Shadow Warrior proved that we can have the best of both worlds. Old and new school combined into an awesome dance of violence and mutilation of demonic forces. If DooM can do something similar it will be rewarded with my attention and curiosity. If not, I guess I'll just keep playing Shadow Warrior. I can't get tired of it.

Wait... wasn't Doom 3 a "reboot" of sorts?
Of sorts? It was a straight up reboot. Heck, the story wasn't even all that similar, aside from the basic elements, which is kind of impressive given how little story Doom started with.

Oh look. It's another shitty pre-rendered cinematic trailer with a shitty update to a classic enemy design, showing us absolutely nothing about the actual game. I really wish companies would stop wasting peoples time with this shit and just fuck off until they had an actual game to show people.

It doesnt seem to try to be scary and thats nice since Doom was never supposed to be scary.
The original Dooms had plenty of scary horror levels.

Anyways, I don't agree with the stuff a lot of people are saying that the game doesn't need any story and that story doesn't matter. It may have been true when JC said it when he made Doom, but guess what, that was OVER 20 YEARS AGO!

Gaming has evolved. "It's just a game", is no longer a valid excuse for a bad story. The expanded story in Doom 3 as basic as it was, was still a big step up from from the original Doom. I actually really enjoyed exploring the facility while discovering it's evil secrets.

So don't put me into the "story doesn't matter" camp.
First off, Doom had no scary horror levels. There were some that had slower parts, but it was all still a balls to the wall action game 99% of the time. There was no attempt at horror being made aside from a few mediocre jump scares here and there, and even those weren't really trying hard to be scary.

Second, the idea that a game can't be "just a great game" is utter bullshit. Some of the best games I've played in recent years have had story as a near after thought. Certainly they didn't put any effort into making them very good. Sometimes a game is more than strong enough in it's own right, and throwing in any more story than "here's who you are, here's who you're trying to kill or what you're trying to do," is just adding unnecessary bits to the experience. Not every game needs to have a story to be good, but I can think of plenty of games where a hell of a lot of time was wasted on a story that should have just been spent on making the actual game more fun rather than both being mediocre.

*walks by with a "TES VI or bust" sign*

Really hope Bethesda have something more interesting to show. Not knocking Doom mind you, just wanna see a Fallout or a TES game at least announced :)

Honestly I think the best way to remake Doom would be to just locate the guy who made the "Brutal Doom" mod and put him in charge.

I didn't play Doom or Doom 2 when they were big, so my first real contact with the series was Doom 3. For this reason, I may have this wrong, but I'd always figured Doom 3 was sort of a reboot of Doom to begin with. I guess I'd like to see more classic FPS games (and they have had a bit of a renaissance lately), but I dunno whether it has to be Doom of all things that gets a reboot when in my understanding it already got one. And then an HD makeover version. I'd love to see an HD Descent game, but I guess the franchise's name isn't nearly as well-known or influential as Doom.

And they already showed us the Cyberdemon instead of making it a surprise when you get to see it in-game. Too bad.

Still, I can't wait to see more of it.

ok either i want a true to the classic fast paced shooter where i dont have to aim since no matter where i turn there will be something to hit and little to no story to get in the way of the carnage and puzzles with plenty of secret rooms. Or i will want a massive story driven open world romp through mars and hell kinda like fallout 3 in space and with demons and rpg elements that will let me clear entire floors of dungeons in seconds plus craft my own weapons like a new bfg.

btw if its basically just a remake of doom 3 i will be pissed, that game took all the spirit of doom 3 and killed it just to add a horror element that wasnt ever really part of the old games

Being an 80s child, I was eventually exposed to Doom during its free-distribution shareware days when I was I think nine. This tends to be one of my favored FPS, the one that everyone remembers even after all the Halo and Duke Nukem you've got. (I like the Duke too.) Funnily enough, I also like the books and the movie. Anyway, having secured BFG Edition to link the old with the new, I do not believe I need a new Doom at this time.

Glad we have some Doom news, it's been long enough I feel, but this trailer looks a little worryingly brown... you remember how much a flop RAGE was, don't make the same mistakes again...

I really hope they look at the Brutal Doom mod for inspiration, because the thought of playing that, but with modern graphics and animations would be a truly spectacular sight to see.

Who are we kidding, I bet it's basically going to be this:

All hell will break loose if they 'modernise' any of the gameplay (pun intended) But I bet it'll be way closer to COD than original DOOM gameplay-wise

Actually the Brutal DooM mod adds a lot of fun gameplay elements, beyond the gore and profanity (and hey, flipping the bird to a cyberdemon and have it get so enraged it fires 3x faster is hilarious).

I consider the original DooM games my favourite games ever, and yet Brutal DooM I think perfected the formula (it could be more polished, true).

As for the trailer. I don't like that cyber-demon design. Too... Human shaped. Looks like the profile of a Gears of War soldier, a big hunk of meat.

We'll see how the game turns out. I actually liked DooM 3 and what they were going for, and would've preferred if they had committed to the horror theme instead of chicken out mid-game and go back to run-and-shoot gameplay.

All I can hope for this new game is that whatever they decide to do, they have the courage to see it through instead of waffling around when focus tests don't come up as expected.

Because what Doom needs is iron sights and childish swearing, right?
It needs fast-paced, perfectly flowing action and stupid, ridiculous, preposterous amounts of gore.

They already rebooted Doom, Doom 3. It was awesome, not sure why we need another reboot when it was already done in a new fascinating way and then there's the other issue of having an insane modding community still alive for the Doom series including Brutal Doom

These guys need to outsource this to Crotale. They've proven semi-recently with Serious Sam 3 that they really know how to do this sort of thing.

Nevertheless, Doom 3 was actually awesome. Level design was not. How the lighting was used was not. The scarcity of enemies, and sometimes weapons and ammo also wasn't that great.
