This is a good idea, Yahtzee. Whether it'd work as a game or not I don't know, but it's a damn creative plan. (Wish I'd come up with it.)

Someone pay Yahtzee for this idea and make the damn game! the myth itself makes for compelling gameplay the way Yahtzee described it!

I have a question.
Why do you seem to have a problem with men who are strong looking strong? Seriously you bring it up in almost every review.
You can't have climbing trees, lifting heavy things and fighting giant robots as regular parts of your life style without gaining some serious muscle mass.

This seems especially ironic to me seen as how you so openly object to wimpy looking teen aged boys swinging giant buster swords in JRPGs.

that was actually way more faithful to the source material. Heck, you could even have the pig and the water sprite as aliens

Journey to the west has a rather famous adaptation in the form of the original Dragon Ball (not the Z version, which seemed to owe more to Superman), with Sun Wakong/Son Goku being a strong, half ape martial artist with a magic flying cloud. Goku wasn´t enslaved as much as he was cheated into escorting Bulma but it was the same.
Still light years from this game, it seems...

Interesting premise. But I think when you said "explore the universe" and "all sorts of interesting game play" you made game producers, artists, and a experienced programmers have a heart attack.

But then I stopped to think about it. I haven't read Journey into the West either, nor did I go read the wiki link, decided to read your game premise on it's own merits. Perhaps as episodic game play, your idea could work. Corners would still need to be cut for art production and engine design but, currently, people don't expect pure AAA quality from an episodic, DLC-style, game. So you could actually focus new and innovative game play each episode, as well as interesting plot.

Still sounds ambitious though.

Also I'd hope Tripitaka would be useful, being a repository for a large amount of Earth's futuristic knowledge, rather than a huge escort quest. I hate escort quests.

It makes me wonder why creators do this. Adapt works when they don't intend to follow the source, I mean. In that case, why not just create their own IP? Of course I already know the answer to that question: because new IP doesn't have "brand identity" and wouldn't sell as well. But honestly, how many die-hard fans of Journey to the West were waiting on tenterhooks for the videogame adaptation? Even if there were a few, I would put money on them only knowing of it through the TV show.
Generic sells better than "deep". "Slutty" sells better than "cute".
It's the same reason why there are more McDonald's than, say, Culver's in America.

Culver's has McDonald's absolutely beaten in quality for price. No questioning it. You can't even "opinion" your way out of this one without being extraordinarily stupid or in self-denial. The quality of products and service is on average, a huge margin.
Yet, McDonald's will forever be the Burger Titan, while everyone else will eventually go bankrupt, crumble, or get bought out.

After getting caught up on the movies from this last summer, it's obvious that terrible generic flashy shit will trump anything with creative ambition every time.

Video games are not exempt from this; expect the stagnation to spread.

If you want to see a recent example of an adaptation done right (at least for the story and characters) check out Infinite Space for the DS. Don't let the intro fool you; the story definitely has its dark and violent moments, many of which are appropriate.

I would play that game you have described that isn't the game that was already made. This sentence makes sense.

Pants.

Holy shit I'd play the hell out of that fictional game. Nice design Yahtzee!

Edit: Whoa, that scared me for a second. Some one said almost the same words as me, and they were banned. His banning came from another thread though :p

So I read the Wiki article... and Journey to the West actually sounds really fun! It's funny to think that a book written in 1590 in China has so many similarities to Western works made today.

Also, that was more of a backstory to a game than an actual game, but 'Zelda-y' is an adequate explanation of how the game works to me.

Here's some more good ideas:

Monkey teams up with a newt in a fez to rescue the large-bosomed Tripitaka from mummies.

Tripitaka (with large bosoms) journeys through time to pay for a breast enlargement.

Monkey and Tripitaka join a race of bosom people on their bosom armada to find a new bosom homeworld.

Bosoms melons milk factories busts funbags knockers ballistiques boobies jugs nipples jubblies stonking great tits

Weird. I can't think of any game that involves taking advantage of a robotic playable character in order to mess with the timeline like Yahtzee was talking about.

In fact, I can't really think of too many games that you play as a robot. Clank I guess? Glitch from Metal Arms? There could be some cool stuff done with that. And most lead characters don't have any personality or fleshy vulnerability anyways, so there's no loss!

Not bad but when you said flys with a cloud I was thinking DBZ. You think Trip would have been better as a guy?

Extra Punctuation: Enslaved As It Should Have Been

Yahtzee wonders why Ninja Theory based Enslaved on the Chinese novel Journey to the West if it was just going to add killer robots.

I think it rather interesting how you actually have much better plot ideas for games than people who get PAID to think up this shit. Id don't know about subroutine for obeidiance though. That might take away the personality and enter blind obeidiance into the question. Perhaps a shock collar or such would still work, but something time-set. Otherwise he's not going out of atonement for past sins, but because his brain is programmed to

Wonderful idea though
