Epic?

I played WoW for a while, and I never got too far into endgame content (did Onyxia, MC, ZG, AQ20, the first boss of BWL, and all of Karazhan), some bosses felt cool to kill. Most of them didn't really impress me though.

Cool kills: Ragnaros (watching his hammer fly through the air and crash into the lava was awesome) and first boss of BWL (honestly I can't remember his name, but having that gigantic chain of minions running in circles around the room was pretty epic).

My favorite epic gaming moments outside of WoW:
-The nuke going off in CoD4
-From Mass Effect: "The Alliance fleet is here... they're pulling back! They aren't helping!" or however they said it.
-Being abducted by aliens after beating Free Bird in GH2.
-The scene in Ryan's office in BioShock.
-The subway train in Splinter Cell 2.

What ticks me off is that there really aren't any TRULY epic moments out there. While the ones you've all mentioned are awesome, they're pre-made.
My dream is an MMO where players can get together and create epic moments that can never be replicated. Istvaan Shogaatsu's theft in EVE qualifies as epic for me, but imagine an MMO where you can get that kind of moment with hundreds or thousands of players. A massive vanguard breaking against a wall of shields, a three-hour siege, a starship battle consisting of hundreds of ships; why can't we have these kinds of things without instances?

My first time playing Planetside back in its heydays. There was a base nestled in amongst these hills and I was part of a huge Vanu force just pouring fire onto this base as we creeped down the hill slowly making headway. When I finally joined up with the main force after spawning in for the first time, I just sat there in awe watching our army unloaded vast swathes of blue energy weapon fire at the base while tracer fire from the entrenched Terran forces came screaming back at us.
RIP Planetside

Actually, people in Wow, and presumably other MMOs have arranged those themselves, they made 300-man raids or enemy cities, had massive, all-out wars, and so on.

Gotta love RTS games, their usual key ingredient is "EPIC!" - though if they did it wrong then it becomes "boring" - supreme commander has both o_O

The most epic moment of gaming I can recall is when Bohan, evil literally permeating from his armor, descends from a cliff to duel Nariko. The camera withdraws, the orchestra starts, and one epic battle begins.

Not to mention the final attack sequence against aforementioned opponent.

That word has lost all meaning for me. Every single game released that features a gun and/or sword is now automatically "epic". Seriously, is someone paying these guys to use that word in place of any other adjective? Don't even get me started on the company... worst. Name. Ever.

The final fight of Zelda : Wind Waker in the rain felt pretty awesome. It was also semi-challenging too which is a nice change. Sticking with Zelda... watching the moon make planetfall in Majora's Mask was breathtaking in a very sad way.

Freelancer had a couple of moments that stuck with me... I remember one particular instance where a huge dogfight had turned sour and the only solution was running, managing to break away from pursuing enemy ships on the brink of death and breaking out of hyperspace to a new sector, with a nebula spread out in front of me and some blissful, peaceful pipe music. Pure love.

The canal helicopter chase in Half Life : 2 was pretty awesome, too.

Edit : Forgot mass Howitzer shelling in Company of Heroes.

I haven't played Crysis Wars yet, but in Crysis MP some moments were epic. Fighting while there's nuclear explosions happening nearby = epic.

Also, Total War battles.
Total War battles kick ass. And not two midget armies fighting each other across a bridge, I mean the unit scale turned up to MASSIVE. Three armies fighting for the control of Antioch, one army holed up inside the nearly ruined city, it's walls about to crumble. Suddenly another army of horse archers comes to the rescue, decimating the advancing legionnaires and routing the remaining enemy troops, effectively saving the battered city guard at the last second.

Now that is epic.

Gears 2 looks epic
Hehe, how long did it take you to come up with that one.

I though Okami was really epic. The way you get to spread greenery and flowers over the landscape...

God of war has lot's of epic moments too, as did Mass effect, and that nuke in COD4..

As a matter of fact I think the statement by the OP that epic moments in games are on the downfall is completely wrong. But maybe I'm just easily impressed.
A couple of seconds, if you actually think COD 4 was "epic", yet ome of the shown footage for Gears 2 isn't then theres something wrong.

And GoW 2 is made by EPIC, so its automatically epic...
I didn't say I thought GOW2 isn't going to be epic I was just pointing out the funny pun. Epic game made by Epic...

Well I thought it was funny anyway.

There's not a single second of Shadow Of The Colossus that I've played so far that hasn't been epic.

I really do think that the expectation for games to be 'realistic' is taking away the epic feeling I used to get. It's a little sad actually...

I think LittleBigPlanet will deliver awesomness and epicness to all. And I jest you not, for who wouldnt feel great after skating four ragdolls in a long drop.
Resistance 2 might be epic too!
