).

Also the Brian Blessed + DOOM comic as DOOM 4 genuinely made me laugh out loud & I would buy in a heart beat (if you've never experienced the latter here is a dramatic rendition http://doomcomicdrama.ytmnd.com/ ).

Now if Bethesta could just animate their stuff better. :C

OT: That's funny since people are still using the Doom 3 engine, a lot of people are going to be disappointed I think.

So this means it will be a locked game with zero or highly controls and restricted modding? Oh boy..... ALso if they don;t make it middle ware....how in the hell are they going to make money off it? Surely not the test demos they call games.....

id Software is running RAGE at 60hz on consoles. GoW runs at 30hz, even then it lags. Most games will run at 30hz with the exception of racing titles and a select few other titles. It's an impressive feat to say the least, especially considering the visual fidelity that id Software maintains on both console platforms. Then again, it won't run as well as on PC anyways, which is my platform of choice.

I dunno, Rage really doesn't look that great to me. Almost just like a less cartoony borderlands.

They are protecting the crown jewels. :p

Also i don't like ID's textures and color palette looks like plastic.

Assuming the Doom 4 engine doesn't break the average computer, it does look tasty. The scenery looks as close to realistic as anything I've seen since the Source engine, but I'm not sold on the character models. We spend all this time making the world look real, but we can never seem to nail down realistic people.

For those of you who are worried about the animations in RAGE, just check this out. It's one of the few videos that contains any extensive in-game footage.

Now this is for RAGE, and not any of the subsequent Bethesda made titles which is so infamous for shit animation, but heck, the id Tech 5 engine is more than capable of dealing with very detailed animations.

In RAGE the enemies will cradle their injured arm and such, which is sweet.

I'm sorry, all I heard was Doom 4. From there my brain stopped reading and went into "I WANT IT!" mode. Gimmie Doom 4!

Sounds pretty reasonable to me, the industry is already over satturated with Unreal Engine 3 games, wether they suck or not, almost every game is using it. Although I'm a fan of the UE3 engine, I think Bethesda owe to themselves to use this engine exclusively, especially if they intend on using it for the next Elder Scrolls and Fallout. *drools keyboard*

This is a good thing really. This can help strengthen ZeniMax and Bethesda and help turn it into a force to go against companies liek Activision and EA. So far, Zenimax has not been very tampering, which is a good thing.

Good, you have an engine. Now give me my damn Elder Scrolls already. If I have to wait much longer for an announcement I'm going to violently murder a duck.

Absolutely, positively yes. Maybe the characters won't stand absolutely still during conversation anymore! :-D
