Yet another case of idiots over-reacting and getting all preachy about a video game, albeit one based on a book/play/whatever the fuck.

If anyone here is an idiot, it's the dude at EA that didn't think anyone will have issues with the idea of beneficial commiting of sins.
No, that person isn't an idiot. They made a pun, a play on words, and a joke. People who get all bent out of shape over something so trivial and silly are the idiots who need to take a nap in a running combine harvester. You sit here and call foul on EA because of something like this?

I think the promotion is fine, and let me be totally honest, even if they WERE giving out dates with professional escorts as a prize, it's not a new idea. Ubisoft has been here with their "Frag Dolls" and oppertunities to go out/hang with them and nobody batted an eye.

The problem is that the anti-gaming/pro-censorship/anti-sex/anti-violence "groups" (organized or not) have been winning continuously where it matters. They whine, and game companies back down. Heck, Bethesda wouldn't even stand up to the Australians about animations of a guy giving himself an injection in Fallout 3.

Lust fits with the promotion because it's a game based on the 7 deadly sins. Works perfectly.

The promotion also makes sense if they tell the Booth Babes to be unusually flirty and encourage customers to be that way back, and then to pick out the prize winner(s) from the crowd based on whom they like. Assuming they sign up for it, it's really no big deal. As long as they aren't being paid directly for sex (though that might happen if they indeed are selecting people they like) there really isn't an issue.

It's no worse than what goes on during some of those "hang with the band backstage" promotions which oftentimes amount to the performers checking out the crowd, deciding whom they like, and then well... we all know about rockstars and groupies. :p

You can say "it's differant, it's differant" but no, it really isn't (hey that rhymes).

Instead of apologizing EA should be defending their ideas, ignoring the criticism, and forcing the issue.

I don't even know if their around anymore, but what's next? Going after the Frag Dolls?

Or worse, look at like last year's video game awards where Marissa Miller (I think that was the name) pretty much invited the world to play Gears Of War 2 with her under the gamertag "Pussy Pounder" (gee, that was subtle). Then I seem to remember someone telling me Asia Carerra (porn starlet) made a point out of saying that she played Unreal Tournament at some point and was a "real nerd" in what struck me as being a promotional thing as well.

Now granted the Frag Dolls promotions and what EA is doing there (basically their own version in a way, oriented on this specific game rather than a team of company spokeswomen) are a step further than the above, but not pushing the envelope even slightly. If anything it proves gaming is a big business like any other. It's just relatively "new" for gaming as opposed to say the music industry or whatever.

Trust me, the way it sounds I very much doubt the girls in question are in any trouble given the way it sounds like it was supposed to work.

Apologies if I misunderstand the whole thing, I haven't heard about this except for the above article and might myself be reading it badly (if for example EA intended it as a joke to begin with, but I'm guessing it was a real contest).

Sorry, but like in the article says - it can and probably will backfire. You can't make a joke of something and forget that some people might find that offensive. I mean, you can, but then don't complain when someone has a problem with it.

Also, I don't call foul on EA because of this situation. I call faul on them because of every game they helped crash and burn.

It´s promotion on the game, of course they knew that the shit was going to hit the fan!
All media coverage will help sell this game.
If the media and the moral douchebags hates this game the kid´s going to buy this!

Maybe, but, it's just seems hypocritical to me that a press that doesn't shame them for the very concept of booth babes would freak out over this.
People who go to those places like Booth Babes, but this is too far for them.
Sure--I just don't understand how they can put their "this is too far" point where they do without being hypocrites.
EA fucked up, that's it, and people are just trampling on them.
Yeah, but let's at least be honest about how EA fucked up: they went too far in the opinion of a bunch of hypocrites, and now those people are trampling on them for a hypocritical reason.
I think you're being unfair there Cheeze. The issue here is that EA seemed to be legitimising inappropriate and anti-social behaviour, which is a completely separate issue to whether or not booth babes are a good idea.

so let me get this straight.

my picture of me touching Lara Croft with my tongue is worthless now?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

seriously, EA has been ALL misses with the promotion of this game. They make a fake protest at E3, and now this debacle? They have to be intentionally failing. Maybe they'll blame their failure at promotion by saying the opened a pandora's box of wickedness in making this game.

How could nobody at EA not see how 'Booty' could be misconstrued when they had just said the phrase "acts of lust"?

Although... Heh heh. Booty.
I think that was the point. You know, the whole double entendre deal?
I'm assuming for the sake of the statement that the apology was a genuine "whoops, that's an awkward moment" explanation from EA.

The post was also an excuse to type 'booty'.
[sup]Heh heh.[/sup]

It was a bad idea in the first place. They knew that someone was going to get offended!

If you touched Lara Croft with your tongue, that should be reward enough.

I think that you all fail to understand that Comic Con is trying to appeal to a broader audience then just "guys who like booth babes." For example there are going to be lots of tween Twilight fans, which means they might want to keep it a bit more freaking low key and should have stopped EA Games. It's not morality police it's economics. The more people something appeals to the more money they make. And remember EA Games owns Mythic and this is going to reflect on those games too.

Lastly, if a woman wants to dress up sexy and get paid to decorate a booth she in no way is agreeing to allow guys to paw her and should be treated like any other employee. Actors are hired for these gigs, but no one expects Robert Pattinson to get pawed for a contest, no matter how many fan girls lust over him.

Just so we have our facts straight, what behavior are we talking about?
I mean jackasses making inappropriate advance, trying to cop a feel, that kind of thing. The majority of people are going to see that EA thing and are going to get it straight away, but there are going to be those who see 'commit acts of lust' and are going to take it too far.

It would be awesome if a particularly sharp-tongued feminist woman were to win the contest.

Agreed.

Seriously, it was obviously a joke. People don't really expect that they're giving out their Booth Babes as escorts, do they?
Why not. It is acceptable for a contest to have a dinner with a celebrity. And they are technically celebrities. It wasn't like there was any promises of sex. Just 2 humans eating at the same table.
