It's great to hear that the definitive Portal experience will be reaching a wider audience and that PS3 players will get to experience a solid, properly working dose of Gladdos and that Valve games, the pure awesomeness that they are, will finally be even more accessible but.........WHERE IN GOD NAMES IS EPISODE 3!!!!

Eh hum. Sorry about that, I know the secret surprise was not Half-life related but that just blurted out...... and I typed it.

Again, no grudges just a bit disappointed that the surprise announcement wasn't really all that awesome for me personally. It's great for PS3 players, but it means pretty much jack squat for Xbox or PC/Mac owners. If this is the surprise of course, you never know.

Also I'm sure Newell's comment about it being "the best on any console" was just pandering to the crowd, I'm sure both 360 and PS3 versions will be equally good.........they better be.
I wouldn't say that it is leaving Mac and PC gamers out. Steam is a cross platform distribution system. If PC and Mac can play TF2 together, what about PS3 and PC and Mac?

"You guys are dicks, and your console sucks. You don't deserver to buy our games, go have fun with Gran Turismo: Forever or something. Incidentally, care to buy Portal 2?"
Then don't buy it rofl, I never get the attitude that publishers need to be "entitled" to sell you their games, either buy them or don't.

Also Portal 2 IS still coming out for the 360, I don't get why people think it suddenly isn't, they just wont get Steam support rofl, which might be something to do with Microsoft's more restrictive policies about their online usage.

Oh and the reason for doing this NOW is (apart from the obvious financial benefits) with the release of the Source games for Mac, Valve had to port all the Source games to work perfectly with OpenGL anyway, which was always the problem before with PS3 support.

It also conveinently explains the lack of Episode 3, since that's two more formats Portal 2 is going to be on announced in the last 3 months. Plus, major props for sneaking Steam onto consoles. I wonder if that will result in a Steamworks for PS3 and cut out PSN altogether? PlayStstion 3 owners, fasten your seatbelts.

Oh Valve! You epic trolls you!

Does this mean PS3 TF2 gets the Class updates?
Oh yes, I have a feeling that might pop up. As well as some cross platform gaming perhaps?
And, of course, steam is free.

I wonder if Valve's Steam will just eventually replace PSN.

Doubt it will happen, but it would be a very interesting development.

I'm going to be honest, the surprise that Steam is coming for PS3 is GREAT, but Gabe kiiinda didn't present it well... he put too much emphasis on the fact that Portal 2 was coming to PS3, and kinda just mentions Steam at the end.

That gave a sense of anti-climax, really - if Gabe had gone "I'm pleased to announce that STEAM IS COMING THE PS3", that would have made the whole crowd go berserk. (in a good way :p)

I'm of the opinion that those reactions were fake and we were being trolled for quite some time. Maybe not at the very beginning with the Orange Box EA port but I'm pretty sure that Valve's had this in mind for some time. I mean he compared the PS3 to the gamecube, what? A month ago? By then I'm sure he already had this in the works. Developers just don't pull this kinda awesome out of their asses.

Congrats PS3 users. Good job Valve. And screw you microsoft for wanting to make valve updates on the 360 a for pay service, that and having PC games for that shitty windows live service. I want my updates >=(

Not sure, Valve didn't directly develop the OB version the PS3 has remember, so more importantly (for PS3 owners) I wonder if they're going to go back and redo it properly, as well as add support for their other recent titles.

Also I doubt cross platform games are gonna work, not to kick of the whole PC vs consoles thing again but mouses + keyboard don't really mix well with controllers, and as far as I'm aware the console versions of Valve games don't use dedicated servers do they? (Might be wrong on that, does anyone know for sure?)

i can understand the xbox, because its basically a pc for people who cant afford gaming pcs, but the ps3? gabe bashed the ps3 several times.

furthermore, he likes the wii, so why no nintendo support now that you have gone multiplat?
]

because the wii isnt strong enough a platform(hardware wise...and software)

If they are making an effort to put Steam onto a console, I have a feeling that they are willing to put an independent effort into the games they release there. No more second hand development.

And cross platform gaming can work. Halo 2 for PC was compatible with the Xbox version of the game.

And, isn't it possible to plug a mouse and keyboard into a PS3? I thought I heard that somewhere.

"Portal 2 will be "Steamworks enabled," which includes community support features, such as chat. It will not accommodate cross-platform play."

Being able to chat with Steam users on PC from your PS3 could be pretty cool, I hope it does set the way for some sort of online or portable version of Steam only with the community and chat features that you can use anywhere. :p

ps3 does have mouse and keyboard support. Its just that most games(if not all) released on the platform only support the gamepad

For those who are interested in the footage:

Or in the trailer alone:

I do have one problem with this. Why did he say that the PS version would be the best? Why better than the PC's?

Oh look, a developer screwing over a certian console.

Fuck you Valve, I was too stupid to finish Portal anyway.

Seriously, why do people do this? ESPECIALLY VALVE, I did not see this. They're sneaky, but I've lost a bit of respect for them now

Wow, so still no mention of the thing that Valves core fanbase have been waiting for for the past 4 years?
