Um, I assumed it was because the others don't have nuclear reactors where their hearts should be...
Well James Rhodes (War Machine) used one of the suits without a core reactor. So it seems like it's still viable.
OT: I am really looking forward to this movie. Although I will be disappointed if they focus too much on Stark, he is a hilarious character so I think I can live with it. Hopefully though it has a massive run time and does all the characters justice.

Also, as others have said, the times are off. Not that it matters that much, just ignore Bob's timestamps and go scene by scene. It's not that confusing.

I know you said not to ask this question but:

"Why hasn't Tony Stark built wearable suits of flying armor for the non-flying Avengers."

Not that it's a plot hole or continuity problem- but because that just sounds so damn FUN!

Good walkthrough of the trailer, though I consider it a little odd that you talked about how strange it is to have an archer and a martial artist, then immediately said not to be a party-pooper.

Bows are also still extremely powerful, though admittedly sometimes outdated, weapons (especially for stealth).

OT: loved the trailer review, can't wait for this movie.

Bob,

I'm going to disagree with you on Loki not being the only villain. Let me lay it out for you on how I feel it is going to go. I acknowledge I'm still only guessing as well.

Loki gets arrested on purpose, basically so he can steal the cosmic cube. When everyone is away, he retrieves his weapon and the cube, and uses it to escape. The thing(s) in the sky everyone is looking at probably isn't Loki himself, but perhaps something Loki had pretty much ready to go except for the missing Cosmic Cube.

I mean, think about it, could SHIELD really take Loki down without the help of anyone in the Avengers? The scene looks like it takes place before the team is all assembled and basically deciding if they'll even join together in the first place, so I don't think they were the ones to take him down.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Joss Whedon is a perfect pick for this. Read the first 4 Astonishing X-Men graphic novels if you don't believe the stats. Ord of the Breakworld was simple, powerful and also excellently written/murderous.

Absolutely. Whedon´s x-men run should be the blueprint to its movie franchise. If the Avengers turn out half as good as those comics i´ll be a happy man. The line "I really like beer" alone makes it worthwhile.

Counter point: War Machine

Damn, Ninja'ed

On topic: I need a 24-style countdown clock for this movie...

You know I am somewhat surprised that Bob didn't seem to bring up Hawk-eye's bow which looked really flimsy as he unfolded it in the trailer. A hero who's main weapon is that should probably have a really cool meaty-looking bow shouldn't he?

I dunno maybe its just me? still an awesome trailer.

The problem is Bob that the movie will wind up being about Iron Man or at least that is who everyone will remember because Robert Downy Jr./Iron Man is so head-and-shoulders above the rest of the cast he'll steal the show anytime Black Widow isn't on-screen.

Clark Gregg as SHIELD Agent Coulson, so far THE breakout supporting character of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (and soon the ANIMATED Universe, too.) Do people know he's also a director? He made Choke. You should see it.
I've always found his role in the Marvel universe more entertaining due to the fact he was also the goto "FBI Agent" in the West Wing. Easily imagine him getting a sideways promotion to SHIELD.

Looking foward to this. So far all the Marvel films have either made me like a character I didn't know about (Thor) or sold me on something I thought would end up being really stupid (Captain America). Also, Whedon's strength at handling ensembles well in his shows gives me greater confidence in this then his dialogue.

Gasoline explosions and flipping cars.
I swear, CG studios must have a keyboard macro for "and then a car flips end-over-end" by this point. I think the Conan movie had a freaking carriage flip end-over-end.

Hello, SFX departments: we are no longer impressed. Find something else to do, please.

Black Widow is cool - you can tell, because she doesn't look at the explosion. A shamelessly gratuitous "smoking-hot-action-girl" shot. I have no objection to this.
I'm waiting for the movie where someone is decapitated by a piece of shrapnel or crushed by a falling piece of concrete because they weren't looking at the explosion.

But, yeah... I'd probably pony up for a movie of nothing but Johansson in a black jumpsuit doing nifty acrobatic takedowns on henchmen.

I'm really curious as to the context of this scene - the outfit is preserved like a museum piece, as in "this is Captain America's gear;" but it's NOT his actual gear (it can't be, he was wearing said gear when he was frozen)
I agree it's probably not meant to be his original gear, but

a) we don't know how long he was held, unconscious, and

b) are we really sure that he only had one suit? Must have had to do laundry at some point.

Just a tiny quibble.

Um... incidentally, why has nobody said "Avengers Assemble!" yet?
Yeah, I've wondered this, too. Surely they know this is the tag-line every geek is waiting for.

Looking at the bigger picture, is anyone kinda surprised that the avengers, i have to say it, the second most well known superhero team is getting a movie before the most well known superhero team, the justice league? i mean i know that DC would love to put out a movie for all its big IPs and then make a justice league movie. Is it weird that even though everyone knows about the justice league DC can't make a decent movie for anyone who isn't a pyschopath in a batsuit fighting other pyschopaths?

personally speaking i didn't know about the avengers until i really started getting into comics. I find it odd that with all the various incarnations of justice league for TV that isn't getting a big screen adaptation first.

Still Avengers is looking like it's gonna be awesome.
My theory is that the justice league's villains would have to be covered in kryptonite, which would be rather expensive for the prop department, rendering the movie financially nonviable. That will continue to be my theory forever, no matter how many intelligent people tell me it's a stupid theory.

Yes, because DC heroes all have the silly weaknesses like a magic rock, the color yellow, or hands behind their back. Marvel's heroes on the other hand, all have personality flaws. Bruce - short temper. Thor - young and cocky. Cap - too trusting. Stark - cocky, drinking womanizer, fratboy. That's what makes marvel films more engaging. They don't depend solely on FX shots.

Well, Stark made his first Arc Reactor IN A CAVE, WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS, so it's not like they're hard for him to make.

Bob, I approve of the Lonely Island reference.
Which was slowly killing him until he made the improved one in the second Iron-man film... And it wan't scraps so much as parts from all his weapons that were sold on the black market.
He may be only saying it that way because that's Jeff Bridges' exact line in Iron Man.

To some engineer who failed to replicate the Arc reactor for him: "What do you mean it can't be done? Tony Stark made it IN A CAVE, WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!"
Dangit, where's the upvote button on this forum?

...

And I can't downvote the forum for not having one either! I've been spoiled by reddit.

I love you, Bob; but you sound like those same nerd purists who got mad over the Dragon Age trailer. Hard Rock is not the devil and as I have been hearing the same fucking string compositions and arrangements for epic movies for as long as I have been alive. I really wish that it would die or at least evolve. I think that things are moving in the right direction when composers start using more electronic sounds in movies. Even heavy acoustic rock is better than an orchestral score, to me. I have nothing against the symphony, I play a Viola from time to time, I just think that you are falling into the same love of cliches that you fault others for from time to time.

"Also: Whoever's been cutting these at Disney/Marvel? Look, I like Tool and Nine Inch Nails as much as anybody; but it's time to cool it with the 90s Metal motif for all these trailers. This is the first continuity-driven superhero-epic, guys... let's get something orchestral going on with the proper amount of portent and gravitas already."

My thoughts exactly Bob. I was hoping for more from the first trailer, something more epic. Not to say that I'm not happy with what I've been given! Of course not! I'm just sayin', I'd like something a bit more epic for the next trailer that rolls around.
