EA Reveals Dead Space 3 DIY Gun Shop

From a jury-rigged mining tool to the Jesus and Mary Chain Gun, the Dead Space franchise has come a long way.

Remember back in those first moments of the original Dead Space, when you were struggling desperately to survive an onslaught of horrifying space zombies with nothing to protect yourself but a glorified flashlight? Good times! Doesn't look like that'll be the case in Dead Space 3, however. This time around, the intrepid Isaac Clarke will pack serious heat, including some that he designs and builds himself.

The Dead Space 3 Weapon Crafting trailer demonstrates how easy it is to design, build and share weapons of whatever type you like, but my fancy is tickled more by the names of the blueprints that are already in the game, like "Hot Death," for instance, or the "Show Stopper." There's also "Mjolnir," which is presumably good for hitting people, and my personal favorite, "The Jesus and Mary Chain Gun."

It's not exactly subtle and Dead Space purists may find it a little off-putting, but I think if we accept that EA has, despite its protests to the contrary, pretty much abandoned the survival-horror angle and turned this game into an undead slap-chopper, then we might actually have some fun with it. DIY gunnery is always a good time, after all, and embracing your inner Jesse Ventura can be surprisingly cathartic.

Wait...I thought that in the Deadspace universe the best weapon to beat the necromorphs was something to cut the limbs off and that most of the useful weapons were industrial tools. Why on earth are there now chainguns and fire bullets in a game where you're meant to be an engineer and not Master Chief?

At the risk of starting another dialogue tree of hate, (god, I hate those) this really isn't what I wanted in this game. EA really look like they've gone down the road of horror being a fun extra in the game, instead of being the very basis of its existence. I'm not judging it prematurely though, I hope it's still good! Actually, the reason that I absolutely hate the new material coming through about Dead Space 3, is that though it isn't likely to be the game I wanted, it still looks like a fun game worth getting. Just don't think about it being castrated, jaymesfogarty!

Captcha: chance of rain. Hmmm, even the captcha hasn't got its fingers crossed too tightly. We'll just have to wait and see!

I cannot even begin to describe how little of a shit I give about this series anymore.

"GUNS! PRETTY GUNS!"

When that's the best advertising pitch they can come up with in the year 2012, there's something wrong.

My thoughts exactly, there's a reason the Marines on the Valor in DS1 were completely destroyed. it wont matter much to me though, i'm just going to grab the ole' trusty plasma cutter and use only that. Sure this bench tool thing is in the game, but there not forcing me to use it, i'll just upgrade Cutter's strength or such. That way i don't need to suffer it and the people that want it can have it.

Seems interesting. Especially that Line Gun with the Flamethrower on it. That's pretty sweet. I'd probably make a weapon and call it "The Wet Knapkin". Low damage, low speed, low ammo capacity. For the people who want a ridiculous challenge.

You know what? I'm actually starting to wonder if this might be a good game. Sure its not really Dead Space proper, and any notion of survival horror has been tossed out the nearest airlock, but it almost looks like it could be a fun monster mash in its own way, sort of like a less OTT Dead Rising mixed with Lost Planet.

No. I remember being able ignore ammo drops because I was carrying too much to begin with, wearing a suit that could monitor my health, supply me with breathable air in the vacuum of space as well as project a clear line towards my destination, having damn near perfect aim despite the player character having no firearms training and oh yea the ability to slow the passage of time of hostiles and environmental obstacles. Its hard to be scared from feeling vulnerable when your a walking space magic armory.

I'm all for difficult survivor horror but I really think the first Dead Space has been put on some sort of horror icon pedestal it has no right to be on. You know how many times a body jumped up and caught me by surprise? Once, the first time I played the game. Oh dead body I didn't kill just sitting in the middle of an unavoidable hallway? Seems legit to me! Not like I'll preemptively shoot them from now on.

High art Dead Space was not.

OT: I like the idea of custom weapons. It could lead to some interesting combinations or at the very least let you create something that favors your play style more.

Once again, THIS SERIES WAS NEVER SCARY. It's about walking around a brightly-lit space ship shooting things. I had scarier moments in Doom 3!

It did manage to startle me once or twice with jump scares, I admit, but that's not the same thing as being SCARED.

Do they still have the "survival" aspect? The painfully-limited ammo was the real draw of that kind of gameplay for me--is that still intact?

Just what we need. More horror franchises turned to mindless shooters. EA said they need to sell 5 million copies of this. I fuckin' hope they don't. For the sake of video game industry.

I have to agree with you. I've never been a fan of Dead Space (survival horror isn't really my thing, never played Silent Hill much and didn't like Metro 2033 very much) but those fake survival horror games that turn out to be frantic killathons are great! Fun hectic shooters have sort of died out beyond that in favor of tactical cover based shooting, but I really enjoyed L4D and Dead Rising (once I got over its control issues) and this looks like it could be a pretty fun game. I think they would have been better off doing a new IP though because fans will feel alienated and some people, myself included, hate jumping into a story part way through.

Pretty much this. The Dead Space games have never put the survival in survival horror.

It's true that the first game was more of a horror game than the later instalments but that's only because they stopped ripping off Event Horizon (which I am coincidentally watching as I type this) and decided on what they wanted Dead Space to be: a solid third-person shooter/action game with lashings of blood and gore that just happens to feature grotesque reanimated corpses as cannon fodder.

I honestly think the developers were wise to drop the horror angle, they were never going to be able to maintain it all the way through three games. Dead Space 2 proved that you can still create the same atmosphere of tension and unease without it.

As for weapon crafting, I'm quite excited for it. Isaac's an engineer by trade, it's about time they let the player use some more of his skills.

It looks like a better version of the Dead Rising 2 weapon creator.

Hopefully it wont be TOO overpowered.

Also I agree with those above saying Dead Space was never really a horror game. I tend to read the series thusly:
DS1: Third Person Shooter with Survival Horror Elements about the discovery of the necromorphs and markers and whatnot. An introduction to the universe and Issac. Has some genuinely good horror moments at the start but gets progressively less scary as it goes on. I read this as Issac getting over his initial fear and going "Hey I can kill these things, nothing to be afraid of lets just get out of here". Which lets be honest is what most people would do. Adapt and survive.

DS2: Third Person Shooter with less Horror elements than DS1 and seems to have abandoned the Survival aspect almost completely. I read this game as expanding the scope of the universe. bringing in competing conspiracy plots from the Unitologists and EarthGov as Issac struggles not to lose his mind. We see Issac struggling to cope with the death of his wife/girlfriend (don't remember what she is, sorry) and the effects of a Necromoph infestation in its earlier stages unlike the one on the Ishimura which had run its course and was trying to spread.

DS3: From what I have sen so far we will be seeing Issac turning from a man hunted by the necromorphs and just trying to survive to actively trying to stop them. This seems like a logical bit of character progression for him and the addition of the coop character shows that other people are fighting back against the Necromorphs like Issac did in DS1.

However the addition of another person will probably shatter whatever horror aspect is left and the gun bench has the potential to produce some really overpowered guns which will throw away the last shards of the survival settings.

So, yeah, I think it's clear that by the third game, the man who has lived through the first two games isn't exactly a baby anymore.

With that in mind, somebody with that much hands-on experience is probably up to jury rigging by now...

Look, you can make cool guns! This is what we've been throwing our money at! Who wants a good story and level designs anyways?
