Kill all but the important aliens that can provide information. They've been around for a decade, prospering from the murders of untold numbers of humans and colonisation of a planet that's not theirs. This wouldn't be the time for morality and alien rights. We would need to show them we're ruthless b******* and that they don't want to mess with us. Then we would have to produce the most hideous weapons that our minds can create and deploy them ruthlessly on any non-human that showed its face in our solar system again.

The colonizers wouldn't have the army backing them at the time (according to the OP), and bombing the area wrecks the point of colonization.

We don't HAVE to go to Mars, we just need to fend off an opposing interstellar army. And if you think that humans don't the the drive, ingenuity, and resourcefulness to do some major damage, you underestimate us greatly.

Besides, as someone else pointed out, the initial waves would be tempered immensely by them catching smallpox/polio/a good cold and dying horribly.

It just seems a little stupid that an invading force wouldn't have an army to back them up. Why go to all the trouble of invading a planet only to risk failure?

Well, maybe if the aliens were that stupid we would stand a chance.

The more practical side of me wants to say execute them. Can even kind of justify it since they were apparently fine with coming over there to take our world and enslave us. They're all scum anyway.

I'd say imprison them though. Don't feel comfortable with the idea of sentencing people to death if we can just imprison them.

You'd rather rot in a prison being questioned for the rest of your life? Well, people have different opinions and preferences but that doesn't make one right or wrong. Personally though, I'd much rather die that live in a prison for the remainder of my time. Unless I have a chance of escape!

My personal philosophy of "valuable life" (summarized):
1) Sapience (rational intelligence) is valued, no matter what species possesses it.

2) The assumption of sapience assumes that the species must make some intention of using it, and is capable of reason. (This assumption would hold true for any space-faring species, at least at some point of their development. It's impossible for them to have achieved space travel without some form of cooperation, simply due to the scale of the sciences involved, and cooperation is a social function for intelligent beings, ergo, reason must exist.)

3) Following 1 and 2, if communications or appeal to reason break down entirely, that's when I resort to more difficult methods: Is it more cruel to imprison indefinitely, to execute, or to study the species.

Depending on how the situation unfolds, a more pragmatic response might be necessary.

Keeping in mind, that under these values, individuals and organizations who are capable of reason are held to their actions regardless of species or race. Any sentient being who makes choices must deal with the consequences.

Underground bunkers. Kept alive and well but to be used as hostages should they return to invade again. If negotiations are possible they could be a useful bargaining chip seeing as we cannot stand up to them militarily when they are in full force.

Rebuild, try to improve our defences, hope for the best. If they do blow us up to kingdom come we'll take the colonists with us.

sentience doesn't mean what I think you think it does... you should be saying sapient or sophont... sentience refers to the capacity to feel sensations, such as pain; thus, most animals are sentient.
