I've seen lots of dumb instruments. Not just in how they play or look but what they are made of. The piano is a string instrument with keys, I mean who thought of that, it's a massive instrument, it weighs a ton, and it's expensive. It's just the worlds most cumbersome harp with a different interface. How does one began to invent an instrument like that? It's just plain stupid. Don't even get me started on the tambourine. You can't even really play the dumb thing it's just a funny maraca, and the triangle, really? Their are so many dumb instruments it's ridiculous. Which instrument do you think is the dumbest and why.

The Broccoli Ocarina. Don't believe me? Watch:

I'm sorry, but vegetables weren't meant to be played as instruments. They're meant to be eaten, or in PETA's case, used as swimwear!

What do a violin and a viola have in common?

They both make the same noise when you sit on them.

I'm afriad you've confused dumb with mindblowing AWESOME-ness

But I'd say the harmonica is a dumb instrument, mainly because I could never get the hang of it despite understanding everything about it.

The dumbest instrument? Well, as a musician i've seen a lot fo stupid shit in my time so I guess i'll chime in with some of the worst.

1. 6 String Bass Guitar. If you want a 6 string guitar then just buy a regular guitar, and no instrument needs a neck thicker than a Buick.

2. The Stratacoustic guitar by Fender. The Stratacaster may be an icon of modern music, but it's still so damn boring and making an acoustic body shaped like one not only seems lazy but it looks silly.

3. Tunrtables. No i'm just kidding, they aren't even a musical instrument.

The Piano has extremely large strings, that explains the size. Not thick, but long. The strings stretch out pretty far and the piano has one of the largest pitch ranges of any instrument. There needs to be two or three strings for each note, as well as thick hammers to strike the strings to produce the right sound. There is also the pedals and the tuners. There is enough in the piano to warrant the size. Besides; what would you expect from an instrument from the 18th Century? As to why it cannot be played like a guitar; The thickness of the low strings can't take the high pitch of the higher strings, so this hypothetical replacement would have an impractically long or wide neck. Price: Pianos are handcrafted, and they're very hard to make. You could by a compact keyboard; small, cheap, and light.

As for dumb instruments; I have to say the serpent. It's a precursor to the tuba and it's pretty ancient, but its incredibly awkward to hold.

1. The Six-String Bass has a different range than the guitar, making it reach into the guitar's range on the upper three strings, while it still provides access to the lower notes of the Four-String. Sure the neck is thick, but it's meant to be played by people with large hands or wrists.

2. The Strat is a shape, it doesn't change the sound or anything. It's iconic and the design is stolen more than any other guitar design. The shape is boring, maybe, but if somebody's playing it fantastically, then the shape of the guitar shouldn't matter.

3. Turntables are used for mixing. They're not necessarily instruments so much as musical tools that can be used live. I wouldn't call it an instrument, but doing it right takes a lot more talent than one might think.

The recorder! I remember playing those things in grade school. Let me give you a picture: It was a quiet tuesday morning, my class filed into music class, recorders in hand, excited about the prospect of producing music. Each and every one of us raised our recorders to our mouths, and then: We all made noise similar to a cat being hit with a hockey stick while trapped in a box made of tin. Recorders suck.
