Just because it worked well for the wow-like clone Rift, lets all jump on the Wow-bashing band wagon.
It didn't work well. That marketing didn't influence a single damn person.

The people who went to play rift were going to try it regardless.

Their marketing team should be beaten with rods for how terrible their marketing campaign
was.
That is not true. Case in point, it worked on me, I was like if they have the cojones to directly take on WoW, then it might be worth trying, not saying I'm going to stop playing WoW for Rift.

1 who still likes Star wars enough for a MMORPG, why not make Battlefront3. 2 WOW is like Big Brother from the book 1984 it CAN'T be beat. 3 What has happened to Bioware! I used to like them, then they banned ppl for calling EA the devil, streamlined DA2, filled ME2 with gaping plot holes, and now their name calling their competition. That makes me a sad panda
Query: Why is streamlining DA2 a bad thing? Also, what gaping plot holes in ME2?

Good god. Reminds me of when my dad said he only watches Fox because they don't praise Obama (He doesn't like any president who doesn't circle jerk to the Military).

It doesn't take Cojones to stand up to wow every mmo since Wow became popular has tried it.

But whatever. If you are happy with your choice then I am happy for you :p. I'm just somewhat disappointed that it worked on anyone. This sort of shitty marketing should die in a fire.

I don't want to know what a game isn't...I want to know what it is. There are trillions of things a game isn't, listing them out for me is moronic.

"We aren't in Azeroth anymore." No...no we are not. We also aren't in Disney World, Mario World, Mars, or the Truck Stop on 5th and Pike.

I don't really see too much "bashing." They're trying to say they focus more on the narrative, which shouldn't be news to anyone that has even the remotest interest in TOR.

EA has fast become the "Jerry Springer Show" of gaming. I am curious how this game will impact Guild Wars 2 and World Of Warcraft, but they will be hard pressed to topple the WoW juggernaut anytime soon. Even if Blizzard subscribers defect, the market is about to become pretty diluted for a while, and it's not like we've got more time and disposable income these days (at least not a lot of us).

PR grenades? NOt really, just common sense.
Every WoW clone has failed miserably so of course he will try to argue that SW:TOR is anything but otherwise the investees would be lining up to lynch him.

First, from the article I don't really see EA 'bashing' WoW here... they're not saying it sucks they're saying they can compete with it.

Asides from that, with all this talk about about trying to 'beat' WoW' and take over it's player base, doesn't anyone put any thought into trying to attract non-WoW players? Personally RPG's have always been my favourite genre of games, and they have been for 20 years. Of course everyone's heard about WoW and the free trial is always there to bait you in, but when I tried out it didn't take long to determine that for my own personal tastes the game was shit. I'm not going to trash it any further, if other people love it then that's great for them. But what I'm saying is yes WoW has like 10-12 million subscribers which is damn impressive, but hasn't anyone tried to count how many gamers like myself don't actually like it? Wouldn't it be smarter to market it to us rather than try to draw away from WoW current fanbase?

Would it be in poor taste to suggest that WoW is too big to fail? Or has EA already decided to use that line in it's tongue-in-cheek ad campaign?

Anyone know how Rift has done? It tried the "better than WoW" marketing plan too.

I'm guessing not too well since I've heard little to nothing about it since launch day.

I think at this point it doesn't really matter what you say about WoW, it is what it is. Everyone already knows the flaws and sure, in the first few months you might make a dent in WoW's 12 mil subs, but unless you have a good game to back it up they're all going to go back after a while anyways.

Well, World or Warcraft has resulted in people neglecting their own children to death... so no, Old Republci isn't going beat it without some kind of subliminal brainwashing thing going on.

This thread contains the first negative feedback I've seen about ToR. Sure, it's borrowing heavily from WoW. Just remember that before Halo there was no such thing as regenerating health, and now it's in almost every single new FPS. They have to walk in the giant footprints before them because straying from the path is not a wise thing to do in terms of a large-scale business venture.

Anyway, what's wrong with it? It's set in a rich, well-fortified sci-fi universe, and sci-fi MMO's in general are scarce as it is. It panders to WoW, yes, but from all reports it does it justice. BioWare have never been a poor developer.
If you're truly that bored of WoW-style MMO's look elsewhere, sure. If you fancy similar gameplay with new substance (i.e; every FPS after CoD:MW, Halo and Half-life 2 and practically every RTS post-Starcraft and C&C) then it's worth a crack, as all reports from shows have been positive.

Also, for the people worried about the endgame - worry about that once you get there.

If they are going to bash WoW, they should at least have the decency to be funny. I mean it worked for Bulletstorm, I think? I laughed.

Man, I'm really starting to worry about Bioware. Ever since they joined EA their design philosophy has been spiraling downward into "copy what works elsewhere," and in MMOs especially, that's not a sustainable strategy. Copying WoW is a surefire way to get forgotten.

I've been excited for TOR because it looks like the first MMO that's oriented completely around narrative. It's obviously not for everyone, but it does something that WoW definitely doesn't, which means it could survive. They should be playing up how this game is aimed at an entirely different demographic of gamers from WoW, and instead...this.

If this game tanks, the Bioware that gave us Mass Effect and Dragon Age could permanently collapse. I just want them to go back to doing their own thing.

Maybe...just maybe...lots of people who play Old Republic...will play WoW too! Amazing thing about games, you can play more than just one, even in the same genre!
Best way to "beat" WoW is just be different enough that its variation will be welcomed.

I dearly wish I could say I disagreed with you. I really, undeniably do.

But, in the deepest confines of my shriveled, black heart, I can't help but bitterly admit that SWTOR is going to be an abject and total failure...

*Sigh*... Well... there's always that Night Elf rogue for me to come crawling back to...
