Yes there is. Competition. People seem to forget that Battlefield used to be the king of the online military shooters but was dethroned by Call of Duty. You think they would have put as much effort into Bad Company 2 and did awesome things like including free map packs and dedicated servers if they weren't out sold by Modern Warfare? If they do somehow manage to overtake Call of Duty then it means Activision will just have to start putting effort into the next Call of Duty game. When there's intense competition among game companies like this then it benefits all of us.
I agree with you there competition breeds innovation.

Still Modern Warfare franchise has alot of wieght behind it, BF3 will have to excel at every level. From what I've seen of BF3 so far they're doing an excellent job.

On the one hand we have a game once again going to the middle east with a USP of it "looks good". On the other we have a game whose's story has gone off the deep end with more cold war blues. Eitherway, they don't compare gameplaywise, they are both good in their own unique ways, but COD will still do better overall. PC wise however, Battlefield will win.

I have no interest in both games whatsoever, but maybe I'll buy BF3 just because I hate Kotick.

Bah. Battlefield 3 and MW3 are, to all intents and purposes, going to be the same goddamn game.

Here's the list for the drinking game! Feel free to add to it if you so desire.

"Here are some terrorists/'Russians with silly accents'. Here is a gun. There is cover. Shoot them."
Both games will "feature realistic cover-based combat" on the cover as advertisement.
Both games will feature the death of an important senior/big brother figure around the end of act two.
And the chances of the games including the 'threat of global nuclear warfare' is probably going to be somewhere in the vicinity of 100%.

If Battlefield 3 is as good, or better, than Battlefield 2, then Activision should be worried. I mean, yeah, C0D is still enjoyable, but the last few iterations just did not have the same feel and enjoyment as the first four titles.

CoD moved away from the comeraderie of the soldiers that was evident in the first titles and more in to this macho bravado feel that just doesn't work as well. When you play the first titles, you get the Saving private Ryan, Band of Brothers feel, which makes it so much more. It's just not there for the Modern Warfare series. World at War had a bit of it, but even that paled in comparison to the older titles.

Good for them. Battlefield is my favorite shooter out there. Realistic, intense, and damn fun. The Call of Duty franchise have been pumping out the same game with a reskin 5 or so times in a row now, every year and a half its the exact same thing packaged in a more obnoxiously lazy package. Fuck Call of Duty, I think Battlefield is actually a serious contender to take the shooter crown. It already has it in terms of quality, but from what ive seen, on the internet and in the public view, people are getting bored and realizing how shit Call of Duty continues to get. Gives an opening for Battlefield to go in and take the profits crown
