Wait, so the article boils down to: "Rumour is disproven, but that's no reason not to mock the emo-kids"?

Le sigh, Escapist. Le sigh indeed.

Gosh, such hostility towards us people with emo fringes. For starters, those who say our hair is greasy and filthy and so on, I care for my hair more than most girls care for theirs. I shampoo and condition it everyday with moisturizing shampoo and repairing conditioner to keep it soft and clean. I straighten it nearly everyday since my hair is curly, and I get it done at a salon every 1-2 months. There has also been countless research that shows that it does not do any damage to someones eyes. The only evidence they have is if someone is like under 7 and their eyes are still developing can it do some harm in extreme cases, and that in worst case scenario means they'll need glasses/contacts.

And for people assuming all emo's are hardcore wrist cutting angsty rebels, we're not, typically people who act like that are posers doing it for attention. I like the style, I love the music, and emo is short for (and who would've known this) emotional. We're caring people(I have a lot of friends who have the emo style too), and a helluva lot less judgmental then some of the responses I just read here.

/end rant
yea i think we all just want to pick on you emo's to be honest...with your hair and your shite music...

Oh think of the children! Ban it now! Emo is a suicide cult! (No, really: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-566481/Why-child-safe-sinister-cult-emo.html).

Journalism at it's finest!

The hair can get into your eye and scratch your iris. As for all this hate towards emos. Yeah a lot of them have gone from its originally punk roots. I have met the attention seeking emos. I have also met the emos that are in it just for the look. I do find some emos very attractive and married one.

She has one of the kindest sweetest souls I've ever seen. She calls herself punk/emo. I really don't see why so many people see only the negative people in emo. Yes its not exactly the most subtle style out there, but what does it matter. If you like it do it.

I'll respect your right to wear a haircut that makes it look like someone dunked your head in a toilet and flushed if you respect my right to laugh at it.

Strip the doctor of his licence to practice. Dumb is dumb. Bad medical advice from someone we're supposed to trust to dispense good medical advice, is bad medical advice. I'll be nice, I'll assume the chap's gone senile and isn't intentionally misleading the public. That said, strip his licence to practice.

Oh no! Kids are letting their hair grow long and looking sad! THIS HAS NEVER HAPPENE... Oh wait, beatniks. We done yet? Seriously? WTF is wrong with this planet. Grow up already. And I don't mean the beat... the Emo kids, their kids growing up. What's everyone else's excuse? Bugger all.

Rant out...

Always thought it looked cute or something so it's nice it is without hazards.

One of the few haircuts I do think is incredibly tacky is the crew-cut that looks like a coaster.

I find it amusing that people who probably spend the majority of their time staring at a computer screen are mocking emos for supposedly detrimenting their eyesight.

Masturbation.

I was running with the cliche that we are all gamers who like to touch ourselves.

Because basically anytime someone says "about to go blind" I'm reminded of that lie from my childhood. Oh conservative education.

What annoys me is that most people get their opinion of the Emo community by reading My Immortal. This would be like getting an opinion of gamers by reading Mazes and Monsters.

Emos still a thing?
It's actually been around for decades before it caught on to the mainstream. You wound up with a lot of people embracing it for attention, so everything that made it what it was, was lost. Similar to what happened with Punk.

The Emo, the quintessential black clad poet who is ultra-sensitive and spouts depressing stuff while everyone becomes touched and falls for the guy (or girl) has been around as a stereotype of sorts since the Renassance, and the modern version sort of spun off of Beatnik culture from decades ago... and well, we see what happened.

I do not think it's one that will ever go away, largely because inspirational sources really are timeless. Seeing the mainstream lose interest wouldn't be bad however.

Speaking for myself, I'm not surprised this was quickly debunked. I've known a lot of people who have worn hair down over their eyes (of both genders) in a number of styles, and none of them had problems. When the source is a doctor in Tasmania of all places, that's a reason to be suspicious, with no offense to anyone from there, while I'm sure it can produce competant physicians, I haven't ever exactly heard of it being at the cutting edge of medical research. While discoveries come from unlikely places all the time, you'd think something this relatively obvious would have been all over the rest of the world, given how desperate guys from places like Yale are to find any excuse to get something in print.
