I was wondering how many of you guys play dota ? Also how much time did it take you to learn to play ? I have this friend who wants to take it up and thinks he can learn it inside a month. Opinions ?

If you played WC3 before, I see no problem in getting into it. When you're still learning, I suggest to only play closed games with friends. That way, at least griefing is warranted and real-life revenge is swift.

I play at Net Cafes mostly. It's been quite a while since I played my last 5 on 5.

I've played Defence of the Asians Koreans Ancients before, but I haven't got it on my computer or anything. Its a cool game, though. Nice little Mod.
Fix'd.

I play it off and on... I enjoy the game, but there's so many cutthroat players out there with nothing better to do than freak out that it becomes stressful to play.

When a game, something made to entertain, becomes stressful...

Yeah.

Damn, I miss Dota. I used to play probably 1-2 game per day depending on the group I'm matched with. I picked up the game in within a month..not to hard if you played Warcraft III often.

Yeah I play DOTA, and MAYBE he can learn DOTA in a month- if he has a teacher. Newbies are usually thrown to the wolves and mocked. My initial experiances were hatefilled and upsetting. A world of f**kers akin to the Halo community. A game can be ruined by one person leaving, and it requires a decent investment (45 mins for a good 5v5).

I just got finished playing DOTA, and when you know what your doing it's fun and intense. It's just...super harsh though. I'd take your freinds hand gently and teach him how to play with 1v1's first. I played wc3 and I didn't quite understand how to properly control a DOTA hero at first- it's alot of attack and retreat, and using creeps like fluid shields. You need to sharpen and develop instincts to know when a Gank is immineint, when your vulnerable, who your vulnerable to. I played ALL RANDOMS for about 3 or 4 months (if not more) before I really got decent, and only now would I say i'm 'good' because I can generally take a hero, whip up a few recipe's, and not die more then 2 or 3 times a game (i'm on a personally rare "more kills then deaths" ratio streak)

DOTA is only a game to be played if you have an hour or two to blow. Definatly not for casual play.

I primarily hang around Asians, so it's natural I've played some DOTA in my lifetime. However, I didn't get into it too much, and royally sucked. I tended to play other mods, like Moo Moo Hero, Hero Siege and Run Kitty Run. In my opinion, they were much more fun than DOTA, but that's probably because I didn't get my arse handed to me on a regular basis on the other mods... damn Asian friends **shakes fist**.

If you're going to play, here are a few tips:

-As mentioned above, play with friends on a private game. Battle.net don't take kindly to newbies.

-Learn the language. Get used to words like "Push" , "b" (meaning "back" or "pull back" , etc.) "gb" and "clash".

-Memorize the recipes and which items fit which hero.

-Play one hero to death until you master him (you'll thank yourself down the line, preferably start with an STR hero like Sven and/or Leoric).

-After mastering one hero, play nothing but -AR

-Master the art of Denying (killing your own creeps to deny the enemy of gold and exp). It's one of the most important skills you can have.

A lot of people recommend learning Queen of Pain (Akasha) first, as she's better for teaching mana control and escape. I learned with Omniknight. :D

-Master the art of Denying (killing your own creeps to deny the enemy of gold and exp). It's one of the most important skills you can have.
In combination with the art of only last hitting. You don't get any gold for auto attacking an enemy creep. I've seen people keep a lane perfectly static in creep location by simply denying and last hitting creeps, no other attacks.

I play DotA pretty regularly, it's something I boot up when I've got an hour to waste(Sidenote: Don't learn on easy mode. It's shit. I will never understand the obsession with it.) If you don't have any friends you could learn with, there's a selection of AI maps also available on www.getdota.com, I'd recommend you definetly hit up one of these to grasp the basics of the game. I'm sure there's a 'newbie' guide or two knocking around the dota forums somewhere. It'll be far more in depth than anything we can tell you here.

I've been playing DotA since 3.7 RoC version was the one. Teleporting healer FTW! I don't play a lot, so I'm not terribly good, but it's reasonably fun. I mainly play TDA games since people don't tend to leave. I hate it when you're on a pub, get on a nice roll, and someone leaves. :(

I learned from Clinkz, actually. Problem with Wind Walkers is that if your enemy brings out a gem, the only time you can be sneaky is during clashes.

I tend to go for heroes which requires minimal keyboard activity. Though, I once was able to use Bane Elemental and disable a whole team: one was asleep, one was hexed (Guinsoo), one was in the air (Eul's Scepter), one was silenced (Orchid Malevolence) and one was Gripped, in the same clash. After months of not playing, I am yet to be able to achieve that feat again.
