I'm kind of disgusted by the fellow members of my generation and their responses to this comment, in addition to the overly superficial and negative tone created by the author. Not that I'm breaking the chain, but there is a chain of unnecessary cynicism that belongs to this article and its responses.
For one thing, Farmville can create an addiction, just as anything, except maybe marijuana, can cause a god damned addiction. If you have an addictive personality, you can become addicted to many things. And honestly, these days, I see more people wasting their time on games like Farmville as opposed to WoW, because it is cheap, accessible, and well distributed. It's just like any other game, other than the fact that it appeals to a more mainstream audience which is not condemned in the same context of social stigmas in the way that games such as WoW and their players are subjected to. In essence, all of you, belonging to a typical adolescent or young adult's social context, probably have a predetermined opinion of someone who is willing to spend the money to play a higher quality game such as WoW, and therefore criticize and further develop a negative opinion of persons having this quality.
At the same time, because Farmville is a game which belongs to a social networking site, one very popular among this generation, therefore being in the normative social context, it is 'okay' to spend the same amount of time and dedication to a game like Farmville, rather than WoW, because you deem it socially acceptible, and in the same context, are probably all in denial that you have any addiction to it at all.
It takes 28 days to break a habit. Breaking the 'addiction' of Farmville is not an overnight cure that happens by simply going outside one afternoon. It is a commitment to separate yourself from your devotion to the game.
Furthermore, Dr. Phil might be some kind of pompous asshole, but hey, financially, he's doing great. And as far as the values in this country are concerned in the context of living an adult life, he's essentially got it made. So continue your griping and snarling, you're still the entertainment industry's ***** until you become a part of the one percent of this population to which ninety-nine percent of the wealth is distributed.
