I've tried a couple times to get into Dwarf Fortress, never hard enough though. I know I can because I managed to get into Bay12's liberation game and enjoyed it quite a bit... even though I never got far. I lways started dwarf fort at night though, when I was nearing time to sleep so it was always difficult to do.

Plans for tomorrow: Play Dwarf Fortress all day and get my head round it. I look forward to having my fort massacred.
Or you could always join us whenever the succession game starts. Having a few newbies never hurts when the Fun is at its best when it's going downhill.

EDIT: Oh, missed the post about clutter. I was actually referring to what a visual mess some graphics tilesets become rather than the fortress layout. When everything is sprited instead of alphanumeric code, you have to admit things aren't quite as readable.
Every time I have tried to play I got five minutes in then realise I'm tired so I've never even touched the fortress part of the game.

Still, I think NetHack is a better game for newbies; DorF is just... deep, even by roguelike standards.
NetHack for newbies? Not a chance.
Yeah there nothing newbie in having a rock fall on your head as the wizard and die just a few steps from the start.

Compared to Dorf Fortress, Nethack is positively forgiving. I mean at least in Nethack it's theoretically possible to win.

Heh. As someone who just started Nethack thanks to people always mentioning it when Dwarf Fortress comes up, I find myself wondering why you italicized 'possible' when 'theoretically' is sitting next to it.

Overall, despite there being no win conditions, I'd describe Dwarf Fortress as the easier game. You certainly are going to last longer in any case, and you can always reclaim lost fortresses. This means one could technically consider it impossible for there to be a total loss involved, as opposed as that idea is to the game's mantra.

PS: I am very, very pleased that food poisoning is absent as a feature in Dwarf Fortress. Enjoy it while you can people, there are plenty of complaints about overproduction of food in the Bay12 forums.
