Game Informer just reported that Skyrim will run on a new engine. [http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/12/12/elder-scrolls-v-will-use-new-engine.aspx] Personally, I think this is the biggest step they could ever make with an Elder Scrolls game, and will probably help the game sell like sex in a can.

My wishlist for the new engine:
1) Facial/body animations that are less wooden
2) The ability to have conversations without freezing the game.
3) LESS PROGRAM CRASHES.

Well, that's not very comforting to know.

They still haven't finished fixing the last one! And it's been around for half a decade.

This.

OT: Good, I only ever got to play TES IV: Oblivion, and I loved it, but the above mentioned reasons were some problems with it...

Does this mean there won't be 1328748 bugs?
Wow, wow, its still Bethesda so there will probably still be around 1328745. They've caught 3 of them, but just ignored the rest. By the time they get to Elder Scrolls 442915 (I dunno what that is in Roman numerals, and can't be bothered finding out) all the bugs should be gone.

It's not their engine to fix. Never was. They actually used a bunch of third party programs, so they don't really get to make changes to any of them, they just try to make them play nice.

<.< Does no one read the copyright screen when they can't skip it?

I suppose it makes sense. The move from Daggerfall to Morrowind included incorporating the Gamebryo engine. Every two games, a new engine?

I never had really bad bugs with oblivion but I really hope that the new engine has some good facial expressions, so that it feels like I'm talking to a human and no to a tree that can talk. Also the movements of the bodies could be a bit better.

Why arnt they using ID Tech 5 i wonder?
They will be using idTech5. The tweet in question just says the engine is 'brand new' and 'spectacular'... idTech5 is 'brand new' - no title using the engine has hit the shelves yet. Spectacular? Probably, as idTech5 is one of Carmack's brainchildren.

Bethesda would have to be massively stupid to go off and build or license a completely different engine when they own id Software, who are legends when it comes to making game engines, and only games published by Bethesda have access to idTech5.

No one can license out Gamebryo now (fucking yay!) as it's creators/licensors were snuffed out when Krome carked it in October.

Actually, the sad thing to come out of Krome dying in the arse was it seems to have killed off Australia's oldest game dev studio Melbourne House.

An engine alone does not a good game make.
I honestly found TES IV inferior to good ol' Morrowind, and it's older engine.

Hopefully.

OT: Well, thats one major step forward.

Next step, hiring more then 8 voice actors for all of the NPC's in the game.

After that, they can move on to putting in a diagonal walking/running animation.

Yeah pretty much...

wait a minute...

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE HYPNOTOAD!?

OP: This could go either way, the new engine could be great, better animations, better textures etc. I could also be even buggier because it's brand new.

So they FINALLY dumped Gamebryo? Maybe Bethesda games will be (more) stable now! HALLELUJAH!

Maybe I'll actually be able to get into the Elder Scrolls franchise now... this merits further thought and attention.
