Well, that's not very comforting to know.

They still haven't finished fixing the last one! And it's been around for half a decade.
It's not their engine to fix. Never was. They actually used a bunch of third party programs, so they don't really get to make changes to any of them, they just try to make them play nice.

<.< Does no one read the copyright screen when they can't skip it?
Copywrite?

I never copy anyone's homework!
I lol'd.

OT: I'm pretty excited with this news, though I never really had any problem with the Gamebryo engine. Actually, my main worry is that its not TOO different. I trust Bethesda to still make it feel like and Elder Scrolls game, but I don't know, Gamebryo was a big part of that for me.

Hrm, interesting.

I remember reading an interview a while back, and someone asked a dev or representative if they will be using ID Tech 5 in a new Elder Scrolls, and the guy basically said no. Saying that the engine is more suited to smaller scale games.

So it's going to be smaller then. It's almost a requirement actually, if it's new tech, because consoles will absolutely not be able to handle it on any large scale.

Why arnt they using ID Tech 5 i wonder?
They will be using idTech5. The tweet in question just says the engine is 'brand new' and 'spectacular'... idTech5 is 'brand new' - no title using the engine has hit the shelves yet. Spectacular? Probably, as idTech5 is one of Carmack's brainchildren.

Bethesda would have to be massively stupid to go off and build or license a completely different engine when they own id Software, who are legends when it comes to making game engines, and only games published by Bethesda have access to idTech5.
I hope to god your right. The idea of some of the finest RPG makers working with that engine sounds beyond amazing!
As far as TES is concerned I hope you're wrong, remember that Tech 5's megatextures make modding an arduous, practically unfeasible undertaking. To go from the marvelous post-release modlife of III and IV to next to nothing would be a blow to the community, though it's pretty safe to expect a sweet vanilla experience.

I'm glad. Technological advancement is great.

Never had any trouble with the old engine, though. Honest.

I would be shocked it they weren't using a new engine. I mean, they've had enough time to build one since Fallout 3 and that engine is OOOOOOOOOOOLD now. I'm really looking forward to it, I just hope that they drop the retarded levelling system from Oblivion and take a turn in the Morrowind direction.... Don't ask me what that means. Morrowind just had a better feel to it all around that I can't quite put my finger one. I mean, it is an ugly game these days and combat, magic and stealth all sucked in retrospect. I definitely hope that they get some more interesting environments in Skyrim other than Meadow #1, Meadow #2, Mountain and Swamp-like area.

Exactly. The old engine was fine. It was a bit shaky, but it's failings were never more than an inconvenience, for me at least. Nonetheless I'm happy to see that they're going to improve on it. Maybe they'll get out of the uncanny valley finally.

great, now if only they could confirm that the gameplay won't be garbage
It's gonna do well enough without your money. Don't buy it.

Given that im a console gamer and the "vanilla" experience is all im interested in then that wouldnt bother me at all. I would hope that mod support it an afterthought in almost all games developed these days.
Oh alright you've convinced me, consoles are all that matter anymore anyway, right⸮

*EDIT* Pardon, that was off-topic and snarky, I'm sorry. :)

Just in case anyone is interested, this is a quote from Bethesda's twitter account-

Seeing lots of speculation about #tesv game engine. It's brand new... and it's spectacular!
I was expecting them to use Id 5, but if they can do anything better than Gamebryo, it works for me.

As long as:

Your guy/gal can no longer slide diagonally. This ruined 3rd person for me in both Fallout and Oblivion.

Combat is fixed. This beggar I am fighting should not take 3 or 4 hits of a sword to kill.

Your character's animation no longer is frozen when you're in mid-jump. This also ruined 3rd person for me.

I want the problems fixed before Oblviion. No, that was typed correctly, I did not make a typo. I wish for Bethesda to go back in time and fix these problems.

Regardless: Woo! Skyrim!

This so much. And at the VERY least, they could've learned from Oblivion and tried to improve the engine the slightest bit before releasing Fallout 3/NV.

It seems we need a little more clarification before we can be sure of the 'new' engine's exact origins. All the information we have received so far is vague and incomplete.

So instead of them, say, bringing mod support to consoles you'd rather have them not implement a feature at all? Or; you'd rather them not implement a feature for PC because you're unable to use it on your console?

As for the thread itself: If they truly are changing to a different engine Skyrim may actually be worth buying. Had they stuck with the Gamebryo engine, and all it's issues, I more then likely would not purchase the game.
