Oh Nintendo when will you do away with the terrible gimmicks and just focus on quality games.
Are you kidding me? Discarding the 3D aspect, it's a portable Wii! Plus the line-up of games (MGS, Resi Evil, Street Fighter, Kingdom Hearts etc.) and Kid f*cking Icarus means that they not only focused on quality games, but what they and the rest of the industry considers innovation as well. If this "gimmick" is anything like the Wii, it'll sell millions and be hugely successful.

You should have just watched the keynote, trust me you wouldn't have said that if you did.

It wouldn't matter if I watched the keynote or if Miyamoto was standing in my living room explaining it to me while he rubbed my feet. The fact of the matter is that pure quality gaming without any bad gimmicks will ALWAYS win out over the current flavor of the month gimmick. It doesn't matter if it's a glove, a robot, a rubber mat you run in place on or a freaking bazooka, gimmicks typically don't work when it comes to video games. Even the Wii, while financially successful, is shunned largely by most actual gamers because it's a Gamecube with a bad gimmick.
What's the gimmick here, can I ask?

It can't be 3D, because you can turn it off if you want. Ergo, the games have to be developed to be perfectly playable without the 3D aspect at all. It's just a way to add depth of field.
Come again? Your kidding right. They are naming it the 3DS for Christ sake. Just because you can turn it off doesn't make it any less another gimmick in a ever growing line of bad gimmicks Nintendo seems hell bent on using dating all the way back to the useless plastic robot.
I think we have an angry 'argh Nintendo don't do hardcore because they're making too much money' guy here. They are making money because the games are selling well BECAUSE people LIKE them. If they're gimmicky, who cares? As long as a game is fun, it's justifying its existence XD

OT:I can't see any visual diffrence it's like they stuck a diffrent brand on to a exsisting product and are re-selling it. Oh wait the analog stick.
It's a code name, it is actually the next generation handheld, not a DS revision.. AND it offically as powerful as a gamecube, but if rumors are to be believed it's almost as powerful as current gen consoles, personally Imma say it'll end up being more powerful than the PSP at least. We shall see
So the name is a lie and the picture is a lie, but if its as powerful as a gamecube. I may raise my eyebrow. Isn't the PSP at the level of a Ps2 so wouldn't it be stronger anyway if its at the level of a gamecube.
No. elvor0 is incorrect.
The name is the Nintendo 3DS, the picture is accurate, but obviously it's unable to show on a 2D format the method by which the 3D screen works. What the picture above isn't showing you is that it also has two camera lenses on the outside, so that you can take 3D pictures. The top screen is a 3.5" widescreen 3D screen that doesn't need glasses, the bottom is a touchscreen.

Besides, what different did you want to see? If the UI works, why the hell would you screw it up?
Ha so i was right it is a revision, not a bad revision mind you but it just seems like they have revised the DS alot.
It is definately NOT a Revision, it's the next Handheld from Nintendo. It does have the name 3DS, that is what it looks like, but it is not a New DS. It is it's own thing. And who cares about Gimmicks? If you can turn it OFF, then it shouldn't piss you off. Also, with it's Graphics equivalent to the Gamecube (Xbox or Good PS2 Graphics?), and with such awesome titles, it shouldn't discourage you just because it has 3D.

Oh for Flippers sake. How many DS variants are they going to release? DS, DS Lite, DS XL, DSi, 3DS, 3DS Lite, 3DS console, 3DS with waffle maker... the latter probably won't happen anytime soon, sorry for building up your hopes.

There's a hands-on article on Kotaku now, and other than the 3D only working in a very specific position (something the author is hoping to get fixed before release) it's looking absolutely wonderful, or so he says.

I can't believe how many times I've had to tell people that the 3DS isn't a revision but a next gen handheld. No one complained about the GBA varients.

Nintendo wins E3.

The only casual stuff I saw was Nintendogs and Wii Party.

So basically they just made Microsoft their *****, and Sony is probably cowering somewhere.

Also, the new Kirby is the most adorable thing I have ever seen!
There's a new kirby?
[sub]haven't been following coverage[/sub][sub][sub]was going to learn about it in gameinformer next month DON'T HURT ME![/sub][/sub]
OT: Can't say I'm particularly excited about a 3D handheld. I don't want to have to wear glasses when I'm playing a HANDHELD. I could see console gaming, but wearing a goofy pair of glasses in the airport or other public place doesn't really appeal to me.
Still excited to see the DS with an analog, and backwards compatibility makes me interested. It seems really soon after the DSi though...

I likey. No new UI so theres not going to be much in the way "Let's make everything use the touchscreen whether it needs it or not!" crap this go round and you'll need to try pretty hard to fuck the 3D graphics bit up to the point of horror.

When you completely upgrade the hardware to the next generation of hardware, it's generally a next gen device. Funny how that works. :p

Fuck yes. In the words of Moviebob himself: Come on, Nintendo, it's been 24 years since the last Kid Icarus game. Give us a new one. (Or something to that extent)

Surprised they heard our pleas...

A new Kid Icarus game? Rock on! Pit hasn't seen much action since the gameboy and his appearance in Super Smash Bros Brawl. This handheld is sounding more and more attractive.

You won't need glasses for the 3DS apparenly. Plus it has a slider so you can turn off the 3D completely if you want.

3D kingdom hearts? I don't understand. Is it some sort of cash in game cause I'm not buying it unless it has some sort of relevance to the story line. 3ds de loco. Intresting thing about kid icarus. I can't wait to see what spoony will deliver when he gets back from this place.

Zelda on the 3DS. Looks like Ocarina of Time. Make of this what you will. All screenshots are on Nintendo's server, nothing fake.

P.S. Thanks

People don't seem to get that the 3DS is not jsut another DSi, ie a DS with extra stuff. It is a completely new console, it has just retained the same basic look so that it can be backward compatable more easily.

I might get it as long as it doesn't require stupid glasses ill be fine
The post actually specifies that it doesn't require glasses.

Actually, the Gamecube was the most technologically advanced console of it's generation. So assuming that it is as powerful as a GameCube, that puts it ahead of the PSP.

Well anyways I guess it doesn't matter how powerful the handheld console is. Just like the Gamecube and PSP, both were the most powerful "consoles" in their field during their generation, but both lost to its competitors. Maybe this trend is trying to tell us something.

Also I am concerned how this may be a useless upgrade considering that the DSi is capable of using panoramic 3D technology without the use of 3d-glasses. Two 3d games were already released in japan for the DSi.

The name is a CODENAME, much the same as Project Natal, Nintendo have been saying the 3ds is a code name all the while people've known about it's existance, and the design is nice, why change it drastically from the DS? As for the PSP thing I always thought the cube was less powerful, but whatever which ever one's more powerful it's stronger than that most likely.
So it's like the next DS like how 360 was the next xbox or the ps2 was the next playstaion. Still the picture gave me the impresion that it was a revision i mean it does essential look the same as the old ones. So will it have it's own name then like Nintendo handheld 3DDDDDDDDDDDDDDD.
Yeah Exactly like that

E3 2010: Nintendo Formally Reveals Its 3DS, Kid Icarus

Nintendo formally revealed its 3D gaming handheld at E3 2010, and while it didn't show off the glasses-free 3D, it did show off a new Kid Icarus holy crap.

At its E3 2010 press conference, Nintendo closed by showing off something we all knew was coming: The Nintendo 3DS [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99347-Nintendo-Reveals-New-3D-Handheld] handheld. Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata stressed that the device's top screen would feature full 3D without the need to wear awkward glasses or buy thousands of dollars of hardware.

While Iwata did not show off any of the 3DS' 3D display (understandably so - how do you make it look good for everyone viewing on a 2D screen at home?) he did state that it would have always-on WiFi, and claimed that it would have the most third party support of any Nintendo console at launch.

He also revealed a very old friend: The lone angel Pit, main character of Kid Icarus - yes, that's right. There will be a new Kid Icarus at launch.

Other developers and franchises that have signed on to the 3DS include Kingdom Hearts (Square Enix), Resident Evil (Capcom), Saints' Row (THQ), and Metal Gear Solid (Konami).

The 3DS will also play 3D movies, like How To Train Your Dragon - but will it play Avatar?

We'll know how well it works when we visit the Nintendo booth later this week.

It's worth mentioning that despite the name, Nintendo has stressed that this is not just another DS, like the DSi or Lite. This is entirely new hardware like the DS was to the Game Boy Advanced - it just happens to have a familiar shell thanks to backwards compatibility with DS titles.

Greg Tito has more from the Nintendo E3 Conference [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/101374-E3-2010-From-the-Nintendo-Press-Conference].
