The fact that most of these look like Alistair and Leliana really shows up the lack of variety in the face creator thingy.
Happens in game a lot too, I see a guy who looks just like my warden or one of my party and go 'huh?'
I think you can make pretty unique looking characters if you are willing to sacrifice some of the generic pretty girl/handsome guy look a bit in favour of a face with more personality.
People probably just tend to go a bit like "whatever" with it and end up with a generic face. It can be a bit difficult to find that look that is neither generic and goofy in all those sliders. It takes a bit more time and thought.
Perhaps... maybe I just wasn't good at it, because I spent half an hur trying to make a decent looking one!
I can sympathize, as I just a moment ago tried to make a male human character and gave up pretty quickly... Maybe it's just more difficult to envision another character after having only just finished the game with the previous one or maybe it's more difficult to make a male character who looks likable than a female one.
Either way, can't really find any inspiration right now... I mean, when I made the previous one, I took one look at the tattoos you could use and almost immediately got a faint idea of what I was going for. Now it's more about randomly playing around with sliders and going: "Meh, guess this works," ending up with a mix of separately made tweaks.
If I recall, I found making my first Shepard in ME1 quite easy, since I pretty quickly got this idea of making something slightly similar to how adult John Connor looked in a brief peek to the future in Terminator (or was it Terminator 2?). Don't know if he actually looks anything like him, since it was just a faint memory of the scene I worked with (which is actually for the better).
Anyway, the point is that it really comes down to getting inspiration from somewhere (and having decent enough editor to actually get close enough to your idea).
Seeing how this is Bioware's character maker we are talking about, downloading a better hair pack probably wouldn't hurt either... One thing they could improve on.
