Double Standards, anyone?

So yeah, my fellow Escapists. Have you ever been faced with the 'double standard' when interacting with women in some shape or form?

My favorite one is when a man makes a mistake, he is whipped at by the woman for making it, to a ridiculous point, but when the woman does it, its all fine. If you try to point out that its actually her fault, you just get more backslash from her, and then it SOMEHOW gets pinned on YOU.

What is your favourite?

I'd call that any relationship with the opposite sex ever.

OT; The missus forgot to bring money to the supermarket once and almost had me convinced that she had asked me to pick it up (when she hadn't) and that i'd not been listening to her (which i had, which was the only reason i even won the argument.)

As I had to say to the last 3 people that felt the need to inform me about something I already know allow me to clarify again, I'M NOT A MORON.

My point was that women keep banging on about equal rights. If you want equal rights then you get equal rights in EVERYTHING, not just the parts that suit you.

The double standard comes in from having to pay equal to men and then complaining about it. Thats not wanting equal rights.

I can't believe i've had to explain this twice. The thread is about double standards which that is. It's not a debate on why women should get cheaper car insurance. Wanting equal rights to men and then complaining about having to do something equal to a man is a bloody double standard no matter which way you look at it. Whether it's right or wrong having to pay more insurance as a safer driver is for another debate.

To elaborate further on the point that Rawne is making here, I'll examine an area where it's men with the advantage, income rates. Men almost always make more than women for equivalent work.

However, according to your point Rose, this is valid as long as it's justifiable. Well, here's one justification for you; pregnancy leave. Statistically speaking, a women is far more likely to take extended leave for pregnancy.

You can claim that not every woman is going to get pregnant and you'd be correct, just like I would be correct in claiming that not every male is a bad driver.

If you're going to use statistics to justify unequal policies in one area, then you can't really complain when they're used to justify unequal policies somewhere else.

Note: I'm not a supporter of the income discrepancy.

Actually, technically the men were paying a Man Tax, which was turned into the standard payment because (cynical remark alert!) trying to be equal price-wise came in two flavors, Gain Money or Lose Money, and really, what did you expect them to choose?

That's actually kind of the point of the thread, overdone as it is. The model of equality we're working with isn't "Everyone is treated the same" so much as "women are treated like men". Based on that premise, women ought to be brought up in all the places where men have the advantage, but they also need to be brought down in places where they have the advantage (even if there's a research-backed justification for the discrepancy corrected by either one of those changes). Remember, in logic, the premise being stupid doesn't mean the logic used to reach is is invalid.

Now, that said, what we ought to be going for is "everyone is treated the same." Frankly, given the issue of transgenderism, the whole thing gets a lot more muddy because most discrimination is based on sex, not gender. So in the insurance example, if you've got a person whose sex is male but whose gender is female, she actually is paying a "Man Tax" because psychologically, she's got a tendency to be a safer driver, but because she's got the wrong gonads, she's paying more.

Anyways, I hate double standards based on race more than anything, being racist seems to have certain qualifiers that are racist in and of themselves. For example when Michael Jackson died, some guy said 'Michael Jackson belongs to the black people' and was cheered for; but if a white person said anything remotely like that about anyone they would practically get lynched.

Well, yeah, but no.

What I probably should have said is, expose the irrationality and if they can't accept or see the fault of their own logic, then there are no reasons as to why you're even trying to have a conversation with the individual in question.

So not as much giving up, as don't bother. Let the hypocrit be delusional to someone else. Cut the ties. See, if they can't understand logic, applying it wouldn't do anything. To have a rational argument, it is implied that both people involved have an understanding of the way a rational argument works. If one does not, either person's arguments would simply be dismissed.

One, what you posted isn't a double standard; it's just somebody being an idiot. That and I've seen both men and women pull that kind of stunt, so you can't claim that this is something only women do. Two, I fail to understand the argument that women can't have equal rights and be treated with common courtesy at the same time. Why, yes, I would like equal pay to a man for the same work, and yes, I would like for my date to get the door for me. Mind you, I don't think that only women deserve "special treatment". Everyone can appreciate common courtesy.

To reply to your question, here's my favorite double standard: If a man gets a door for a woman, it's chivalrous. If a woman gets a door for a man, then he's less of a man to go through it.
Seriously, I have tried to open doors for men before and they refused to go through first. I was just trying to be nice, not challenge your masculinity.

-in case of danger ahead the men go first, in case of danger behind "women and children first" (gag of course...maybe)
- a 18 year old guy dates a 16 year old girl hes a perv and dangerous pedobear follower, in the other way around, give that kid a medal hes dating an older girl yay!
- when a guy grabs a girls ass its sexual arresment, the other way its just playing around
- a bunch of girls grab a guy friend and paint is face for halloween its a joke, if guys do that theyre insensitive jerks
- when a guy likes books and games hes a nerd, when a girl does it she hot (but this i can understand XD)
- a girl HAS to get make up and waxed and all that stuff, a guy CANT do that or hes gay
- if a guy has porn or is known to masturbate hes a litle perv, if a girl does it she either a slut or an awesome popular person
