I understand keeping violent or obscene materials out of the hands of children. Good concept, works fine with movies.

But like movies, why aren't games given a progressive and universal scale. PG, PG-13, R, etc. Oh wait, they DO have a scale like that for video games. Why not use it? We could even adjust the higher-end ratings to match the movie industry. I've never been a big fan of the "Mature" label anyway. Since when is R-rated cinema expected to be "Mature." Swap out M for R in the video game scale and presto, you've got a winner. Familiar and universal

If a store is allowed to sell Rated R movies (or the equivalent rating up in BC) than I see no reason why they shouldn't be allowed to sell violent or obscene games.

Goddammit, because we really need more of this drivel to make BC look bad. We were doing a fine job of that without this nonsense.

As a resident of BC, I can only offer an emphatic "fuck you" to this organization.

Geez, she is SO wrong about this.

Everybody knows that all the good games come out during the holiday season! Summer's like, the dead spot for gaming.

You know what has been proven to cause a larger reaction in children... movies. But you won't go after them will you?

Personally, I think it's their logo.

Seriously, have you ever seen a logo that pretentious before in your life? With the rose and everything? Apparently being a "Key Woman Educator" gives you license to be completely stuck up your own ass.

We already have Godwin's Law. We need a Law dealing with stupid talking heads and politicians pulling the "Won't someone think of the children!" card. Personally, I think anyone playing that card needs to be slapped upside the head, twice. Once, for using such a blatant and transparent arguement. Then, a second time, just for wasting my time.

"As summer vacation has started, children are particularly at risk for increased exposure to sunlight," the letter says. "Significant research has been conducted to determine the effects of sunlight and many of the results indicate short-term and even long-term behavioral and attitudinal changes in those who play outdoors."

"In the same way that we protect our children from secondhand smoke, we believe there would be a benefit from a ban on sunlight wherever children under 16 may be present and that exposure to same should be tightly controlled," it continues. "Please help families keep their children from the negative effects of solar exposure by legislating strict rules."
Corrected for stupidity. And cancer.

Joseph Stalin Loved american cowboy films.
That means people who like cowboy films are Communist Dictators?
Hitler loved Wagner, & classical music, and ADORED Chocolate cake.
Does that mean lovers of classical music are Nazis?
Does that mean lovers of wagner are nazis?
Does that mean lovers of chocolate cake are nazi? hmm?
Hitler liked dogs. he was evil. people who like dogs are evil.

This is a necessary thing, if they had implemented this when I was a kid, I wouldn't have lung cancer from second-hand gaming.

Wait... something's off about this.

Apparently, Captacha is telling me that this comment is "from Edivvna".

In the words of Miyagi, "there are no bad students. Only bad teacher"

Or in more fitting words, there are no bad kids, only bad parents.

When a kid becomes violent, it's not the games fault, it's the dumbass parents who let games raise their children.

What's with their name and logo? The 'DKG' group which stands for Delta Kappa Gamma? As in, the greek letters for D, K and G (capital K is even the same as capital Kappa)? That's all Delta Kappa and Gamma mean, just names for letters. Dilbert's 'The TTP Project', where TTP stood for The TTP Project made more sense than this.

She said in video arcades. What arcades are there left?! And now, the ones that are left are really expensive. $1 to play a game of House of the Dead!?

OT: This is bull. It's going to get shot down just like all the other ones.

Yeah, I don't think anyone should take this seriously. I mean, "sexually explicit video games?" What the hell are those? Because I don't think I've played a single one in my life. What about you guys?

...Also to those who are for heavier government regulation. Almost impossible for children to get means almost impossible for everyone to get. And all the gov. would have to do would be to label the game as "porn," and then practically no one will play it. Because of this, developers will shy away from such violent games. And yeah, I suppose it wouldn't be a HUGE loss if the next COD or Gears game isn't made...but what about thought-provoking, artistic games that just happen to be violent? Or hell, ones that use violence to explore complex themes? They won't get made.

And that? That's censorship.

Ouch. Statistics Canada couldn't have had better timing.

----
Crime rate falls to lowest level since 1973
Canada's crime rate is the lowest in nearly 40 years, according to Statistics Canada, as the volume of crime dropped five per cent in 2010 from the year before.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/story/2011/07/21/crime-rates.html
----

Hmm.. 1973, where have I heard that year before. Oh, right, that's pretty much right around when videogames moved from giant mainframe computers to arcades and, shortly, home consoles. Not surprisingly, something doesn't seem to be adding up here.

I see both sides of the argument and can't help but wonder, could this problem be solved with developers actually just making better games and not having to rely on over the top violence? I'll play Mass Effect over Gears of War any day (although Mass Effect got the same rating, albiet for different reasons). Why? Less violence and more interesting writing. Gore isn't really in it. And I think the game is more fun for it.
