Eh, if you can tell it's gay then it's probably gonna be a "take the game and burn it" stereotype

This is a excellent counter-argument to those who say Duke Nukem is a horrible game(morally). Even Duke Nukem doesn't have a problem with gays. Let's see those cane-waving anti-videogame grannies try and touch Duke Nukem now!

Is it odd that the first thing that I thought when I read your post was "That sounds like it could make up part of a sitcom."?

Any gay character in a Duke game was gonna be non stop stereotypes, which would have pissed off the gay community, FOX would have said that it was promoting gay culture to the chitlins and ruining society, that's aside from promoting treating women as sexual objects and of course, rape.
I actually think it'd be pretty hilarious, considering the game is basically one big joke about over the top heterosexuality. But oh my bad I forgot I'm part of the gay community so I'm pissed!!1!!1!

That... Actually might have been kind of cool. It would certainly make the the game more interesting. I say put him back! Or at least bring him back in some DLC!

EDIT: Hmm... New rules. They seem pretty reasonable. Though, I suspect a good number of people here are will be in some serious trouble...
I agree, would've made for an interesting character and a few laughs. Considering Duke Nukem is there mainly for the humor I don't see why joking about it is that bad, my friends certainly have no problem with it, I also don't feel there's still much discrimination in the world for Homosexuals, of course it could just be a regional thing I'm lucky to avoid, or perhaps I just don't notice it.

There we go!

Thank you good sir, for appreciating humor.

I don't normally get offended, yet this game is offensively stupid and puerile. It's a shame that the hobby I love and care so much about heralds this as one of the great success' of the medium. Grow up please...

It would be so good! The jokes are like
Teacher: The goal of every pollen, and all living things for that matter, is to succeed and pass on their genes to their offspring.
Sass man: Not quite all of them.
Que faked sitcom laugh.

I think you're looking at the humor at face value. It's like when someone makes a horrible pun, you don't laugh because the pun was clever, you laugh because of the simplicity and stupidity of it, that being said Duke Nukem ought to be funny for those who share that sense of humor. I honestly don't see what your issue is, but if you are sincerely offended, I believe it's you who needs to grow up.

I also don't know anyone who heralds this as a great success of the medium yet, maybe when it's released we'll see more of that.

Personally I think a massively overblown incredibly gay robot would play well against Duke's massively overblown incredibly matcho manlyness.

Duke himself is the biggest stereotype in gameing so what would be wrong with having his polar opposite?

Dude, chill out.
If films can have Titanic and Superbad in the same medium I don't see why video games can't have Shadow of the Colossus and Duke Nukem Forever.

On Topic:
While having a gay robot in the game would be quite humourous, I don't think having him as a sidekick would be such a great idea as that would imply that he would there through out the entire game, and how many gay jokes could you make and still be funny?
Perfect material for a side character though.

Well I would say that Duke Nukem is somewhat of a vintage series to a lot of people, and yeah even though it hasn't come out yet its received a ton of coverage.

On the offence thing, I don't get offended, my favourite television show is brasseye (youtube 'brasseye paedophile' if you don't know about it its quite confrontational and hilarious). I just doubt that duke is working on any deeper level. There's little irony here in my opinion, and yes, I do understand its a parody of the 80's macho super hero governator films. It's just not a particularly intelligent one and the vast core of its audience won't be buying it for the half decent parody but because it has tits and aliens in it, which just adds to the horrible stereotype that reeks over video games.

In short its utterly stupid and a step back for the industry in my opinion...

Begin the debate.

Fair point (although I wouldn't compare titanic and sotc...)

I'm not outlawing the game it just saddens me a little when people I respect feel so passionately about Okami or Silent Hill 2 then nerdgasm when bulletstorm or this rubbish comes out

With pleasure, good sir!

I don't think anyone buys games for nudity nowadays, the fact that porn is easily attainable for free to anyone with an internet connection is a likely cause, and if they are determined to see some Duke Nukem nudity they could always use youtube or similar sites. As for the Aliens, I don't really see anyone buying it for that... Personally I've always hated the premise of aliens as a force in narrative, (not because I disagree with their existence) I think instead people will purchase it for (apparent) understanding and dedication to exactly what it is meant to be, fun. It has a huge focus on over the top action and weapons, the levels from what I've seen change quite dramatically and look as though they vary quite a bit. The atmosphere is meant to constantly remind you that this isn't anything to be taken seriously. Dukes own personality as the alpha male never reacts in despair to the hoards of enemies that come at him, or whatever the aliens do in the game (well, that's an assumption). The nudity might add a bit to horny gamers' perspective on this. (Speaking frankly, I doubt I won't enjoy it myself) But it's there mostly because of the character and setting. It's not the selling point.

I also don't think it's fair to call it or its success a step back in the gaming industry, a different step perhaps, away from what your hopes are for it, but if we were to call that a back step I would likely declare the majority of games ever made that. From a technical standpoint I'm sure it would be up to modern standards, I hope you will at least give it a try after it comes out, even if it is to confirm your opinion of it.

You may need to look at it properly and think.
Duke Nukem is and always has been a game that finds comedy in makeing fun of itself. It's not meant to be a deep philosophical experience, it's meant to be stupid and it's meant to be puerile.

I'd liken it to Laurel & Hardy, they act like such idiots in their sketches that the audience can't help but laugh.

Do you often get offended by ironic comedy?

I really hope the gay robot sidekick comes back. If nothing else, it would be a really weird conservative goldmine for FOX news for Duke Nukem to both promote misogyny and male homosexuality.

Either that, or a lesbot on Duke's side would have been a really interesting combination.

Fuck, the entirety of Duke Nukem is a joke on the adolescent sexual urges of males. Duke is the epitome of "fuck anything, then kill to get pussy". It's VERY offensive to male heterosexuals. And that makes it funny. That we would deem such a person a "hero".

I'd say mock EVERY sexuality in DNF. Hell, that's what makes us love Duke. He wouldn't be damned to save the world for the President or the cure for Cancer or the betterment of humanity....but they stole his vagina!!! Now it's serious!

i personally think that it doesn't necessarily have to be considered a joke...if the robot is likeable enough (as a character) he could be a character that is remembered....im pretty sure there are other videogames that where considered a joke or weren't taken as serious (story wise or even character wise) but had memorable characters like Bard's Tale comes to mind, even Ratched and Clank (i think lol, and i do like the games even replayed them)

People have suggested that either it should be or should not be dealt with in a joking manner. I don't know. If it were dealt with, the jokes should be about sex and not about sexuality. With Duke, the focus isn't on heterosexuality per se, but on sex. For this to work, the fact that the robot is gay would have to be incidental to any jokes.

It also would be nice to see a more gay characters who don't fit the stereotype. Now people argue that the stereotype is being mocked. Sometimes this is the case, a great example being Will and Grace. It would be nice, though, to see gay characters who don't fit any of the stereotypes any more than the other characters. Not all LGBTQ people are "fairies" or "bears" or "butch" or any of the other stereotypes, in the same way that not all straight men are macho action heroes. (In fact, there are heterosexual people who fit the above stereotypes as well.) Sexuality is a part of identity, but just that ? a part ? not the totality. It would be nice to see less conflation of sexuality and mannerisms/appearance. LGBTQ are just as diverse as everyone else. It will be a good day when games, movies, television ? in short, the media ? reflects this.
