The major problem I see with this movie is that, beyond my other critiques, seeing it in a theater makes it much much less effective. Maybe its because I had an over jumpy black lady behind me screaming or shouting when anything happened (and I mean anything) but for me this kind of movie would work better in your house. It takes place in the house, fucks with you because it removes your sense of safety in your home and when you sleep; so obviously seeing the movie in your house would probably make you a little more frightened.
I also hated the male lead because he was "brave" to the point of inhuman stupidity. He's like that one intro chick in the beginning of any slasher film, who goes and checks out some lost ruins or haunted basement or something; he's too stupid to live. That and the film had some many cliches that I could guess what the ending, middle and beginning would be like before even seeing it (girls are always the haunted ones, the guys are always the antagonizing force for the ghosts, they always find out it's happened before just before shit gets really bad, etc.) This plus the fact that the actual hauntings piss weak till the near end. I know they were trying to add tension but they drug it out so long that the tension they built had time to subside and greatly undermined the ending.
Oh and there were a couple impossible shots, especially early on.
Over all it bored me, and thats disappointing because I love a good thriller or suspense horror. And yeah, every saw since the first one has sucked, and even the first one has it's silliness. But I think we can ALL agree the first one was better then the next ones.
