I like how people are baffled as to why someone would hack into a game companies storage of passwords and emails. Oh, I don't know, maybe because they want to commit identity theft? How are people so stunned at this? Is it because it's just a game company? Should we not take this seriously just because of that?

On the one hand the hackers are supposedly trying to prove how vulnerable the internet is. On the other they're kinda right.

Sadly with computer security, there is always a hole in it. Anyone who understands the system can get around it. They aren't proving anything. They're just being stupid.

The Unreal Network stores a lot of data from games in development, I wouldn't be surprised if people found half of the Mass Effect code in there, along with some assets. Not to mention the lucrative info there is on there.

Also, it's is in the best interest of Epic to play like Sony. Unless absolutely necessary deny that the information was accessed. Don't forget, Sony had to deal with fans, Epic will have to deal with the legal departments of Activision and EA (and Ubisoft, and TakeTwo...) .

EDIT: Also, they would get a financial information on every company that used the Unreal Engine. And indy devs...the less said the better.

Mostly because developer sites don't hold any useful information. The only thing there is an account, a password and an email, not enough info to warrant hacking.

The only reason someone would do it is for shit & giggles. Let's be honest, if you were the CEO, how would you have reacted if last year someone from IT came to you and told you "Well sir, someone who has enough experience to hack into servers and web sites, may decide to do it just because he is bored, we should increase our spending on security several fold just to be sure, despite the fact that if they hack a more lucrative target, which they would be able to do, they will get more recognition, more information and the possibility for a monetary gain."?

Epic Games are the developers of the Unreal Engine, the most widely used gaming engine in the last few years. Mass Effect, Homefront and Mortal Kombat, for example, use it. The is also a free version, the Unreal Developer Kit, for indy games - Magicka uses the UDK.
Now Epic is directly handleling tech support for the engine. Meaning that if the guys at Bioware had issue with something, they would report to Epic - and Epic keeps logs and they most likely keep part of that code as well. Imagine if someone leaked the modified code for Mortal Kombat? Every single developer (indy or not) in the world could copy it(not exactly due to leagal stuff, but you get the idea).

Furthermore they receive a royalty for every copy sold, if hackers are able to get their hands on the financial history they can calculate how many copies every game on the list sold. Let's just say there is a really good reason why many companies don't release sales history.

Imagine what would happen if they hack Crytech (developers of Cry Engine, Crysis and Far Cry) - the Cry Engine is used not only by game companies, but by the US military for simulation purposes as well, lot's of lucrative information.
