Ender's Game Actor Could Be New Spider-Man

Anonymous sources have said that Asa Butterfield may be Marvel's choice to be the next Spider-Man.

One of the bigger movie announcements of 2014 was the reveal that Sony and Marvel <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/139777-Marvel-and-Sony-Confirm-That-Spider-Mans-Joining-the-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe>had finally hammered out the rights issues that had been keeping Spider-Man out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With the beloved character ready to make <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/moviesandtv/columns/moviebob/12983-Spider-Man-Belongs-In-The-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe>his MCU debut however, the big question on everyone's mind was who would be cast to play him. If recent reports can be believed, that question might finally have an answer.

While neither Marvel or Sony have confirmed it, industry sources have indicated that actor Asa Butterfield may have clinched the role. Butterfield's own representatives declined to comment on the rumor. That said, unnamed sources said that "Marvel has liked him since day one" and were leaning heavily toward him for the role. Born in 1997, Butterfield has already starred in several films including Hugo, Ender's Game and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. Previous rumors also had actors Tom Holland, Nat Wolff, Liam James and Timothee Chalamet up for the role.

Speaking personally, I don't think Butterfield would be a terrible choice. He's a good enough actor to pull off the role and he definitely looks the part of a young Peter Parker when he's wearing a pair of glasses. That being the case, Butterfield's casting would pretty much kill all hope of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comicsandcosplay/12971-Why-the-Marvel-Cinematic-Universe-Doesn-t-Need-Peter-Parker>Miles Morales being the new Spider-Man, something that I and many other fans had been hoping for. What do you think? Will Butterfield be good in the role? Or is there another young actor that you'd prefer to see strapping on web-shooters?

I think that would actually be a great choice. The kid is good, and has the right look.

One complaint: too young.

And that's not the actor's fault, of course. I'm just hoping that the MCU Spider-Man would be the older, college-age/young adult Spider-Man. I'm tired of the high school version.

...Given that he's 18?

Well, he certainly looks nerdy enough, I suppose, which Garfield really didn't.

I find it strange how finding an actor to play Peter Parker has kinda devolved over time.

"Hey, I have an idea! Let's get the guy who knocked 'Pleasantville' and 'The Cider House Rules' out of the fucking park!"
"Hey, I have an idea! Let's get the guy who was in 'The Social Network'. No, not that guy. The other one."
"Hey, I have an idea! Let's get the guy who was okay in 'Hugo' and eh in 'Ender's Game'."

I'm looking forward to the webslinger's next adventure, where we found out he's being played by an extra from "Misfits" or some shit like that.

But Ender's Game wasn't that good and the little kid isn't that good.
I mean you don't have to be amazing to play a super hero, but I'm not convinced.

It was already announced that Spider-Man in the MCU was going to be a high-school aged Peter Parker, like two/three weeks ago. Anyone wishing for a college aged Parker or Miles Morales isn't paying attention.

He looks A LOT younger than 18 in that picture.

Hiring a teenager to play a teenager? Previously unthinkable stuff in movies. I can see this either going really well because he nails the role, but more importantly the nerdy part of Peter Parker that Raimi Spider-Man got and TASM completely missed. I can also see it going horribly wrong because I struggle to see him doing the wisecracking that Spider-Man does, nor does he look like he'd fit the suit that much. I know TASM had a stick thin Spider-Man, I just don't know how Butterfield would look in the suit and that's a big part of it.

The complaint here is not Butterfield's age but the fact that Marvel wants to do a movie about a high-school aged Peter Parker, which remnant_phoenix is not thrilled about. With the recent movies and cartoons, that's understandable. It's an opinion I share, but for different reasons. I think a film about a more experienced Spider-Man who's been around for several years is easier to work into the MCU. Asa Butterfield could actually be a good choice if Marvel Studios were to go that route.

Whatever happens, we can all probably agree that the next Spider-Man movie will likely be better than the last one.

I swear the forerunners for Spiderman are the whitest, most baby faced actors Marvel could find. Out of any casting choice they have ever made the pool for Spiderman are the weakest casting they have made so far.

Maybe in movie terms, where it seems to be routine to cast much older actors. When was the last time you saw a group of college freshmen? They look like kids, mostly.

May I ask why? With the exception of the two Amazing Spider-Man films we had a high school age Peter Parker for about five minutes in the first Raimi film. He's been out of High School for decades in the comics as well. I mean I wouldn't object to an older Spider-Man if only because I'm damn near 30 so I haven't related much to teenagers lately, but it's not like we've had an abundance of High School depictions of him on screen or in comics. And if we're going to be talking about establishing him in the MCU it makes sense to have him only recently becoming active which means having him High School age I'm afraid.

Urgh, hated enders game. Mostly cuz he was an annoying little turd throughout. Personally I'd like to see a grown up Peter, like we don't need another spidey origins story, we really really don't

I guess I'll be the dissenting voice here in saying that I think that Spider-Man needs to be teen Parker in order to insert himself into the MCU smoothly. I don't want them to dwell on the origin itself, because I think we get the gist of that by now, but he does kind of need to be have only gotten his powers post-Avengers(and probably post-Ultron) in order to make sense within the established timeline.

Besides, give him a few movies, then kill him off. Then we can bring in Morales the way he should be(not just out of the blue for no other reason than people like him).

Also, isn't he first coming in during Cap: Civil War? We probably won't see him as high school parker for long if at all if that's the case.

I didn't bother with Ender's game but I thought the kid had real potential in Boy in the Striped Pyjamas sooo.

I'm open. Anyone that's not Tobey McGuire is a step up in my book.

Why couldn't be be Miles Morales? The important thing is the quality of the actor, not their skin color.

Wait... Nat Wolff? From The Naked Brothers Band? Interesting...

Other than that, I'm still indifferent to the potential choosing of Asa Butterfield, though...
